To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

Glamorgan sausages are the best veggie sausages. Most supermarkets have them in the freezer cabinet. They are made with cheese and leeks.

Sainsbury used to sell those but haven't done for a few years. I haven't seen Glamorgan sausages in any other supermarkets?

RomeoMcFlourish · 15/04/2024 09:28

I used to love the Sainsbury’s Glamorgan sausages, but haven’t seen them in any supermarket for a long time.

Time to resurrect this thread…because they’ve ruined them again! Their ‘new look’ packaging is a sneaky attempt at hiding that they’ve also changed the recipe and put disgusting skins on them.

No! I just bought two packs (with the designed-for-5-year-olds packaging). Why did they not learn last time? I was very happy when they went back to the old tried and tested recipe.

I admit, I haven't tried them yet. I will be back with a more learned opinion (although I'm not going to have a quick fry-up right now to check).

timtam23 · 15/04/2024 12:06

Oh no I bought a couple of the new packs last week (agree about the packaging aimed at toddlers) cooked 2 sausages last night and thought they were a bit weird-looking but maybe I had left them in the oven too long. But yes they definitely were quite wrinkly which would have been from the new skins, and were a bit rubbery...what a shame. They were my favourite veggie sausages. Worth trying again to get Cauldron to revert to the original recipe?

timtam23 · 15/04/2024 12:14

I have emailed Cauldron. I don't really do Twitter/ Facebook so we shall see if they respond to emails.

timtam23 · 15/04/2024 12:37

Very quick reply from.Cauldron! Not a positive one though 🙁

"Thank you for contacting Cauldron.

We’re sorry to hear that our new sausages aren’t to your taste.

The new sausages have been developed based directly on consumer feedback. ‘Crispier sausages’ is one of our most popular requests, so that’s exactly what we’ve created!

Our new sausages include a delicious new crispy outer skin and pack even more of a punch when it comes to protein levels, which we know our shoppers are also looking for. We have kept the base of the spice and herb mix to maintain the same delicious flavour.

Taste always comes first when it comes to Cauldron. While we continue to experiment in the kitchen, we haven’t yet found a vegan sausage recipe that delivers the amazing flavour that shoppers know and love from the veggie recipe.

Many thanks for taking the time to contact us with your feedback. We will pass this on to our product development team.

With very best wishes

O dear not a good response. Looks like they've made a business error - again! I'm sure a lot of people went back to them after the first time but I'm not so sure they will a second time. They're going to lose custom over this. I'll have to treasure the six I have in my freezer, a limited resource.

RomeoMcFlourish · 15/04/2024 13:52

They’ve definitely lost our custom. I think what fucks me off more than anything is that after the last debacle, this time they’ve tried to be sneaky fuckers, making it look like it’s just the packaging that’s changed. ‘New look’, when you’ve changed the packaging, does not make it clear that you’ve also changed the recipe. For an inferior product. Again.

Absolute twats.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 15/04/2024 16:57

Oh FFS. They are just desperate to make a vegan sausage, aren’t they, presumably so they can replace eggs with a cheaper ingredient.

I have never, ever heard anyone say they want more skin on a sausage. Stupid bloody idiots.

shyalice · 15/04/2024 18:14

The new ones aren’t vegan though. They still have egg in them.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 15/04/2024 18:25

Yes, but the email quoted here from customer services says they are trying to make a vegan sausage

Crowsruletheworld · 15/04/2024 18:34

If you go on their instagram page, all the vegans are complaining! Because they have one vegetarian item.
If I had a Time Machine I’d send all the moaning vegans back to the early 80’s. To enjoy the delights, that’s how long I’ve been vegetarian.
I will stick with my UPF Linda McCartney sausages.

Elphame · 15/04/2024 19:32

Thanks for the warning.

I was planning to buy some this afternoon with the monthly shop but after reading this I decided to pass.

Bad move Cauldron

Realistically what would be the problem with making a vegan sausage? If they could keep their standard veggie ones then I don’t think it would be a problem for them to bring it out a vegan one in addition.

But that isn't good enough for the vegans. Vegetarians don't care if there are also vegan sausages. They just want Vegetarian as well.

DuchessOfSausage · 15/04/2024 20:56

@shyalice , there seems to be a move to plant-based food, and some vegans object to companies using dairy products and eggs.

I picked up some Cauldron sausages with a yellow sticker and was put off by the packaging, and the sausages looked different.

The old packaging was attractive but the new ones looked like many of the vegan stuff - unappealing.

I think I'll try emailing them too. Poor 'Sarah' - it isn't personal (unless she decided to change the sausages again!).

Biscuitsneeded · 16/04/2024 20:44

I emailed too and got an identical response to the above. I replied 'but they're not crispier, just tough and rubbery, and we don't care about the protein content because we're vegetarian and not vegan so we can get our protein from many sources'. "Sarah" did then concede that if there was a large volume of negative feedback they might look at it again... so do all email!

RomeoMcFlourish · 17/04/2024 09:58

I have emailed this morning.
