Tony’s chocolate

What do you all think of it?

Tried it for the first time today and it tastes of nothing. You can taste the filling (we had a pretzel flavour) but couldn’t taste the chocolate at all. And why is it no in squares?! It’s so difficult to break apart and eat!

aibu? This is chocolate is weird!!

oh wow according to food navigator they’ve been booted off the slave free list because they use Callebaut chocolates,
Valrohna which own their own coca plantations are slave free and fair trade though.

I love Tony’s chocolate, I’m from Australasia and can’t bear the slimy palm oil taste of English chocolate. Revolting. I very rarely buy chocolate but if I do it will be Tony’s chocolate.

HeraldicBlazoning · 27/11/2022 15:23

We sell it in the charity shop where I volunteer, it's really expensive. I have bought some when we've had to half price it (because it hasn't sold) and I wasn't that impressed.

I still think the best milk chocolate is Lindt, or the Aldi Moser Roth.

InFiveMins · 27/11/2022 14:00

It's vile 🤢 almost as bad as Hersheys.

Thanks for that, I can now remember the horrible slime that is Hersheys!

MilkyYay · 27/11/2022 15:27

I don't like it. I know its ethical, or trying to be, but if something is so expensive it needs to really tasty, and Tony's isn't

Greeneyegirl · 27/11/2022 15:28

Have to basically take out a second mortgage to buy it so dont see how people afford it. I love Ritter Sport. The plain and all the flavours are amazing and its usually £1

Redraddisho27 · 27/11/2022 15:29

Reminds me of cooking chocolate

HeraldicBlazoning · 27/11/2022 15:29

And Ritter Sport is very good too - and palm oil free I think.

BatCheeseIsFine · 27/11/2022 15:29

I quite like it – it's not mindblowingly amazing but it's nice and I like the ethical credentials. But agree about the name, it drives me mad! "Lonely" is depressing, I don't want it on my chocolate and EVEN WORSE it doesn't fucking rhyme with "Tony"! It should be Tony's Chocoloney OBVIOUSLY Tony, what were you thinking?

BatCheeseIsFine · 27/11/2022 15:31

Love Ritter Sport too. I found out recently there's a whole Ritter Sport shop in Berlin and now I want to go.

InMySpareTime · 27/11/2022 15:31

It's not even so much the lack of flavour that annoys me about them, it's the texture.
Like candle wax or soap. It lacks the luxurious mouthfeel a bar of chocolate should have.

ganachee · 27/11/2022 15:33

I prefer the milk and salted caramel milk chocolate bars to Cadburys which has become inedible to me, as has galaxy. However, it’s a little too sweet for me. It’s a bit more expensive than Cadbury’s but not by loads. Ocado sell it at £3 for 180g bar. My favourite bar of chocolate is £5 for 85g and that for me is expensive.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 27/11/2022 15:33

I agree, it's overpriced and nasty. Not supposed to contain palm oil but definitely has that horrid, greasy taste

Notanotherusername4321 · 27/11/2022 15:33

Testina · 27/11/2022 14:08

I applaud their ethics, but the chocolate itself - at least the milk chocolate - is tasteless.

This.

wanted to like it, bought a variety or bars to try- just don’t.

sticking with co-op and M&S own brand. Now that cadburys and green and blacks has been mondelez’d and tastes of greasy palm oil and sugar.

Squiffy01 · 27/11/2022 15:35

The only one I like is the orange packet I think salted caramel or something?? I LOVE it so much. Best ever

my husband got some of the plain just milk chocolate and I had a bit and he had the rest didn’t like it at all.

Dolleey · 27/11/2022 15:37

Yes, it’s overrated. The caramel sea salt one is decent if it’s on offer as the caramel perks it up a bit. The plain ones aren’t nice and I was expecting to like the crispy wafer one, but it was disappointingly tasteless.

Great to be slavery-free (although their credentials aren’t rock solid there, it seems) but that’s all they have, which is why they have to plaster it everywhere from the cumbersome name to the depictions of chains on the wrapper. I find it a bit odd tbh - as a pp said they aren’t the only slavery-free chocolate manufacturer.

DH was going to buy me the Tony’s Advent Calendar. But I went for the Reese’s one instead.
He’s having a Lindt one.

BatCheeseIsFine · 27/11/2022 15:40

I don't think it's as expensive as it seems because the bar is very thick - you get a lot more choc than in a Lindt or G&B bar which are thinner. But if you like Cadbury's or Galaxy then the Tony's is going to seem very expensive.

ImperioMarch · 27/11/2022 15:40

I like it. It's reasonably decent chocolate but costs more because they actively try to avoid any slavery in their production line.

The different sized pieces represent the inequality in the chocolate trade.

Beeboppy · 27/11/2022 15:41

Ha yes, breaking it is near impossible, especially the unhelpfully big random segment. I like the pretzel one occasionally but breaking it annoys me enough to revert to buttons!

ImperioMarch · 27/11/2022 15:46

Boooooot · 27/11/2022 14:44

Out of interest what chocolate do people recommend? I’ve gotten bored of galaxy. Sainsburys do a Lindt pic n mix but at £10 a pop it’s quite a pricey treat!

One chocolate I love as it is as ethical as Toneys but nicer, thought unfortunately it MUCH harder to get hold of, is Femmes de Virunga. It supports women chocolate growers in the Congo.

FionnulaTheCooler · 27/11/2022 15:48

I don't like Tony's either. I bought a bar in asda a few weeks ago because it was on rollback so slightly cheaper, and people on here had recommended it. It was horrible and bitter, I won't be buying it again. Aldis own brand fruit and nut all the way.

TenoringBehind · 27/11/2022 15:51

I think it tastes really nasty, even worse than Cadbury’s. And annoying that it’s impossible to break sensibly.
