To hate the new Cauldron sausages

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

Oh wow, it’s not just me and DH then! We had the new cauldron sausages last week and they went in the bin, absolutely gross. We’ve been enjoying the old recipe ones for years and we’re really disappointed with the new version.

TrollMunter · 29/01/2023 17:03

Yes you need the Richmond ones. We fight over them in my house!

Greybeardy · 29/01/2023 17:07

Yup, they’re gross!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/01/2023 17:07

Oh I'm so disappointed to hear this. I'm not a vegan and I don't want my longstanding vegetarian foods tampered with!

CountTheTimes · 29/01/2023 17:10

Cauldron is now a fully vegan brand.

Cauldron is now a fully vegan brand.

I was hoping that given the level of utter disdain for the new version that they might bring the old version back, but if they want to market themselves as being a totally vegan brand I guess that won't happen 🙁

Is it too much to hope another manufacturer will exploit the gap in the market and make some like the old ones?!

Crikeyalmighty · 29/01/2023 17:17

I love really good vegetarian food (and I'm not veggie) but it's harder and harder to get without making from scratch. So
Much vegan stuff out there and every processed vegan product I've tried apart from an odd bit of cake has been utterly rank!

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 29/01/2023 16:39

Vegans, I bet they tested them on vegans. The trend now is to test and question the demographic they are championing not those who the are running rough shod over.

I agree, inedible.

Surely vegans have taste though. If these are as grim as they sound it's difficult to imagine how anyone could like them.

EmmaDilemma5 · 29/01/2023 17:17

They used to be my favourite too, I've not tried the new version.

Have you tried Richmond vegan sausages? They're lovely!

FunkyMonks · 29/01/2023 17:23

Richmond veggie ones are the best I find they are tasty and aren't plastic tasting at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2023 17:25

I know a few meat eaters who would happily eat the old cauldron sausages, but no way would they eat the new version.

We aren't veggie but the of CF sausages were a good cook from frozen option (never fancy trying that with a meat soss.). DH took a pack out of the freezer last week, realised it now said they shouldn't be frozen and binned them... I thought he was being fussy but sounds like we had a lucky escape.

ScarlettSunset · 29/01/2023 17:40

Totally agree.
I don't like a lot of the fake meat products but I did like the cauldron Lincolnshire sausages (though I liked the Tesco version first and was gutted when they stopped making them and switched to cauldron as the nearest substitute).
I don't mind all the vegan food on offer but only if it's good vegan food. I used to be able to get nice vegetarian meals when eating out (and some were vegan anyway), but now it's all just vegan fake meat burgers everywhere.

Cnidarian · 29/01/2023 17:49

Gutted, these were the absolute best. The Richmond ones are rank, too salty, flaccid, no flavour.

Ihavedogs · 29/01/2023 18:00

WineDup · 29/01/2023 16:26

You all need to try the Richmond ones. I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and these are by far the best.

I personally think they are revolting and look awful to boot. But I never liked the texture and taste of meat.

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 18:03

Found this comparison on their Facebook page. The new ones have more salt, more sugar, a lot less protein and more filler ingredients (the first listed ingredients is now water). Gross

I don't like the texture of the Richmond ones. They seem disturbingly meaty.

They are a grim as all fake vegan food. It is impossible to make fake meat tasty and vegan.

GlassBunion · 29/01/2023 18:14

I've always loved Glamorgan sausages.
I haven't seen them for a few years now.
It's now always fake meat /plant based shite .

I know I could make them but I can't be bothered to.

Vegetarianism has been dumped for veganism, imho.

StupidlyImperfect · 29/01/2023 18:15

Sorry to ambush but too good an opportunity to pass up asking a veggie product question.

Has anybody seen these anywhere? Our Tesco used to do them and stopped ages ago and I can’t find them anywhere now. They are GF and other veggie sausage patties aren’t. TIA

Has anyone tried complaining directly to Cauldron about the new recipe? If they get all these negative feedback directly maybe there's a chance of them reconsidering? (Although moving to a fully vegan range doesn't sound promising I admit.)

StupidlyImperfect · 29/01/2023 18:30

Yes I saw that @holierthanthou73 it does list lots of shops but the particular product I’m after isn’t in any of those stores near me, just the burgers & mince.

Wiki estimates that the UK is 10% vegetarian and 2% vegan. I am sick of retailers and restaurants making everything vegan as a catch-all. I really dislike a lot of vegan products. As a vegetarian I think we have been thrown under the bus for the sake of a tiny proportion of people.

Absolutely. Im not veggie now but was for 15 years. My main source of protein was cheese and eggs and Im very keen on dairy products.

Lots of veggies are,, plus cream etc.

I think retailers will realise that their products are not very popular with either meat eaters or veggies and go back to what they were doing previously.
