To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

They are awful, but the vegan bashing on this thread is a bit unnecessary. Meat eaters could turn around and say why add anything veggie to menus as they are also a minority by some of this logic. I don't think vegans seem to like this product either, so direct your discontent to the company.

I hadn't noticed much 'vegan bashing'. What's being bashed is manufacturers, restauranteurs etc lazily changing ok veggie foods to nasty vegan ones. If they're adding decent vegan options that's great.

Wiki estimates that the UK is 10% vegetarian and 2% vegan. I am sick of retailers and restaurants making everything vegan as a catch-all. I really dislike a lot of vegan products. As a vegetarian I think we have been thrown under the bus for the sake of a tiny proportion of people.

It isn't just making vegan the new catch all for vegetarians - all to often in restaurants "the " vegetarian option is also the vegan, nut free, gluten free, soy free, lactose free, flavour free option.

I've never been a great buyer of fake meat but I used to buy some vegetarian sausages/bean burger type products. These seem to have been dumped in favour of highly processed vegan fake meat which as the label above shows is all branding and piss poor quality.

As a lifelong vegetarian who just happens to eat mostly vegan I don't see this is vegan bashing but complaining about lousy quality and overpriced food which is using vegan as a branding opportunity.

I used to by some ready made vegetarian and vegan products - now I rarely do because its all highly processed 'fake' food instead of celebrating good ingredients which just happen to be vegan or vegetarian

Crikeyalmighty · 30/01/2023 13:14

@C8H10N4O2 I totally agree- most processed vegan stuff is totally rank- I would rather have a plate of salad and some homemade falafel or something like that or a homemade veg curry and rice and im not vegan or even veggie but do like good veggie food

Terryscombover · 30/01/2023 14:54

It is just typical of retailers catering for new trends without adding capacity in manufacturing or shelves. Our local supermarkets suddenly lost a tonne of GF foods as it's a "lifestyle choice" that's overtaken by veganism apparently. I'm not sure coeliac is a life style choice Hmm my daughter is vegetarian but dairy/soya and gluten allergic. Beyond Meat is hideous but I have to batch cook with it. It's pea protein based so I am grateful it's not just me who despises it. Thank you for whomever confirmed it is like cooking farts. Envy

soulfuleyes · 30/01/2023 15:15

Obviously they have been inundated with complaints as I've had an email saying they are now looking into making vegetarian and vegan versions, so hopefully...

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/01/2023 15:18

Whilst I generally like the increase in vegetarian foods available (for someone with deep suspicion of most meat and a horror of anything bouncy, gristley, boney etc... its generally good)...

I am getting proper pissed off with EVERYTHING being made vegan, at the expense of vegetarian options. Restaurants are getting in on this too, and whilst lots of vegan foods are lovely, and lots of substitutes undoubtedly taste very good IF you don't eat anything non-vegan, for the rest of us... we CAN tell, they DO have nasty aftertastes or unpleasant textures... just fucking stop it.

And then some things which seem logical - for example, i welcome vegan/veggie options at McDonalds... however I only want a meat free burger, I do NOT want fucking fake cheese and fake mayo... can I ask for my burger to have real cheese and mayo, no, no I fucking can't because PEOPLE are such fucking twats, McDonalds dare not offer that option lest someone sue them!

TedLassosGoldfish · 30/01/2023 15:23

I'm so pissed off with Cauldron for doing this to our favourite sausages Angry

I would have loaded my freezer with the vegetarian ones had I known.

I've just signed a petition online to get them to bring back the veggie sausages. I've tried to do a link to it but for some reason it's not working. A quick google should bring it up

CatAssTrophic · 30/01/2023 15:33

Well, if everyone stops buying them it won't be good for Cauldron.
Someone mentioned them being the same company as Quorn, they have been for a few years now, I had a complaint about something being changed and contacted them which is how I found out.

Cauldron was far superior in terms of decent products, and went downhill when it combined with Quorn which seems to me to be absolute crap and since they messed with that as well it has potential to give me gut wrenching digestive problems so I will be steering clear of it.

I don't understand why all the non meat sausages seem to smell like something evil has died in them, some kind of spice or something, and they all taste the same to me, absolutely foul. Give me the old tough ones any day, rather than the mush crud they sell now.

Description of new style vegan sausages, 'worse going in than coming out'.

Quorn have increasingly become a fake processed meat company rather than the original model which was a low fat, decent mycoprotein product which made some reasonable convenient uses in its own right plus a few ready made products such as pies/fillets and sausages.

Now instead it has become a large range of heavily processed fake deli meats and nugget type substitutes, most of which seem lower quality than they used to be.

AliasGrape · 30/01/2023 18:27

For those of us who still want convenience food but not the nasty fake meat stuff the Aldi veggie burgers are quite nice - it’s no help on the sausage front.

Theres a sweet potato and a beetroot version and the ingredients list is all recognisable food (I think some people have issues with rapeseed oil but I’m not fussed) groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-plant-menu-veggie-burgers-sweet-potato-230g/4088600015804

Apparently there are sausages in the range too though I’ve never seen them in my local store - groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-plant-menu-veggie-sausages-270g/4088600340029

ComeOnJohn · 30/01/2023 18:30

@AliasGrape those sweet potato burgers are delicious. They taste like onion bahji’s but aren’t anywhere near calorific. They are also gluten free!

biddyboo · 30/01/2023 18:37

I made these beetroot and black bean burgers yesterday

www.iguanas.co.uk/veggie-burger-recipe

It is my favourite burger recipe, and it's super easy (just a bit messy grating the beetroot)

And it's vegan 😉

I’ve got two packets in the fridge! I don’t think I’ve tried these before - I’ve had the beetroot ones and they were lovely with some goats cheese!

I hope they continue to be all vegan. They can find a better recipe or stop making them if people don’t like them

Why? Why should everyone else be beholden to a minorities wants?

Chaotica · 30/01/2023 20:35

I really hope Cauldron restart the production of the veggie version. We tried the vegan version yesterday and are yet another family who think that they're rank. We won't be buying them again. A good vegan recipe would have been fine, but not this one...

Beholden? No one is making you buy anything vegan.

I'm pretty sure most people would be happy with them being vegan as long as they tasted good.

Melbatls · 30/01/2023 21:05

I went in Waitrose yesterday to pick some up for my DD - but although they were in the fridge section the Cauldron sausages seemed to be half frozen. So I didn’t buy them as I wanted to be able to freeze them. Maybe this is why you can’t freeze them as they have shady been frozen???

Seems it was a lucky decision 😜
