To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

I went in Waitrose yesterday to pick some up for my DD - but although they were in the fridge section the Cauldron sausages seemed to be half frozen. So I didn’t buy them as I wanted to be able to freeze them. Maybe this is why you can’t freeze them as they have shady been frozen???

Seems it was a lucky decision 😜

Yes they are previously frozen. Probably the only way they can pack and despatch them without them being mushed completely out of shape. Let them defrost on arrival.

Tinkerbyebye · 30/01/2023 21:47

I emailed them, really unhappy, especially after it says you can’t freeze them

response is

We do not recommend some of our products are frozen at home, as we know this can impact the overall taste and quality of the product. However, there is no food safety risk to eating a product you have frozen at home, even where it states not suitable for home freezing on the pack. Please defrost the product in the fridge for 24 hours before enjoying, and always make sure to always cook the product until it is piping hot where cooking is recommended.

I won’t be buying them until they go back to the original receipt, which I preferred to meat ones. So back to meat

I'm pretty sure most people would be happy with them being vegan as long as they tasted good.

If animals have to be exploited to make them, then vegans are hardly going to be ok with that. There’s plenty of other food to eat.

I wonder if that was the same branch where I bought blocks of tofu and discovered they were frozen solid. Packaging clearly says Do Not Freeze.

It was in Surrey, there used to be a Library next to it which has recently been demolished...

As a lifelong veggie I bloody hate vegan food, other than the accidentally vegan stuff like Thai or Indian.

The fake meat craze is just awful. It's a lot harder to eat out as a veggie now than it was a decade ago.

Abraxan · 30/01/2023 22:20

Definitelynotem · 30/01/2023 12:15

They are awful, but the vegan bashing on this thread is a bit unnecessary. Meat eaters could turn around and say why add anything veggie to menus as they are also a minority by some of this logic. I don't think vegans seem to like this product either, so direct your discontent to the company.

That isn't the same at all. Which products have been replaced totally with a non meat version, and the meat version no longer exist? I'd imagine that it's a very rare occurrence.

It's not the adding to menus and products people have an issue with.

It's the changing a product, rarely for the better for those who were originally eating them, entirely.

No one would have an issue if they brought out a vegan option, alongside the existing vegetarian version.

I have no issue with people being vegan. Their choice.

I have an issue with restaurants, airlines, food manufacturers, etc taking vegetarian options away and replacing them with a different product entirely.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. If they could make this product vegan and have it taste as good as it did, then everyone would enjoy it and be happy. The problem most people are reporting is that it now tastes awful. Surely no one wants awful tasting food regardless of how they choose to eat?

If the only way they can make them taste good is by adding animal products, then they should just stop making them. 🌱

Apologies. My mistake. I thought I was talking to rational people on here, not those who feel they should have the right to force the world to be the way they want by taking away choice.

When that choice is to make animals suffer for food, it’s obvious many vegans are not going to be in favour of that. You feel you have the right to ‘force’ animals to suffer, why shouldn’t I feel people should not eat animal products to stop them suffering. It’s not ‘irrational’ to not want animals to suffer.

However, it’s one product by one company, there’s plenty of other food containing animal products for you to eat.

One that would like animal exploitation to end, yes.

FangsForTheMemory · 31/01/2023 08:35

I had a vegan burger in Burger King the other day. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve eaten in years. I used to love their spicy bean burgers! I say this as someone who eats meat but only if it’s good quality.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/01/2023 09:08

RIP Spicy Beanburger 😥.

Gone but not forgotten.

AyeCarrumba · 31/01/2023 09:21

@TeamHerbivore stop pushing your beliefs on other people. You give vegans a bad name. Well that and your manky sausages!

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 31/01/2023 09:26

Not a vegetarian but do quite like a decent veggie sausage. Loved teh Cauldron ones and sad to hear they have been vegan-ised.

What was in the old recipe which made them non-vegan? I do feel sorry for all the vegetarians who are being forced to forgo their cheese/eggs/honey so that restaurants and producers can make a single product to keep the vegans happy too.

TimeToStopLurking · 31/01/2023 12:38

Gutted this change is permanent. It's also the only sausage I used to buy and would pop it into the freezer as a packet is too much to use in one go.

Thought I'd accidentally bought the wrong one but was happy to try the vegan one. It felt slimy and didn't cook so well and the new variety can't be frozen as it's been previously frozen. So disappointing. This thread confirmed it's not just me and they are very different.

Richmond Meat-Free Sausages are superior to any others

Cam22 · 31/01/2023 13:11

This vegan tail wagging the dog nonsense annoys me too. I’m vegetarian and I object not having proper vegetarian choices in some places. Even my local M&S cafeteria offers vegan this and vegan that and Freefrom at the expense of what used to be the selections. Grrrr

OneFrenchEgg · 31/01/2023 18:30

I really feel for vegetarians having eggs and dairy removed from stuff - I was veggie for 24 years and then moved to vegan but all my kids are veggie and stuff like this was part of their staple diet. I would have hated to be forced to eat vegan squash curry before I wanted to when eating out!

Phrenologistsfinger · 31/01/2023 21:15

I’m grateful for the expansion in vegan gluten free food!

Roarsomemore · 31/01/2023 22:19

I miss the spicy bean burger too 😢

Purpleberet · 31/01/2023 23:02

Several of my vegetarian friends have voiced their frustration about veggie food being replaced with vegan. As someone who eats meat and fish, I had never really considered this point until they mentioned it.
I see why restaurants with small menus, particularly those with set menus, rather offer one dish to cater for both. But it’s not fair for people who do eat things like cheese and butter have to miss out and be forced to eat vegan.
I have tried being vegan for periods of time and I really missed cheese, eggs, cream. I’m not saying vegan can’t taste good but I think these things make a huge difference to flavour.

Terryscombover · 01/02/2023 09:49

@Phrenologistsfinger - that's interesting as my daughter would be delighted if it was also GF but most of it isn't.
