To ask how much you drink in a week?

I used to not drink at all but once I had my DD I started having half a glass of wine in the evening after I put her down. Over the years (she’s 10 now) that has increased. I’d now say that I drink at least two glasses of wine every night and at weekends an extra couple of beers / a cocktail. Is that a lot? What do you drink?

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 10/11/2022 18:33

I do think that’s a lot. These days I hardly drink at all but then I hardly go out. There are too many alcoholics on both sides of my family to contemplate drinking alcohol at home. The last time I had an alcoholic drink was a glass of wine with dinner while on holiday in September

Putonyourshoes · 10/11/2022 18:34

I’d say it is quite a lot. A couple of glasses of wine a night equates to 3 bottles of wine a week? Plus extra for your weekend cocktails.
I’d say on average I drink a bottle of wine a week, either in one night at the weekend or sometimes over the course of the week with meals or a glass after my little one is in bed. Maybe once a month I’ll have a few gin and tonics at the weekend. And I probably drink the most alcohol out of my friendship group of early thirties women.

Lcb123 · 10/11/2022 18:34

I always have at least 2-3 days of no alcohol that’s recommended. Otherwise, probably a bottle of wine over friday/Saturday and a G&T or two. Id be a bit worried if you feel you need to drink every night

Itsacakebaby · 10/11/2022 18:35

3 bottles of wine a week 😧.

I know it's over the recommended weekly allowance. Definitely need to cut down.

CloudybutMild · 10/11/2022 18:36

It depends if it’s a “standard” 175ml glass, or a generous large measure of more like 300ml.

If the latter then it’s a bit more than is recommended, but hardly unusual.

thaegumathteth · 10/11/2022 18:37

I don't have any but I'm definitely an anomaly among my friends

Inasec24 · 10/11/2022 18:37

The guidelines say 14 units a week with 2 alcohol free days. I try to stick to that but to be honest, I would happily have one drink per evening once the kids are in bed, maybe 2 on a Friday and Saturday! I have to make the effort to make sure I have 2 evening a week I dont drink at all. Easy habit to fall in to.

OnlyFannys · 10/11/2022 18:38

Generally dont drink Sunday-Thursday nights and over the weekend I will have 1 some times 2 bottles of wine. Maybe once a month i will have a more silly weekend and drink more. Drinking e very night is a bad habit to get into, if you can see off during the week I would recommend doing so before you become dependent

MuchTooTired · 10/11/2022 18:39

I don’t drink anything on an average week. I’m a binge drinker so get absolutely wasted once or twice a year which is terrible, I really should grow up!

AuntieMarys · 10/11/2022 18:41

I drink 3 days a week...probably 2-3 bottles of wine in total. I'm in my 60s, and fit.

Same here. I don't drink at home. Only when I go out. So on average once a month. Maybe 2 glasses of wine with a meal out

U2HasTheEdge · 10/11/2022 18:42

I have a Tia Maria every evening. They are only 0.5 units. I measure them.

Every couple of weeks or so, I will see a friend and I will have a bottle of wine, and maybe a cider or something with food.

Sometimes, ill drink half a bottle of wine at the weekend with a meal, but that's probably less than once a month.

DrWhitWho · 10/11/2022 18:42

Nothing.

Ill have a few cocktails on a night out or my birthday but regular drinking isn’t ok, shouldn’t be normalised and is less than idea to do around kids

SweetPetrichor · 10/11/2022 18:43

I don’t drink on a weekly basis, just an occasional one when I fancy it, but DP drinks weekly and I’d say he has a beer on a Friday/Saturday and usually a whiskey or two after. Maybe a whisky on a Sunday. He’s not a big drinker either.

spuddel · 10/11/2022 18:44

I have a bottle of wine, sometimes a bit more over the weekend. Can't face it in the week usually. I think if it's spread out like that you're fine, unless you really can't stop and need to drink which may be an issue.

Suzi888 · 10/11/2022 18:44

Around 1/2 bottles of wine. Sometimes nothing, it was creeping up. Both DH and I love a glass (large!) it became unhealthy.

Chattycathydoll · 10/11/2022 18:45

Can’t really afford it now but used to have a glass of wine with Friday night dinner (I’m a Jew, Friday night is family night) and one in the evening when DD is bed, another on Saturday and the rest of the bottle to cook with. So, 3 glasses a week. I do think 2 a night is quite a lot.

Mummieslncorporated · 10/11/2022 18:45

Usually no more than two units a week. Often none. (Waiting for people to come and say that those of us that don't drunk much are lying/underestimating. I am not )

That would be a lot for me, and over the recommended amount.

LBFseBrom · 10/11/2022 18:45

It doesn't sound like a lot to me; I assume your two evening drinks are with or after a meal. As long as you don't feel you have to have a drink, don't worry.

I don't drink at all now so am hardly an expert.

InFiveMins · 10/11/2022 18:45

I wouldn't say it's a lot at all.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 10/11/2022 18:48

Half a bottle of wine every night wouldn't be great.

Are you eating well?

I suppose if you were eating well and exercising it wouldn't be the worse thing.

How is the rest of your lifestyle?

bottomsup33 · 10/11/2022 18:50

During lockdown I was polishing off a full bottle of wine most nights!

Now I'll have a bottle over the weekend and maybe one gin and tonic during the week but I'd say I definitely have at least 4-5 alcohol free days per week.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/11/2022 18:51

It’s more than the (arbitrary) NHS guidelines say you “should” drink, but I wouldn’t say it’s particularly heavy drinking.

I generally try not to drink Monday - Thursday unless it’s a special occasion and will usually opt for soft drinks if I go out with friends on those days. At the weekend I’ll usually have a couple of bottles of wine at least, perhaps even up to four; however, as it stands I currently haven’t had a drink since mid-October as just haven’t felt like one. During the last two - three weeks of December with so many work and client festive events, Christmas parties, pre-Christmas social meets, drinks and meals with friends etc I can easily drink 100 units a week because I’ll be doing something or another every evening (occasionally more than one thing an evening!)

Broadly, I think if you’re fit and healthy, don’t drink when you’re alone / feel sad, lonely or down or otherwise drowning some riot, and your drinking doesn't negatively affect your behaviour, relationships, work or mood then you’re fine.

laddersandsnakes12 · 10/11/2022 18:51

I think that's quite a lot. I usually have a couple of glasses of wine / a G&T / a cocktail on Friday and Saturday night, then maybe one or two glasses of wine throughout the week. Rarely any more than that unless going to a party, but even then I usually stop after 3 drinks because I hate the feeling of being drunk.

momlette · 10/11/2022 18:52

Thing is you should use the recommended limit / guidance as a benchmark not what others do. The big drinkers who are often in denial because they are drinking 1/2 bottle a night of nice wine out of a civilised wine glass will say you’re fine and it’s nothing. They have a problem with alcohol so not a very good gauge. Sounds like you are not too far off and it is too much whatever way you look at it. It takes a toll on your health and you will likely see and feel a positive difference when you stop.
