Tony’s chocolate

What do you all think of it?

Tried it for the first time today and it tastes of nothing. You can taste the filling (we had a pretzel flavour) but couldn’t taste the chocolate at all. And why is it no in squares?! It’s so difficult to break apart and eat!

aibu? This is chocolate is weird!!

I don’t like the plain one but adore the salted caramel one, is a bit of pain with lack of squares but as it’s so chunky you only need a little for that sweet hit so good for me from health point of view. I could easily polish off a whole family bar of Cadbury’s

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 27/11/2022 18:15

Agree, it's disgusting (and annoying)

superdupernova · 27/11/2022 19:37

I thought it tasted awful. All those calories for something so mediocre! I'd happily eat cadburys, galaxy, Divine, hotel chocolat, green and blacks or Lindt so I know it's not just me being fussy.

Dolleey · 27/11/2022 19:56

@ImperioMarch - what’s the Papua New Guinea one?

It’s easier to take it slow with darker chocolate. I last bought a Femmes de Virunga bar along with some other craft chocolate a couple of months ago. I still have a bit of Taza and some Luisa Abram chocolate (dark one with cupuacu pieces - recommended) in my cupboard. Lovely, but I can restrain myself. The Femmes bar otoh is a very distant memory.

ImperioMarch · 27/11/2022 20:09

@Dolleey I mean chocolate made with beans grown in Palau New Guinea.

Elsewhere cocoa beans are dried in the sun but PNG's climate is too wet apparently so they dry them over fires. Means the chocolate made from them has a Smokey taste.

I don't want to be forced to gobble up somebody else's politics every time I eat a bar of chocolate.

I am also partial to British owned businesses whose profits remain in the UK

So it's a no the lonely guys from me, I'm afraid

What's your chocolate of choice? I assume taste isn't top priority on your list?

Waitrose and M&S own bars are delicious

londonrach · 29/11/2022 17:52

The worse so called chocolate you ever taste. Yuk never again. Binned it. Goggle it re it's so called ethics as it's not as squeaky clean as I says it is .. I'm sticking with chocolate that tastes nice

Yes, I like Chocolonely, I think it tastes nice. I was wondering if @thehorsehasnowbolted had any recommendations but having seen them I'm sticking with it, I'm afraid.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2022 17:55

Although the M&S giant mint buttons aren't toooo bad.

TBH, the best chocolate I've ever tasted has been Montezuma. But I stopped buying them when the business was sold, they put up their prices and started to preach

Dontsayyouloveme · 29/11/2022 17:59

Very overrated imo

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2022 18:00

They sell Montezuma's at our local Waitrose, where there used to be a fixture of Hotel Chocolat, but this has replaced it. it does seem as pricey for what it is as HC though.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 29/11/2022 18:02

It's also quite annoying that they seem to be the only option available in many cafes. If you don't want to buy them for any reason you must go without. Same as Jude ice-cream, etc.

A certain brand gets famous, captures the market and you are left without alternatives.

It tastes nice (specially the Fitzroy 74% dark bars), but I've gone off it for the reasons I've mentioned. I only get them occasionally when they release a seasonal item or new flavour I may fancy trying

schmooo1975 · 29/11/2022 18:10

I absolutely ADORE this chocolate, the only brand in years to provide a massive slab and it tastes amazing.

AtPanAtPan · 29/11/2022 18:14

I love Tony’s but it was too expensive for me.

LIDL have their own version of the salted caramel Tony’s and I’d say it’s better - it’s £1.99 a bar and it’s also got the ethical component to it

I’d give more detail but I ate it yesterday so I don’t have access to the packaging!

it’s blue orange and white with a map design on it. I’m praying they don’t suddenly discontinue it

It’s called Way To Go! And this is what is on their website www.lidl.co.uk/about-us/lidl-changes-for-the-better/way-to-go!-chocolate

Muddywoof · 29/11/2022 18:18

Oh I love it! I'm surprised so many don't.

I think instead of these Aldi vs Chocolonely wars, people should just acknowledge that our preference for the kind of chocolate we like was set when we were kids.

It's the same reason why a lot of Americans love Hershey's chocolate but it smells like vomit to a lot of Brits. American tastes have been cultivated to a different kind of chocolate.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2022 18:25

As a child in our house we had chocolate once a week on a Thursday. My parents were very strict about it, sweets were never allowed.
The chocolate I remember getting was a Mars Bar or maybe a Frys Chocolate Cream, but they don't really do it for me now.
At Christmas the After Eights would come out and we might get a selection 'stocking' with the white netting on but had to ask permission to have any.

carbedup · 29/11/2022 18:27

I love it but only have the almond one. I don't like that it's not in squares only bc I end up eating way more!!

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 29/11/2022 18:27

I've tried all of them and the chocolate is really not all that pleasant. All PR, as far as I am concerned
