To hate the new Cauldron sausages

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

Used to get Cauldron, but now buy the Richmond meat free, the frozen ones loose in a bag are much nicer than the packaged chilled sausages for some reason.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 29/01/2023 16:31

Dann! I had one recently and thought it had been stored incorrectly of something because it just wasn’t right. I hadn’t realised it was a new recipe.

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:31

The Richmond ones are OK, but I don't love them. They seem quite oily and I don't like the aftertaste. They've also got quite a bit less protein than the (old) Cauldron ones. The Cauldon ones were the best. Why did they change them so drastically 😭

The Richmond vegan ones seem to be well liked by lots of people and get great reviews. I’m a vegan but don’t really eat the fake meat stuff, but my kids like them, even the meat eating one. They haven’t tried the Cauldren ones.

holierthanthou73 · 29/01/2023 16:32

I’ve just gone over to the Heck meatfree ones, they were on offer so thought I’d give them a go. Highly recommended!

It’s the oily ones I liked. The only meat I missed after becoming veggie was Richmond pork sausages, so I think the fact that they are made by an actual meat company and are more unhealthy actually makes me like them more. Although I suppose it’s a bit anti-veggie if me to give money to a real sausage company, haha.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 29/01/2023 16:34

The new Cauldron ones are fucking grim. Their twitter feed is full of similarly pissed off people.

I reckon it’s nothing to do with vegan rubbish but rather they’ve removed the eggs because the cost of eggs is skyrocketing and the availability is tricky at the moment.

I still miss the Tesco frozen Lincolnshire sausages. As a life long vegetarian, I really hate the crap vegan trend at the moment, which removes decent vegetarian options and replaces them with over processed fake shite.

I know tons of vegetarians and have never met a vegan in my life. While I’m sure there are plenty out there I’d wager there are infinitely more vegetarians so why this rush to turn everything vegan?

Because veggies can eat vegan food, so by making them vegan they broaden their target audience and thus can sell more of their product (assuming veggies actually like the food still of course)

By that argument every restaurant would only have vegetarian options as meat eaters can just eat the veggie options, no?

AliasGrape · 29/01/2023 16:38

I don’t like the Richmond ones - I never liked Richmond meat ones when I ate meat to be fair.

I used to hate the quorn ones but I had some on a veggie breakfast at a hotel recently and thought they were ok - don’t know if the recipe has changed or I was just really really hungry that morning?!

I don’t like fake meat in general and absolutely agree about the lack of decent bean burger type options. The (old style) sausages were just helpful to have an easy freezer option or something I could have alongside roast dinner type trimmings when DH and DD had meat.

I know a few meat eaters who would happily eat the old cauldron sausages, but no way would they eat the new version.

When you read threads/reviews like this it makes you wonder who they did their product testing on!

Vegans, I bet they tested them on vegans. The trend now is to test and question the demographic they are championing not those who the are running rough shod over.

I agree, inedible.

ReneBumsWombats · 29/01/2023 16:39

Is that why they've turned shit? I knew they had but I didn't know they'd gone from veggie to vegan.

Yeah, they're awful now.

Probably to appeal to the growing numbers of vegans.

My friend likes the Heck ones and the ‘This is not pork’ ones.

VivaVivaa · 29/01/2023 16:41

I agree!! We were so disappointed with them recently. They used to be the best. My vegan friends don’t like them either!

PriamFarrl · 29/01/2023 16:42

Try the Miami Burger sausages. Amazingly good.

Elphame · 29/01/2023 16:42

I've been reading their facebook page. I don't think anyone likes them!

I've got some of the old ones in the freezer but I guess I'm now looking for Richmond or I'll have to dust off the Glamorgan sausages recipe but that's no good if you just want a quick meal.

Yeah im not a big eater of fake meat products either, but sometimes I just fancy a sausage sandwich, and the cauldron ones were by far the best. I think the Richmond ones put me off because they taste a bit like a cheap real meat sausage, whereas the cauldron ones just tasted like a really decent veggie option.

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 29/01/2023 16:48

Agree about the Richmond. I don't like them because they taste too much like real Richmond

PurpleWitch · 29/01/2023 16:48

Yep, they've ruined the best veggie sausage on the market by making it vegan. The texture of the new recipe Cauldron sausages is all squishy and the taste not so good as it used to be. I've stopped buying them.

AmIreallyBeverly · 29/01/2023 16:49

Have they changed Linda McCartney Rosemary sausages too? Sob.

I've not tried the cauldron sausages and won't bother now.

I also don't understand all the fake meat stuff. I guess it's cheaper than proper veg though.

Plitvice · 29/01/2023 16:52

Richmond skins go hard and chewy in the airfryer (or chewy and slimy if undercooked). They definitely tasted too porky for my liking (I gave them a year).

Wiki estimates that the UK is 10% vegetarian and 2% vegan. I am sick of retailers and restaurants making everything vegan as a catch-all. I really dislike a lot of vegan products. As a vegetarian I think we have been thrown under the bus for the sake of a tiny proportion of people.

giraffesaregreat · 29/01/2023 16:54

Totally agree - I've been vegetarian for 35 years and Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages were great and a staple in our household. I can't understand why anyone would have signed off on the new vegan ones as they are just awful.

Would be really interesting to see the impact on Cauldron sales - they will drop off a cliff! We used to buy about 6 packs of Cauldron sausages a month (family of 6), but never again unless they reinstate the old recipe.

Vegetarian food is being destroyed by the move to vegan products (and no, Richmond vegetarian sausages are not nice - they are too similar to the meat version).

JennyForeigner · 29/01/2023 16:56

Bought some this week. YANBU, horrible.

I've had them probably once a week since I was a teenager and a Saturday morning cauldron sausage sandwich was my happy place 😔😔😠
