Naked children in mixed changing rooms-am I pearl clutching?

Ds is 8 and goes to swimming lessons at a local pool. It's mixed changing. Just lately there's always been children aged around 5 showering naked after their swim. It's an open shower area with no cubicles. So when you walk in they are there in your line of vision. The changing room is full of all ages from babies to the elderly. Ds commented today that he doesn't want to see naked people. Surely it's inappropriate to be showering your dc naked in a mixed setting? Or am I clutching?

Because it contradicts the pants message of what's in your underwear being private and we don't show those bits of our bodies to people. I wouldn't want people seeing my naked dc and they'd be very uncomfortable about it anyway.

Ive been on here years and am a regular poster as MNHQ will confirm.

The small children are not 'showing people' anything, they're having a shower in an appropriate setting to be doing so.

Has your son not been taught that if he doesn't want to see something he can control that by careful direction of his neck, head and eyes?

AutisticLegoLover · 26/01/2023 16:51

Of course he has but you can't avoid seeing them. And no, they aren't showing people but people can see. I'm obviously clutching so fair enough.

Naked small children wouldn’t bother me. Not quite sure why it would bother an 8 year old either.
Naked adults on the other hand…..
If I’m remembering correctly I used to strip my toddlers before showering them after swimming.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/01/2023 16:58

You're Pearl-clutching. Small kids are allowed to be naked in public, especially at the beach, in the pool shower or in very hot weather.

Floralnomad · 26/01/2023 16:59

YABU , children being naked in a changing room is normal , it’s what changing rooms are for . I assume you are making the point about it being a mixed changing room because there may be men in there - presumably changing their children not gawping at your child .

Jesus Christ!!

Have a word with yourself!

Upsidedownagain · 26/01/2023 17:04

It's absolutely fine for very young children to be naked in such a situation. Why is your son so uncomfortable with this?

Also the pants message is to help children understand about possible abuse. It's unlikely a child will be abused in a busy public area like a swimming pool communal shower. (Could happen in a cubicle of course, but your son wont see that.....)

ThisMustBeMyDream · 26/01/2023 17:12

No, I don't think it is appropriate for kids or anyone to be naked in public showers.
Why would they need to be naked? My 2 boys have had swimming lessons for years. I take their rash vests off, wash, do hair, fuck off out of there. Pants stay on. When SD comes, her costume comes off shoulders, wash, do hair, fuck off out of there.
I don't want to see other people's naked kids. And my autistic 10 year old definitely would not and would be very vocal about it which would probably embarras the naked kid.

IDontCareMatthew · 26/01/2023 17:14

Why what would he say?

ThisMustBeMyDream · 26/01/2023 17:16

Additionally, my 7 year old does swimming with school. They used a mixed sex large room to change. DS refuses. He wants privacy. They have to accommodate him elsewhere. He commented that he has seen his classmates naked and he didn't like it. He is happy for me to be naked, and him to be naked in front of me. But that is all.

crazysausagespart2 · 26/01/2023 17:17

Is this a joke? What is wrong with naked children having a shower? You are being beyond precious..

I don't live in the uk anymore, and honestly being naked in any shower setting at any age is no big deal outside of the uk...

maddy68 · 26/01/2023 17:17

Definitely pearl clutching. They're kids!

thirdtimeluckyorwhat · 26/01/2023 17:20

No I work in safeguarding and no child any child of any age should be naked in view of the public it's just not on parents are negligent to allow that

BettyB0Op · 26/01/2023 17:21

Maybe put blinkers on him like a horse? The way things are going we’ll all be sharing changing rooms to avoid upsetting anyone. We’ll just have people changing rooms where anything goes….fun times!!

It's not about being offended by seeing naked children it's about protecting the children everyone replying otherwise are stupid and very naive

BettyB0Op · 26/01/2023 17:24

She’s talking about her 8 year old son, are we talking about protecting children from being looked at by other children?? Are you supposed to grow up never knowing what a naked body looks like in real life???

Geilenk · 26/01/2023 17:25

At our local pool, the changing rooms are single sex, but kids of either gender up to the age of 8 can come in.
I'm female and in the women's showers, you will often see fully naked women alongside young boys. It always seems odd, and I hope the same doesn't happen in the male changing rooms. Are there laws about this?

StubbleAndSqueak · 26/01/2023 17:26

The showers are there to wash the chlorine off, not to shower as you would at home
I do the wash hair and fuck off too @ThisMustBeMyDream

Kitcaterpillar · 26/01/2023 17:28

The UK is so deeply odd about this stuff. It's fine. They're children.

MintJulia · 26/01/2023 17:28

As long as the parents or guardians are present, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a naked preschooler. They aren't bothered, why should you be?

By 8 or 9 dcs are aware enough to cover up.
