Tony’s chocolate

What do you all think of it?

Tried it for the first time today and it tastes of nothing. You can taste the filling (we had a pretzel flavour) but couldn’t taste the chocolate at all. And why is it no in squares?! It’s so difficult to break apart and eat!

aibu? This is chocolate is weird!!

I tried it but thought it tasted it horrible. Mind you, I can’t stand Cadbury’s either. Now it’s made with Palm Oil, it tastes nothing like the chocolate of my childhood.

I much prefer the Irish chocolates in Lidl and Aldi. Tasty and good value.

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 27/11/2022 14:35

I like it, it tastes better than Cadbury at least

I think the people complaining it's expensive are missing the point about the slave trade in the chocolate industry...

Yes, this.

Dolleey · 27/11/2022 16:04

One chocolate I love as it is as ethical as Toneys but nicer, thought unfortunately it MUCH harder to get hold of, is Femmes de Virunga. It supports women chocolate growers in the Congo.

I love this too. There’s no comparison with Tony’s. Far too easy to eat, though, and definitely a step up price-wise from supermarket chocolate so not a habit I can indulge as often as I’d like.

SiobhanSharpe · 27/11/2022 16:05

I don't get the love for Cadburys at all (except for the Flake bar which is apparently still made to the old recipe, before the Yanks took over. )
Tony's tastes a bit like Cadbury's used to taste (I like a thick chocolate bar) but Hotel Chocolat is better, albeit very expensive.
Have you tried Ritter Sport bars? They come in a huge range with eg milk choc whole hazelnut, white choc/hazelnut and dark choc hazelnut. Plus many more.
They're not too expensive at £1.50 per 100 gram bar -- the only trouble is finding a stockist! ( have no personal interest in the company.)

BatCheeseIsFine · 27/11/2022 15:31

Love Ritter Sport too. I found out recently there's a whole Ritter Sport shop in Berlin and now I want to go.

Oh there is, and it's FABULOUS. Close to Checkpoint Charlie.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 27/11/2022 16:05

It’s sickly and tasteless. Aldi Moser Roth milk chocolate is probably my favourite and Green and Blacks is quite nice.

ClubTropicanaVIP · 27/11/2022 16:05

I hate it too. Similar to chocolate in the US….like eating wax with a hint of cocoa!

Thankfully there’s a ton of other chocolate out there that hits the spot 😆

NameChangeForARaisin · 27/11/2022 16:07

I like their ethos but the chocolate itself tastes rubbish.
I cant abide Lindt either, far too greasy.
Aldi Moser Roth Range is very nice.

misskatamari · 27/11/2022 16:15

I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve tried but I really don’t get the hype. Get thee to Aldi and try their choceur and Moser Roth. Fraction of the price and utterly gorgeous, they’re my favourite chocolate!

😄 just read the thread and see many others also have excellent Aldi and Lidl tastes 🤣

BelenaConhamHarter · 27/11/2022 16:18

The orange one is worth it.

Does anyone know another bar that isn't directly or indirectly made with slave labour? I know Montezuma tick a lot of boxes but they don't do a regular bar that can be bought in the petrol station / corner shop.

Or am I going to the wrong shops?

Strawberrypicnic · 27/11/2022 16:24

I love the dark one with almonds and sea salt. It tastes like a real treat despite the fact it is dark chocolate. Actually, I've noticed it is about the only dark chocolate you can buy where cocoa mass is still listed before sugar in the ingredients. Most other chocolate tastes horribly sweet to me now. It is 'expensive' compared to other chocolate but I guess that's the true price of producing chocolate with a fair supply chain.

BettyOBarley · 27/11/2022 16:24

Tasteless - just like Hotel Chocolat...
Someone bought me a small box recently and they tasted of nothing! Ended up in the bin.

Fairislefandango · 27/11/2022 16:26

Agree Aldi chocolate is really good too, and cheaper!

Blip · 27/11/2022 16:28

Tony's VISION FOR THE FUTURE is that their chocolate bars should ideally be a slavery free product.

At present Tony's is NOT a slavery free product and effectively when you buy a bar you are funding modern slavery, just like when you buy from pretty much any other chocolate bar maker.

They’re only technically not slavery free

only due to using a company in their supply chain that does use slavery, although the elements where slavery exist for BC don’t impact the Tony’s supply chain.

Not one slave is used in the production of Tony’s chocolate.

MeridianB · 27/11/2022 16:34

The definition of ‘not worth the calories’.

A close friend recommended it so I tried it. Totally forgettable.

neveradullmoment99 · 27/11/2022 16:35

I tasted it once and loved it.
Tasted it again and it was shit.
Maybe I was hungry at the time. Honestly, its not that good.
It tastes similar to Yorkie chocolate which is equally shit.

Iamboredandgoingforatwix · 27/11/2022 16:36

It's nice, but it's not worth paying the extra money for. Most of the people I know from abroad seem to love Cadburys.

I used to love Milka as a kid - seemed really exotic in the 80's 😀

It's a gimmick.

I like Milka chocolate

TrippinEdBalls · 27/11/2022 16:38

Deliberately making it irritating to break up is such a stupid decision - surely the idea with ethical products is to show people you can get something just as nice without the ethical compromise, not to make it deliberately worse so that it feels even more worthy. And that particular way of making a point feels like something a sixth-former would come up with, as is the 'lonely' thing - I know that's mean of me because it's well-meant!

Blip · 27/11/2022 16:41

@PeachyPears

Tony's themselves do not claim their chocolate to be slavery free

tonyschocolonely.com/uk/en/why-we-still-wont-say-were-100-slave-free

Boooooot · 27/11/2022 16:41

Imagine having you comments deleted on a thread about chocolate @PeachyPears 🤣

Thanks all! Completely forgot about Ritter sport which we love! We don’t really go to Aldi or Lidl but next time I do I’ll have a go at their chocolate.
