To hate the new Cauldron sausages

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

I still miss the Tesco frozen Lincolnshire sausages
DD would agree. She's yet to find a currently made brand she likes. The vegetarian butcher 'little willies' were briefly favourites despite the terrible name. Discontinued.
Vegan ones just seem to have unpleasant bitter aftertaste or sticky texture.

soulfuleyes · 29/01/2023 18:56

I've complained (twice.) They say the number one request of 2021 was to make their sausages vegan. I can't believe that just because you remove the egg white this is the best they can come up with, they now taste like all the other revolting vegan sausages.

Yes I saw that @holierthanthou73 it does list lots of shops but the particular product I’m after isn’t in any of those stores near me, just the burgers & mince.

I wonder if they have discontinued the product

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 29/01/2023 19:15

I complained and got some rubbish reply saying they were sorry I was disappointed but tough titties basically.

I find it hard to believe they had a vast number of requests to make their sausages vegan. They’ve certainly alienated a huge number of existing customers!

I think Cauldron are owned by the same people Quorn are (or at least, they have the same address). They should be forced to open source the recipe if they aren’t going to make them!

Mykittensmittens · 29/01/2023 19:16

Please don’t tell me they’ve buggered up the LM ones? They were the only ones which we liked in either a sausages sandwich or a toad in the hole. The original ones not the rosemary ones. I’ve been eating freezer stock so hadn’t realised.

my only other suggestion would be old fashioned ‘sausmix’ if you can get it anywhere but it’s a complete faff. A dried mix that you fashioned into a sausage shape (no plastic case) and fried in a pan which is probably why they tasted so nice!

Mykittensmittens · 29/01/2023 19:17

Sosmix exists!!

Cauldron stopped doing a lentil pate in 2005 and my mum and I still talk about it. Living in hope of finding it back on the shelves one day 😂

I think LM sausages have been vegan for about 4 years.

Villagetoraiseachild · 29/01/2023 19:34

Disappointing news, but thanks for the headsup. Cauldron were the best.

As Ive been a Lidling of late I have been using their Vemondo sausages. They are vegan but I like them. Also like the Gosh brand cocktail sausages. The Vemondo sausages are better fried, but can be grilled. Both ok to freeze.

Can't agree more with you OP. In my house a pack disappears within 24 hours (4 vegetarians) and the last time I bought it (didn't notice the vegan thing) they looked awful and tasted worse - no one wanted to eat it. Still sitting in my fridge with no takers. Plus lower in protein! Makes no sense at all. Richmond ones don't taste as good and are not great for protein. Looks like the good days of veggie sausages are over Shock

Asda used to sell it in dried packs own brand but we don't shop there any more. Not sure now. I. Used to mix it with stuffing, wholegrain mustard, fried onions and make amazing sausage rolls

CountTheTimes · 29/01/2023 19:38

Maybe longer than that.

Villagetoraiseachild · 29/01/2023 19:39

Does anyone have any home made recipes?
Might be worth the effort in these lean sausage times.....

Villagetoraiseachild · 29/01/2023 19:41

I have really gone off all the LM sausages, which is sad as their packaging was nicely non plastic.

Tinkerbyebye · 29/01/2023 19:43

Email the company to complain. That’s what I have done. Forcing veganism onto us and not able to freeze us a joke

TenThousandSpoons · 29/01/2023 19:48

Oh no, these were my favourite too 🥹

HallieHufflepuff · 29/01/2023 19:49

@biddyboo Not had cauldron for a long time so can't comment on that but I would recommend Richmond meat free sausages 🙂

How are they forcing veganism on you? You don’t have to buy them. 😂

Bigminnie1 · 29/01/2023 19:55

I was wondering why they were so disgusting! I had to bin them. The Cumberland ones are still ok.

aramox1 · 29/01/2023 20:06

Yes they are sad and foul. I used to like goodlife veggie sausages but they are gone. Totally agree - anything vegan /'plantbased' in the ready food line seems utterly rank. Loathe and distrust quorn too.

aramox1 · 29/01/2023 20:07

And Wicken Fen! Where are they? Tasty real food!

ShoobeeDooLangLang · 29/01/2023 20:09

I wish so many vegetarian sausages didn’t contain wheat.

I used to like the M&S bangers, but my branch hasn’t had them since before Christmas. Ocado does, so they can’t be discontinued unless Ocado is using up their old frozen stock.

Biscuitsneeded · 29/01/2023 20:13

Completely agree. My DS is veggie and fussy, and he loved them - can't stand the new kind. I am a veggie because I don't like meat so I don't like fake meat either, but even I liked the old Cauldron sausages. And YES why have we lost all the nice veggie options in shops and restaurants to processed shit and fake cheese? I don't want to eat that!

MaryBoggintonTrotterSmyke · 29/01/2023 20:18

Oh no - properly devastated about this, I've loved these for years and wondered why I haven't been able to find them recently. They're also the only ones non-veggie dh will deign to eat. Stupid vegans ruining everything.

Pleiades2020 · 29/01/2023 20:20

Vegan food isn't necessarily worse - I prefer the Hellmann's Vegan Mayo to their normal stuff. But sounds like Cauldron have shot themselves in the foot! I stopped eating them a few years ago, found the sausages too fatty, but definitely won't buy any now. I really don't like this trend of fake meat though. If I eat out I don't want fake meat, I want a decent meal. It tastes artificial and can't be good for you being so processed. I guess they're not only catering to the vegan diet but also to meat eaters trying to eat more vegan meals, maybe that's a bigger market? Hard to find decent meals out these days. Though to be fair it was never really easy.
