To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

Richmond veggie ones are the best I find they are tasty and aren't plastic tasting at all.

@FunkyMonks is it the frozen or fresh ones you speak of?

I’m grateful for the expansion in vegan gluten free food!

Good for you! Why do you need to deny others what they like?!? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not a vegetarian but do quite like a decent veggie sausage. Loved teh Cauldron ones and sad to hear they have been vegan-ised.

What was in the old recipe which made them non-vegan? I do feel sorry for all the vegetarians who are being forced to forgo their cheese/eggs/honey so that restaurants and producers can make a single product to keep the vegans happy too.

And make food tasteless!

I think you should take notice of your user name and CTFO. 😬

Just come online to look up 'Have Cauldron changed their sausage recipe' after we did some for tea tonight. I wondered why each sausage was in its own little groove. DS asked 'are these our ususal (ie. Cauldron) sausages?' and we both agreed they were thinner, chewy, hard, dry and not up to standard. Found this thread which confirms our suspicions! And not freezable!! Always kept a packet or 2 in freezer. So disappointed. Will not be purchasing again. No other veggie sausage came close.

That’s fine but it shouldn’t be at the expense of other GF options .

Crikeyalmighty · 01/02/2023 20:28

@Floralnomad I'm with you- I've got gluten issues but I'm not vegan or even veggie. Just had a very nice chicken shawarma in Bills though with garlic flatbread, hummus and salad - Bills have a really good separate gluten free menu complete with proper burgers and chicken but veggie stuff too . (I don't work for them)

Grapewrath · 01/02/2023 20:35

I’m vegan, was veggie. I found the cauldron ones rank before I turned vegan but haven’t tried the new ones. I don’t rate cauldron on the whole though
I don’t eat much fake meat tbh but the green cuisine ones are ok

mrsrobin · 01/02/2023 21:07

What a disaster! They are the only sausages I like! And to not be freezable - how inconvenient - I often eat half and freeze half. I might email them now to complain!

Do it!!! 👍👍👍

They have been ignoring my messages to them on social media. Perhaps we should all bombard them?

They've asked me on Twitter to DM

OneFrenchEgg · 02/02/2023 11:06

I've had an email reply; looks like it's part of a commitment to reduce the impact on environment and animals and they are 'sorry I don't believe the taste is as good.'

What a rubbish reply. They don't taste as good because they've halved the amount of TVP/protein, increased the water content and completely altered the texture. They can keep trotting out the line about the environment, but if the end result is a rubbish product no one will buy it.

Thanks for drawing my attention to the recipe change. I prefer Quorn sausages, but I expect they've changed too.

ReneBumsWombats · 02/02/2023 15:26

I guess the increased water is why they're so dry and shrivelled now. A greater proportion of ingredients to escape with cooking, and a lower proportion of protein and fat.

Even their marinaded tofu seems off lately too. Have they changed that as well?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/02/2023 15:29

I assume they had some sort of tasting panel for the new recipe, but I wonder whether they were just presented with the cooked version.

A significant part of my complaint about the new recipe is the difficulty of handling them before/during cooking. They are like a soft pate when raw, and impossible to get out of the packet without losing bits.

ReneBumsWombats · 02/02/2023 15:35

Ok...this looks a bit of a faff but I never expected sausages from scratch to be super simple. I think I'll give these a try....

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 02/02/2023 15:41

I doubt they asked fans of the old sausages to taste test the new ones. They probably advertised for vegans to try new vegan stuff, so it wouldn't have been an A/B comparison.

All that cling film!

Try looking for Glamorgan sausage recipes. Much less faff but not vegan as they are cheese based.

ReneBumsWombats · 02/02/2023 15:53

Every veggie sausage recipe requires something to wrap around them to make the shape. Some others call for baking parchment or foil, which might be more eco-friendly, although you couldn't then use your microwave steamer.

I feel a little kitchen experimentation coming on.

They told me on Twitter they had a panel and I did wonder if it was existing users or just random vegans

OneFrenchEgg · 02/02/2023 15:59

I feel like they've jumped on the vegan bandwagon and will slowly lose net customers until they stop being viable.

ReneBumsWombats · 02/02/2023 16:15

Ooh yes, Glamorgan sausages do look good, and apparently no need for any kind of wrap. Only problem is, my youngest recoils at any visible solid vegetable (I make a lot of smooth curries, soups, sauces etc...). But this Glamorgan recipe lets you whizz everything in the blender so it's all smooth. This could work...

I’ve been angry with Cauldron since they stopped making their Moroccan pate. I’ve not bought their sausages in a while but will know to steer clear now.
So fed up with all the weird meat substitutes and vegan ‘cheese’ when eating out. I want actual vegetables!
I was on a very long journey and stopped at a Burger King for the first time in a couple of years and was devastated to find they no longer do their spicy bean burgers. I’ve been eating those since they launched them when I was young
and newly veggie. Best part of 40 years I reckon. 😢
