Tony’s chocolate

What do you all think of it?

Tried it for the first time today and it tastes of nothing. You can taste the filling (we had a pretzel flavour) but couldn’t taste the chocolate at all. And why is it no in squares?! It’s so difficult to break apart and eat!

aibu? This is chocolate is weird!!

I like any of the cabdury chocolate bars (have you tried a boost?! Or a gold wispa? Yumm), chocolate orange, after eights, lindor mmm

I like Aldi chocolate. The big bars of milk and white, fruit and nut, pretzel, almond are all good and about half the price of Tony’s

tbf aldi are one of the few big retailers to have joined the initiative started by Tony's choclonely to stop using ingredients produced using slave labour

I have no idea if it covers all of aldis own brand chocolate but still it's a good move

CatJumperTwat · 27/11/2022 14:52

I had no idea it was expensive because it's ethical. I wish I liked it now! I'll definitely give it another go if they change the formula.

Cadburys use cocoa beans harvested by children as young as 10

queenofarles · 27/11/2022 14:53

Also explained on their website, and refers to the fact that no other chocolate companies seem concerned by slavery in the chocolate industry.
maybe they haven’t updated their blurb in long time, most chocolate companies are fair trade now, even supermarket brands ones like M&S are FT ,
I personally would choose Green and Black or Côte d’Or over Tony’s .

Fairislefandango · 27/11/2022 14:53

I think it's really good! I can't believe you think Tony's is tasteless and prefer cheap, slimy Galaxy which has lower cocoa solids and is full of palm oil and soya lecithin.

Choco-loney? Cho-coloney?

Neither. It's choco - LONELY!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/11/2022 14:55

YANBU, tony’s is distinctly average chocolate.

RaraRachael · 27/11/2022 14:58

We tried buying it in Amsterdam but the stupid way of dispensing it got on my wick so we walked out,
Bought some in a supermarket,
1 Can't break it into squares - annoying
2 Not any better than any other chocolate
3 Expensive
4 Why isn't it called Tony's Chocoloney - so much better that Chocolonely

Mirabai · 27/11/2022 15:02

Tony’s, Cadbury’s - it’s all revolting.

Moomin37 · 27/11/2022 15:04

Absolutely love the dark and the salted caramel - best chocolate ever and the fact it doesn't break off in neat squares adds to the eating experience. I don't mind the price given the ethics / quality.

HungryandIknowit · 27/11/2022 15:05

Try Willie's Cacao - also ethically sourced etc. but much nicer, and comes in neat squares.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 27/11/2022 15:05

Why would it be called Chocoloney? What does that mean . Chocolonely has a meaning, explained upthread.

Fair Trade is not the same as slavery free.

The whole point of the Chocolonely is that is has "lonely" in it.

because he felt like he was the only guy in the chocolate industry that cared about eradicating slavery from the industry, he named his chocolate “Chocolonely”. Get it? The chocolate industry was a lonely place for 100% slave free crusaders!

i do agree about it being irritating to break up (but again, I think that's the point) and that it isn't great chocolate though.

I can't deal with the fact that it's Tony's ChocoLONELY and not ChocoLONEY.

Why lonely? It annoys me so much I can't bring myself to buy it.

You're not missing anything. It's expensive and nasty.

Whichever one it may be, the only word I can see is colon. It's like it's literally telling you it's shit.

Chickenwing2 · 27/11/2022 15:12

I read a mumsnet post where people were saying it was the best chocolate ever, so I was soooo disappointed when I bought some and it was rubbish. Tastes like cheap chocolate despite being very expensive. Will stick to dairymilk!

I agree!
Why lonely? Surely lonely is a bad thing?

SometimesNine · 27/11/2022 15:13

I applaud their ethical credentials, but am not impressed with the taste, and I have tried several flavours. Much prefer Kernow chocolate, and it's with Cocoa Horizons.

RoyalCorgi · 27/11/2022 15:15

The squares thing is annoying but I think it's delicious. It reminds me of how Cadbury's Dairy Milk used to taste before they messed around with the recipe.

I really like the sea salt and caramel bar and haven't tried any others. I also like their ethics.

Aldi chocolate is good and if feeling flush, I buy Willie's really dark cacao.

longwayoff · 27/11/2022 15:18

Vastly overrated. Dont like it at all.

Or different tastes.

I wish wish wish my dc knew what Cadbury chocolate used to taste like before they sold out and filled it full of an ethically irresponsible, cheap and inferior list of ingredients.

Elphame · 27/11/2022 15:20

They were deleted from the list of Slave Free Chocolate companies as they use a processer that also handles chocolate from non ethical sources.

Tony's try and wriggle out of it by saying that they pay extra to keep "their" beans separate but ultimately they are still supporting a company that makes money from child labour and modern slavery.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 27/11/2022 15:21

Well thanks to this thread I have demolished a whole bar of the salted caramel (birthday present i got today and was planning on eating slowly because I am on a diet!).
