To shower every day or not?

Greenballoons · 14/11/2022 22:12

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

Ignore mumsnet on this issue - they seem to think anything less than a shower per hour is disgusting. I shower twice a week and have never smelled bad - and I live with people willing to be honest with me about it. They let me know during the couple of very hot weeks we get if I'm getting ripe earlier than usual.

Shower as often as you need and feel comfortable with. No one in the real world cares how clean you are unless you smell.

Quite the opposite I think - Mumsnet is the only place I know of where grown adults are naturally fragrant and don't need to wash their bodies every day. Everyone I know in real life accepts daily washing as part of life.

figital · 14/11/2022 22:49

Personally I like to shower everyday. I usually shower before bed. I think it's completely fine for people to shower less than that if they feel they don't need to, but OP (sorry to be so bold) don't your intimate areas get a bit smelly? I assume you must was 'down there' daily? Especially when you have your period (if you have them).

My kids have a bath every other day.

BlackcurrantSorbet · 14/11/2022 22:18

I find this very odd. A shower or bath once per day is the minimum with everybody in my family, yes including children. In summer, usually twice. And then additional showers after sports etc. It's nice to be clean and fresh when you get up in the morning, and also when you go to bed. It takes a couple of minutes, I can't understand why you wouldn't do that at least once per day?

Lucky you can afford the heating and the water bills

PeloFondo · 14/11/2022 22:49

Shower most days, in the evening after I've exercised. Occasionally skip a day (if I haven't exercised)
Hair washed twice a week and I tie it up in the shower to keep it out the way and have the shower head at neck height!
I think if you properly wash then it's easier to skip a day - I use an exfoliating cloth with soap, and really get under my arms, feet etc then use a shower gel and use a antiperspirant that's applied at night. Rather than swishing a bit of shower gel on my hand and expecting to be clean Grin

You know.... Wash your hands and face and what not.... Just not in the shower.

At the sink for example or in a bath...

So I’m not British and this is most emphatically not a thing where I’m from. We shower or we bathe, but I have no idea what ‘a wash’ is, if it differs from those things and these responses aren’t making it much clearer.

Vikinga · 14/11/2022 22:50

Glitteratitar · 14/11/2022 22:41

Those who say you don’t need to shower every day but need a wash everyday, what’s the difference?

I assume a shower is jumping into the shower and washing yourself, whether or not you wash your hair. So what is a wash?

Sink wash washing armpits and bottom. Those are the bits that tend to get smelly

DuchessDandelion · 14/11/2022 22:51

DuchessDandelion · 14/11/2022 22:41

A wash would mean you wash your intimate areas, underarms and face with warm/hot water (and soap, where appropriate).

It can be done standing next to the wash basin, or while having a bath..If in hospital with a sponge while in bed, or in a pinch while travelling with baby wipes.

@IMissVino how does this not make it clear?

Benjispruce4 · 14/11/2022 22:51

Quick daily shower- shower cap on. Wash hair 3 times a week.

Mummyof287 · 14/11/2022 22:52

Ah finally, someone with common sense!
(Although be prepared for the mums net onslaught of perfectionists telling you your dirty, gross, smelly and everything else!)
Full disclosure, i bath/shower (and wash my hair at the same time) every 2nd or 3rd day.I don't enjoy the 'getting wet' or the general palava of it all either.Like you say it would be a pain having to sacrafice relaxing time in the evening or sleep in the morning EVERY DAY! And often i wouldn't have time even without sacraficing those things....not sure how anyone else does tbh.
I don't have a dirty job, do anything 'outdoorsy' or play sports that make me sweat...I live quite a sedentary sort of lifestyle.
The exceptions are when I'm on my period (when I shower daily) and if its a particularly hot day in the summer and I get sweaty/sticky with suncream/dirty feet from wearing sandals etc)
My young DDs are bathed every other day, often daily in the summer as they are less covered up by clothes, so get grubbier.
DH showers every day in the week as he has a physical job and gets sweaty.
I don't think we are being unreasonable.

Tinymushroom · 14/11/2022 22:53

I have a daily morning shower, DH has a daily evening one. DC have a shower every day too and the odd bath.

Having fresh smelling skin and hair really gives me a boost, I love the green or blue Pears bar soap

FancyFanny · 14/11/2022 22:53

I shower every morning because I am 100% confident I smell nice afterwards and I like the routine of it.

I have a friend who always likes to berate people for showering too much- she's one of these that likes to say we don't need to shower everyday and wears natural type deodorants. I once got too close and the whiff from her armpits was disgusting!

IMissVino · 14/11/2022 22:53

@Greenballoons This is a pretty intense topic on MN. I find it interesting that this is your first thread, and your comments are honestly starting to cross the line of believability.

Sorry but this is really awful. You'd wait until other people have to mention that you smell before you shower? Why would you not just do it daily and avoid this embarrassment for you and for others?

PurpleButterflyWings · 14/11/2022 22:53

I shower every 3 days as a minimum and on a weekly basis as a maximum.

Going a WEEK without a shower?! 🤢🤮 Bet there's a lot of flies buzzing around in your house @Greenballoons Shock

BlackcurrantSorbet · 14/11/2022 22:54

Greenballoons · 14/11/2022 22:48

Well, I don’t get into tube! I work from home or I go to the office which is 5mins away.

Especially when someone is working from home why to shower every day? I understand when someone goes to the gym, walks a lot etc. but when you are just at home and going from the sofa to the desk and back, what is the point?

Because personal hygiene??

This. ^ Glad someone else said it.

BHRK · 14/11/2022 22:54

I shower daily, anything less is a bit gross in my opinion. Wash hair 2-3 times a week. Kids washed daily as their hand and face get sticky and they don’t always wipe bums properly!

PeloFondo · 14/11/2022 22:55

@IMissVino think of people who are unable to move from bed and have to be therefore cared for in bed. You can be clean without a shower or bath! Plenty of hot water, a flannel, and soap
You lather up the soap on a damp flannel and then rinse using the flannel, dry off
Kind of like hot cloth cleansing on your face but your whole body
When I started as a carer I hadn't washed someone before but it's just common sense really

IMissVino · 14/11/2022 22:55

That does make it clear, thank you. However, that wasn’t said in response to me, it was said to @Greenballoons. I didn’t see it, as I didn’t scroll up and read every comment by and to every poster on the thread, and was just responding to the people who had tagged me. Do please forgive me.

Purplebunnie · 14/11/2022 22:56

What is this obsession with showering. I grew up in the 60's nobody had showers because houses didn't have them so it was a bath and most people had 1 bath a week and I can tell you people did not smell.

Ponderingwindow · 14/11/2022 22:57

I shower every day before bed. Sometimes my shower lasts at most a minute. I like to get the dirt and grime of the day off before getting into bed.

I also find if I don’t shower, my skin gets extremely itchy.

BlackcurrantSorbet · 14/11/2022 22:57

Greenballoons · 14/11/2022 22:21

I shower every 3 days as a minimum and on a weekly basis as a maximum .

My hair is really dry, never oily and very curly as well. Washing them takes about 30min.

Then when I shower I shave legs etc., body scrub, heels rub and the body part takes another 15min.

Put another 15min to dress, put cream on, clean the bathroom from fallen hair etc.

In total body and hair takes me an hour!

I am very surprised when people say it takes 3mins! And in this cold and dark in the mornings is the very last thing I want to do… brrrr!

Oh come on.

It doesn't take an hour to wash properly each day. A shower can be 2-3 minutes.

No, you don't have to wash your hair or shaves your legs every time. 😒🙄

And yes it's obviously pretty disgusting to only shower once per week.

I don't believe this post is real having read this update.

shared water too

ClaudineClare · 14/11/2022 22:57

I'm in my 50s and when I was growing up people didn't shower every day. The only shower we had at home was a rubber thing attached to the bath taps for hair washing. I don't remember exactly how often but I certainly didn't bath every day. We couldn't afford it. I washed thoroughly and I didn't smell. Neither did my friends

Same here growing up, but I think we probably would have all smelled a bit to modern noses, we just didn't notice it on each other at the time.

I love having a shower most days, sets me up for the day and is the smallest of luxuries. I sometimes skip a day if my skin is feeling a bit dry, but I don't like to do that often.

DuchessDandelion · 14/11/2022 22:59

@IMissVino I'm sorry, I was getting wound up by some of the responses on this thread and was unreasonably short with you.
