Would you be disappointed with this as your valentines ‘cheap’ meal? When you ask for steak, asparagus and escalopes and come back with this instead 🙄think the main is horrendous.

@Tropicaliyes I think people are talking about natural growing conditions ( maybe with minor natural enhancements like fertiliser and a cold frame ) . You can grow anything any time of year but the environmental cost is huge compared to seasonal veg. Where’s the biodiversity in a warehouse.

Tropicaliyes · 11/02/2023 21:54

@Arrrrrrragghhh you think? Now knowing how long it takes to grow I actually think the reason they import them at different seasons isnt just because you can only harvest it for 6 weeks in general but also because of the length of time it takes before the first harvest… im guessing it can be harvested at different times of the year in different countries meaning during the seasons it isnt available here it is always available somewhere in the world. The same goes for most fruits and veg however here in the UK we for sure are limited on what we can grow unless you use a grow tent where you can manipulate the “weather conditions”. I might be wrong but i assumed if Asparagus takes 3 years then it must be cold hardy as i see images of it grown outdoors in the ground?

Middleagedspreadisreal · 11/02/2023 22:00

Got ours from Tesco, £12 inc a bottle of prosecco. M&S overpriced.

Ridelikethewind · 11/02/2023 22:21

I would be happy sharing more or less any food with the person I love on Valentine's Day, but I guess we're all different!

fatimashortbread · 11/02/2023 22:31

Asparagus isn’t in season til May. Why would you expect for a Valentine’s meal?

BarbaraofSeville · 11/02/2023 22:50

Just about nothing is in season at this time of year in the UK. I assume that all the people objecting to asparagus are only eating cabbage, onions and frozen and canned veg right now?

Tropicaliyes · 11/02/2023 22:50

@fatimashortbread M&S and Ocado are selling it right now regardless if its in season here or not.. thats why they import things. I guess it was just sold out for the OPs order

Bayleaf25 · 11/02/2023 23:00

No return of OP so hey ho 🤷‍♀️

We go to new optician who says short sightedness can be stopped. Why did the old one just let it get worse. 🤓

Did they not manage to help you out yet? I think you're on the wrong thread Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/02/2023 11:02

Guessing @Dawbie isn't coming back

It's bleedin' M&S, not Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons!

Oooo I wonder what Raymond's doing there for valentines 💝

Maybe not bread chicken and prawn cocktail! 😊

Iwanttobeagranny · 12/02/2023 18:22

They had loads of everything in my local M&S (Silverlink) and the steak looked really good. I suppose you could easily add a bag of veg or salad or use the chicken for a different meal and buy a couple of steaks 🤷🏼‍♀️

I bet he could make it marvellous 🥰

Mozero · 12/02/2023 20:49

Not really sure what you want. Two quality steaks cost anywhere between £12 and £30 each based on the cut. Anything less and we are talking cheap butchers or poor cuts, and then you might as well go to the shops.

Hasselback potatoes, I'll take that any day.

Veal can be hard to come by if you want escalopes.

It's a commercial grab for cash and we are in the middle of some of the worst economic conditions for 100 years.

ExistenceOptional · 12/02/2023 20:59

@Mozero You are paying far too much for steaks.
M&S Steaks are normally under £10 for two.

TheKeatingFive · 12/02/2023 21:16

So I eventually made it in today.

I got the rack of lamb, the cheesy green veg side, the tempura veg fritter starter, the berry pots and the prosecco.

Pretty happy with that.

I had a look at the Sainsbury's meal at the same time and it didn't look as good, so happy to pay the extra fiver. 🤷‍♀️

fyn · 12/02/2023 22:41

@Tropicaliyes farms in the England do grow asparagus out of the traditional season, asparagus was harvested early last year in February after being grown in polytunnels and insulated with coir as it was a mild winter.

kateandme · 12/02/2023 23:29

we need someone to try the iceland valentines meal!

Tropicaliyes · 12/02/2023 23:35

@fyn I dont remember saying we didnt grow Asparagus out of season? Unless i missed something?🤔🧐 I was the one being told it cannot be harvested in February.

Stewball01 · 13/02/2023 01:18

There were veggies. Potatoes. I love potatoes. The chicken didn't look particularly enticing. No to the wine but that's because I don't drink any more. The afters was ok. Still not what you ordered.
