To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

The odd thing about the sudden move to veganise everything is that at the same time there's also a flood of companies adding milk to products that didn't previously contain it.

do you have any examples please? Must be a nightmare for people with allergies.

CatAssTrophic · 29/01/2023 21:00

That is shit, they were the only ones I could eat. I found that most of the others were full of weird tasting gunge. Cauldron changed something a while back which put me off them anyway, I think it was a spice and I reduced the amount I bought.

Beyond Sausage is also foul. The Richmond ones, I think, have a less healthy ingredient list, sugar or carbs (?) which I have to avoid, and they smell horrible when cooking. If they make me heave then, i have no hope of eating them.

I miss The Beet Goes On sausages, not seen those for a long time. They were the best of all, and the burgers from the same company.

I don't understand why all the vegetarian food has to be vegan, and contain so much horrible stuff. Vegan food is always disguised with so many added flavours and crud that it takes the skin off my mouth. Especially the fake shredded meat stuff. Horrible muck.

DemBonesDemBones · 29/01/2023 21:01

Every time a veggie food becomes vegan it's ruined. Quorn ham is the worst now. Slimy grimness.

The one I discovered this week was Pringles. All except the plain now have whey powder.

I have dairy allergy, so am not pleased by the change.

Yes, a friend has two DC with dairy allergy. We were chatting about food changes yesterday but I'd no clue about milk powder being added to stuff so will forewarn her if it's a thing.

I know that bournville buttons changed to have milk in them a year or so ago. And pringles apparently.

TeamHerbivore · 29/01/2023 21:12

Cross post about pringles.

Moorlander · 29/01/2023 21:14

I too love the Richmond ones precisely because they are like the cheap meat ones! However my new favourite is the This is Not Pork, really oily and delicious, mmm. Shame about the Cauldron though, they were lovely too. I'm grateful that I have been reminded of Glamorgan sausages, haven't made them for ages and they are so delicious.

Cauldron stopped doing a lentil pate in 2005 and my mum and I still talk about it. Living in hope of finding it back on the shelves one day 😂

I miss the Cauldron mushrooms burgers from a similar era. All their newer burgers are shite. Those were lush (I'm not a veggie just prefer a good veggie burger and sausage to the meat versions). Luckily for sausages I do like the Quorn Best of British ones.

Plitvice · 29/01/2023 21:26

Quorn Best of British work out quite expensive if you eat them regularly. The cheaper Quorn ones have dodgy ingredients. There is almost too much choice out there now and most is unhealthy, over processed vegan stuff. I'd love a recipe for homemade sausages which can be frozen.

SeahorseBlue · 29/01/2023 21:28

I agree that vegetarian items are disappearing in favour of vegan. I've noticed it in restaurants too, no nice vegetarian options, only vegan stuff like vegan burgers with no cheese or coleslaw. It's really annoying!

Plitvice · 29/01/2023 21:31

I was actually told that I would have to pay £3 extra to swap out vegan mozzarella on a pizza for regular mozzarella which was on every other pizza on the menu!

beanfeast · 29/01/2023 21:31

I'm a vegan, but agree with you.
Going out previously for meals was hit and miss, but vegan food was starting to get interesting and there were always veggie options. Now though, everywhere serves Beyond burgers which I have no interest in. They also stick vegan and gluten free together.
It's just lazy.
I agree that sosmix was amazing, but can't get it easily anymore sadly.

hels71 · 29/01/2023 21:34

I'm so glad it's not just me. They were the only veggie sausages both DH and I liked. Struggling to find a replacement!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2023 21:38

ReneBumsWombats · 29/01/2023 20:44

Last time I had them, I put them on the plate and they were honestly the most disappointing thing I've ever seen. They were small, limp, dry, shrivelled...if I wanted that kind of depression, I'd date a MRA.

I'm really glad now that DH binned the pack we had.Grin

peaceandpotato · 29/01/2023 21:39

It's great news for vegans I guess.

fiorentina · 29/01/2023 22:05

They are revolting. Bad of them to pretend it’s a slight change in recipe when they are a drastic change and are now a slimy, awful product. So many negative reviews. Did they do no customer research?!

Yeah, you missed nothing.

I didn't realise they'd changed the recipe. I thought I'd just overcooked them, which was weird because my technique hadn't changed. I tried frying them, which I don't like doing, but they were still dry, shrivelled, limp...just now they were oily as well.

I stopped buying them a while ago. It's good to know I wasn't going mad.

I imagine most vegans would prefer nice food though

@29052022J have you tried this one? Your post reminded me so I googled and this came up. Might give it a go.

timtam23 · 29/01/2023 22:22

Cauldron sausages used to be lovely. As did the Cauldron pâtés and the Cauldron mushroom burgers. I really dislike all of the "plant based" fake meat stuff, I've been veggie since the early 1980s so I've had more than my share of salads, omelettes and chips as unimaginative main meals. Things seem to be getting worse again, not better, for vegetarian food. I didn't realise Sosmix was still available, my mum used to use that. Morrison's do still sell bean burgers and Lidl/Aldi do some beetroot or sweet potato burgers which are ok, but most of the supermarket burger/sausage offerings are now horrid fake meat rubbish. LMcC used to be much nicer as well. I think I'll have to start making my own Glamorgan sausages.

Phrenologistsfinger · 29/01/2023 22:24

Ooh, are they vegan now? Excellent! I shall buy a pack and give them a go 😀

Yes it seems now everything is ‘meat-style’ although there has always been Quorn I have never been a fan of anything that is meat-like. Also frustrating that now many vegetarian/vegan burgers have been replaced on menus with the meat-like alternatives. Unfortunately in the past I have been served meat by accident in a restaurant and now don’t even want to try the alternative as it’s to stressful to enjoy. I’ve even had my husband taste some because I’m not sure if they’re meat and he’s surprised with how realistic they are.

2023username02 · 29/01/2023 22:25

@Spanielsarepainless , was going to say the same.

I was wondering if I had bought a different variety by mistake, but no, they have changed them so much I won’t be buying them anymore.

I have tried this one, although it is nice it’s just not quite the same 😩 I’ve even tried making my own but to no avail. Probably was the tasty preservatives that Cauldron were using 😂
