To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

You all need to try the Richmond ones. I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and these are by far the best.

Agree - we've literally just eaten them. They were pretty good! Or at least, they tasted like cheap sausages, which lots of us secretly like. DD literally just said 'how come [DS the vegetarian] had those sausages?' because she htought they were real.

The best thing is that they don't have any shit in them at all. If you're not yet freaking out at the fact that veggie/vegan stuff seems to have huge amounts of thickeners/stabilisers/gums/preservatives, almost all of which kill off the gut bacteria that they now know basically keeps us alive, then you need to listen to Tim Spector...

EmmaEmerald · 29/01/2023 20:22

Thank you for the warning OP
so has Linda Mc changed as well?

I used to be vegetarian but I swear everything going vegan is connected to me finding my way back to meat!

I don't like them. They are too meaty!🤣

Email the company to complain. That’s what I have done. Forcing veganism onto us and not able to freeze us a joke

Forcing veganism on you. 😬

OneFrenchEgg · 29/01/2023 20:30

I hate the Richmond ones (vegan) and I'm gutted about the Cauldron ones as my veggie kids loved them a lot and it was an easy dinner. I eat more roast veg/curry etc and the odd vegan burger if I'm lazy.

lavenderlove · 29/01/2023 20:31

I was so excited to try these as they were my favourite as a veggie (now vegan), but they were so bad! It's the texture more than anything, feels sort of squeaky in your mouth! Not a lot of taste either, so disappointing.

That’s why I like them! I’m a vegetarian for moral reasons, I fully recognise that some animals taste yummy, and pigs are possibly the most delicious of all the animals. I think it’s because they are more oily.

Yeah, I’m the only herbivore in the house and the omnivores all like them here too.

We do veggie jan every year, helps reduce our overall meat consumption and often ends up introducing some new decent veggie meals into our usual repertoire. Anyway, we've just had toad in the hole tonight with the 'This Isn't Pork Sausages'. Hadn't had them before and I was quite impressed with them.
Got them as we've tried their chicken pieces before and DS likes them so much he occasionally has them in his pack up sandwiches outside of veggie Jan.

WineDup · 29/01/2023 20:33

Side note, has anyone tasted the fake prawn sandwich that they sell in Aldi? It’s … terrifyingly realistically textured. Possibly the only thing that has truly skeeved me out.

The This Isn’t range is brilliant. Their bacon and their chicken pieces are really good.

Whatatimetobealivetoday · 29/01/2023 20:36

@biddyboo oh god I thought I was going and had bought the wrong ones, I even said to DP these are usually nice but I think I’ve bought different ones.

New ones are horrid!!!!

Jakbird · 29/01/2023 20:36

We've just had some in our regular Sunday night veggie toad in the hole. They were rank! I used to love them.

Nannyfannybanny · 29/01/2023 20:37

Went veggie over 40 years ago, can't bare veggie sausages. They look and taste like meat. I used to like "Glamorgan sausages, which were just made from leek and potato, Sainsbury's did their own,you can't get them anymore.

Wiki estimates that the UK is 10% vegetarian and 2% vegan. I am sick of retailers and restaurants making everything vegan as a catch-all. I really dislike a lot of vegan products. As a vegetarian I think we have been thrown under the bus for the sake of a tiny proportion of people.

Try being coeliac , lots of restaurants have clumped the vegan menu into the free from menu so there is even less choice for coeliacs than ever before unless you wish to be a vegan coeliac - which we don’t .

CherryPieface · 29/01/2023 20:41

Now I know why I can’t get them out of the packet! Pure mush! Still tasted ok though I thought.

ReneBumsWombats · 29/01/2023 20:44

Last time I had them, I put them on the plate and they were honestly the most disappointing thing I've ever seen. They were small, limp, dry, shrivelled...if I wanted that kind of depression, I'd date a MRA.

Snugglemonkey · 29/01/2023 20:45

I cannot stand this move to making vegetarian food vegan. I was veggie pre DC. I do eat meat and fish occasionally and I feed DC local organic meat. Our meat consumption is actually increasing some weeks, because my few go to veggie convenience goods are being replaced with gross vegan recipes.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 29/01/2023 20:47

I had Goodlife Mighty non Meaty sausages at a cafe in the summer. Not trying to be fake meat and really delicious

Snugglemonkey · 29/01/2023 20:47

Blinkingheckythump · 29/01/2023 16:35

Because veggies can eat vegan food, so by making them vegan they broaden their target audience and thus can sell more of their product (assuming veggies actually like the food still of course)

Do they though? I know lots of people turning away from things they happily ate for years. Such a shame.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/01/2023 20:47

@Floralnomad I feel your pain. !! You are quite correct.

dustyfans · 29/01/2023 20:51

Absolutely fucking disgusting they are. Devvo.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 29/01/2023 20:51

Terrible new recipe. Won't be getting those again.

We had some Plant Kitchen caramelised onion ones this week that were pretty good

Cauldron stopped doing a lentil pate in 2005 and my mum and I still talk about it. Living in hope of finding it back on the shelves one day 😂

I remember this! Used to be one of my fave lunches.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 29/01/2023 20:56

The odd thing about the sudden move to veganise everything is that at the same time there's also a flood of companies adding milk to products that didn't previously contain it.
