I used to not drink at all but once I had my DD I started having half a glass of wine in the evening after I put her down. Over the years (she’s 10 now) that has increased. I’d now say that I drink at least two glasses of wine every night and at weekends an extra couple of beers / a cocktail. Is that a lot? What do you drink?

I drink very little.
Maybe one glass of wine a fortnight.

SirenSays · 10/11/2022 18:57

A few cocktails every 6 months or so. I think I overdid it as a teen 😅 I haven't been into drinking since I was about 22. If I were you I'd probably try to cut down a little.

FleecyBlanketPerson · 10/11/2022 18:58

Mid 20s with no kids I was pissed every weekend night. Grew up around that culture, was allowed to drink at 13 (just a few- how bad is that?). After having children never went out drinking as we didn't have any sitters or family that would help us. So we would have a bottle of wine between us twice a week maybe more on the weekend then it became that every night. We were feeling shit every morn and my head aches were awful. We both cut it out and feel better now. Funnily we paired it with cutting out sources of stress like our awful families. Best thing ever for us. Not for everyone but for us it feels great.

Chikapu · 10/11/2022 18:59

I don't drink any alcohol. I was a weekend binge drinker but I stopped when waking up with a hangover became too awful.

CheesePleaseLoueese · 10/11/2022 19:00

Probably half a bottle of wine in total over the course of a week

AnyFucker · 10/11/2022 19:01

I don’t drink any alcohol Mon-Thursday and then have about half a bottle of good red on the other nights. That is an average week. If there are any nights out or other socialising it would be more. I don’t socialise much though 😊

BamBamBilla · 10/11/2022 19:01

1 - 2 measures of whiskey or brandy on a Sunday afternoon/evening.

HalfWower · 10/11/2022 19:02

I drink the same as you, maybe a bit more.

slowquickstep · 10/11/2022 19:03

More to the point OP can you go without a drink. When was the last time you had a drink free day, and how often do you have one ? I think you know that you are boozing way too much and may be dependent.

notacooldad · 10/11/2022 19:06

Most weeks I dont drink.
I had a party a few weeks ago to celebrate a birthday and that was my first hangover in decades. Apart from the party last drink I had was probably in September.

Tansytea · 10/11/2022 19:06

I would say probably anything between half a bottle to a bottle of wine a week. I only really drink wine, we do buy a bottle of Bailey's at Christmas, I might occasionally have a beer, a couple of times a year at most.

YeahThanks · 10/11/2022 19:06

I used to drink a similar amount, but slowed down to a point where I haven’t had anything for a few months. My life is better for it.

Davethecat2001 · 10/11/2022 19:08

I have a thimble full every other Christmas.

I always over do it..

Darbs76 · 10/11/2022 19:10

I rarely drink at all these days. I don’t drink anything at home apart from December when I will have a snowball every evening (make my own not the small bottles) over the Xmas Eve - New year period. Then nothing unless I go to a wedding. I used to drink up to 4 bottles of wine over the weekend, sometimes more. It was not healthy and it’s unfortunate that the drinking culture in the U.K. is like it is. I was drinking at 13, I’m glad my kids weren’t. My son had his first drink at 17 and they haven’t grown up around drunk or seen their parents drunk. I hope they have a sensible relationship with alcohol

Claudia84 · 10/11/2022 19:10

I don't think you should be worried unless you feel it's getting you down. It's more than you should have but not more than a lot.
I suspect that most people will only comment the actual amount they have if it's less than that.
I'm an all or nothing kind of gal so what I will say is when I do drink I will drink far far more than that and still function. But it's no good for my health.

cheapertorent · 10/11/2022 19:11

One night every couple of months, I might have 3 or 4 drinks.

carefulcalculator · 10/11/2022 19:11

I think you are drinking a lot, you are drinking more than the recommended weekly amount and it sounds like you are drinking every night which is also against recommendations.

I ocassionally have one drink, even more occasionally have two. Most weeks I don't drink. I used to drink too much, but I was never really in denial.

Claudia84 · 10/11/2022 19:11

I am absolutely ASTOUNDED at people with opened and unfinished bottles of wine in the house. I mean. I don't know anyone who does that.

If we ever buy wine we end up chucking some away and that is with two of us.

We rarely open a bottle for this reason.

Heyhoniddy · 10/11/2022 19:14

I think the challenge is that the amount slowly creeps up. 2 glasses became half a bottle and when stressed a whole bottle nearly.

KillingLoneliness · 10/11/2022 19:14

I don’t drink at home unless is a special occasion like Christmas. I may have the occasional cider or gin if we ever visit a pub but that’s about it so to me it really does sound like a lot.

Royalbloo · 10/11/2022 19:15

Sorry but that sounds fine to me. As long as you can go without then I personally wouldn’t worry. But that’s me…

Ragwort · 10/11/2022 19:16

I have the same as you OP, a couple of glasses most evenings... I don't binge drink and I never get hangovers but I do enjoy wine most evenings. It probably is too much, but I enjoy it and can afford it.

DarkKarmaIlama · 10/11/2022 19:17

0 units a week.

Royalbloo · 10/11/2022 19:17

But I also don’t really mind drinking alone (just one or two), I don’t get miserable or down, it’s just nice. Like a bit of cake or something?

people can be addicted to sugar too…
