To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

Yep - I’m sure. There’s a huge difference between showering regularly and showering everyday… showering often vs showering everyday as well.

Like I said there’s other ways to be hygienic that don’t need to be taking a shower (that are far less impact on the environment too).

We obviously have very different circles of friends. Possibly it makes a difference that I live in a warm climate. Also myself and just about everyone I know exercise regularly, making showering a must.

Zuno · 16/11/2022 14:01

Exercising regularly does not make daily showering a must - my friends exercise regularly - they shower after exercise but that doesn’t equate to daily showering.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/11/2022 14:02

I shower everyday and I wash my hair everyday

lottie198 · 16/11/2022 14:03

I shower every day, sometimes twice. I feel gross if I don't shower before I get dressed. Doesn't need to be long, just a quick 5 minute wash. I used to wash my hair daily but since having a baby I wash it 2-3 times per week because I just do not have the time!
Everyone has different hygiene standards but I think I wash every day is just basic.
My little boy is 10 months and generally I bathe him every other day. I wash his hair about twice a week. I used to bathe him every night and wash his hair every night but realised he doesn't really need it.

I genuinely don’t understand the level of hostility shown by some posters here, then again, this is mumsnet so I suppose I should have expected it.

OP asked a question and people have responded with how often they shower/ wash. Some every day and others not. Those of you getting angry and passive aggressive and accusing people of trying to ‘defend their reasons for wanting to be dirty’ and all but causing a pandemic for not having a full body shower every day - IMO that’s a ridiculous thing to say. Nobody is ‘defending being dirty’ - they’re answering a question about how often they wash.

I listened to a really interesting podcast recently about how in modern society some people actively seek out things to be offended by, and things to get needlessly angry about as a way of releasing pent up feelings and I’d say that definitely relates to some posters on this thread.

I wash every other day, I’m not dirty. If you choose to wash more or less frequently than that, good for you for knowing your own body, what it needs and how to take care of it properly.

Now if you’ll excuse me, i’m off for a shower.

@Lolabear38 well said

I shower every day - I feel really "icky" if I don't

pocketvenuss · 16/11/2022 17:39

I'm fascinated where you may be from as in my experience, everywhere washes more than the British. The British are the only people I have ever heard saying they don't wash daily

queenofarles · 16/11/2022 17:39

I would love to know how you know when these people last bathed. Someone who had a shower every second day would not "reek". There are also the many people we come into contact with who don't smell - how do you know they shower daily? There are an awful lot of assumptions on here.

it’s not difficult to assume they don’t bathe daily ,

i really don’t believe any of these stories "I don’t sweat so I don’t shower or I smell just fine using a flannel" do people wash under their boobs with a flannel or wipe their behinds with a flannel too 😵‍💫? I just don’t believe a grown up who goes to the toilet daily won’t start to smell if they skip showering .

why would you assume people who don’t smell don’t bathe daily? How do you know?

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 16/11/2022 18:19

I shower every morning. It takes less than 5 minutes, wakes me up and I look forward to it. I usually shower again in the evening if I have had an active day or been to the gym. I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. I have a public facing job, so can't go around with greasy hair. If I worked from home I would probably go a bit longer between washing it.

I was brought up having a weekly bath, so I don't think it's how you are brought up.

Personally, I would definitely not smell fresh after 3 days, and would absolutely stink after a week. Especially my feet 😅

dementedpixie · 16/11/2022 19:15

I must confess that I have been in the shower 3 times today Shock. First thing where I washed my hair (hadn't washed hair since Saturday) as i always wash in the morning. Then i did a zumba class just before lunchtime and had a quick shower to wash pits and bits. This evening I did an attack class so was sweaty again and needed another quick wash.

Do I get a prize for using the most water in 1 day?!

Or maybe they just clean themselves adequately after using the bathroom? Lots of people use flushable wipes or simply do a good enough job themselves.

I don’t think people are skipping showering though. They just do it at different intervals to others. They’re still washing.

If you need to shower every day as opposed to every other day to make sure you don’t smell after using the toilet then perhaps you’re not doing a good enough job cleaning at the time? Not an accusation, just a thought.

Again, I just don’t get why some people are getting this worked up about strangers showering habits 😂

Victoriaplum81 · 16/11/2022 19:27

I bath or shower daily and wash hair every three days. I have a shower daily because I need to wash my armpits and genitals.. I don’t sweat a lot or exercise but my nether regions and pits wouldn’t be pleasant after three days of no washing like you’re suggesting! I work full time, have a four year old who isn’t the best sleeper. However my husband and I take it in turns to put him to bed but we both manage a shower after this and are on the sofa to watch tv by 830.

I have no idea why you find washing such hard work? Surely a small bath or shower with a shower cap to avoid getting hair wet would take 10 mins max!

Well I was told off for being 'selfish' with my two a day so who knows what three makes you. Shock A disgrace maybe? Grin
You should just sit about in your own sweat, maybe let it air dry?

JackTorrance · 16/11/2022 22:28

I live somewhere where water is never done pissing down from the sky, I refuse to feel selfish to my two daily showers.

onlythreenow · 17/11/2022 06:21

Okay, so you stand next to someone and they smell - how do you know when they last bathed, it could have been a week ago, or two weeks ago? There is a difference between people who shower every other day and those who shower once a week. Honestly, the outrage on here about people who don't shower every day is pathetic! I visit people in care homes - they don't have daily showers yet still manage not to "reek" as one charming type put it.

FluffyPancake · 17/11/2022 06:28

Shower typically every other day in colder months (daily in the summer when sweaty). Wash hair twice a week.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/11/2022 08:52

I shower every day in the morning v quickly but there’s no way I could ‘stand in the warm water luxuriating for 10 mins’ like some posters because the ceiling would v quickly be black - even with a fan and high ceiling. Don’t understand how people can get away with this! Also have to add 30 secs to each shower to dry the tiles as it is a battle to stop mould appearing in the grout. Maybe it’s just me.

chaosmaker · 17/11/2022 11:38

@Lolabear38 maybe people have bidets?

Do you use the free sky water to shower in though? Unprocessed, unfiltered and pollution. That's quite different to water that's been through a water treatment plant and doesn't cost anything either!

BorisJohnsonsHair · 17/11/2022 11:43

ColeensBoot · 14/11/2022 22:14

Grim. So that explains why so many people stink on public transport.

Don't be ridiculous. Just because you don't get your whole body wet it doesn't mean you stink.

When I was a child we didn't have a shower, so you would wash at the sink. You can be perfectly clean this way, and it's better for your skin.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 17/11/2022 11:46

I work 10+ hours day starting at 5.30am. I have a whores wash most mornings and I loathe showers . Much prefer a bath plus it's not fair getting in the shower at 5.30am and wake everyone
I whores wash 5 times a week and bathe 2/3 times a week

Notjustanymum · 17/11/2022 11:48

When I’m WFH, if I don't feel sweaty and I don’t smell and I’m not going out, I sometimes skip a shower for a day, never longer (but I’ll still wash).
However, I always put clean clothes on daily, and I shower before going to the Office, or going out, or shopping Etc. and if I do rigorous exercise, I might have two showers in a day.
As PP have said, it’s ok as long as you don’t smell!

maddy68 · 17/11/2022 11:53

I would feel dreadful if I did t shower daily
