I used to not drink at all but once I had my DD I started having half a glass of wine in the evening after I put her down. Over the years (she’s 10 now) that has increased. I’d now say that I drink at least two glasses of wine every night and at weekends an extra couple of beers / a cocktail. Is that a lot? What do you drink?

I would say I'm a non-drinker and don't tend to drink at all really. I might have one or two (or three) Vodka and lemonades on a special occasion like Christmas, which was coincidentally the last time I drank. I'm pregnant now so probably won't drink for the next year or two, if my experience with my first is anything to go by, as I felt more comfortable not drinking at all until i stopped breastfeeding.

On the other hand, my DH drinks regularly so compared to him, I'd say it's pretty average? 🤷🏻‍♀️

MichaelFabricantWig · 10/11/2022 19:43

I drank on average a bottle of wine a night. Sometimes more. Rarely less.

Now I don’t drink alcohol at all. Over 14 months sober and no intention of ever having any again.

H1Drangea · 10/11/2022 19:43

I drink too much , but I’m fine with that
2 alcohol free nights , and about 4 glasses of wine the other nights
I’m in my 60s with no DC at home , just DH and I

bigdecisionstomake · 10/11/2022 19:44

I usually abstain Monday through Thursday then drink around half a bottle of wine a night on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

Might have a drink during the week if I'm out for a meal/with mates but not usually at home.

Going through a number of life stresses at the moment and have only had two alcohol free days in the last two weeks so need to reel it back in again from next week I think.

Dangermouse80 · 10/11/2022 19:45

4 doubles a night here, drinking crept into every night during lockdown. However completely cut out all chocolate / desserts due to diabetes risk. All blood tests have come back fine.
I wouldn't worry unless you feel it is a problem. If I decide to have a night out and need to drive I don't miss it. If you feel you need it then you may have a problem. In my opinion it is more unhealthy to be overweight but that is more accepted than being someone who drinks now!

hassletassle · 10/11/2022 19:47

I don't drink at all now. I'm too old and tired and my body can't cope with even a small wine - I get migraines. I used to have a glass of wine every night. Just a habit like any other. Now I don't even want to drink!

BankseyVest · 10/11/2022 19:47

Depends, sometimes on week days nothing, if I've had a shit day I might have a g&t or two. Weekends a couple of g&t's on an evening or a few VATs

Boooooot · 10/11/2022 19:49

I make a bottle of red last one or two weeks but I’m aware that’s very mumsnet of me! Most people I know drink most nights and I used to. I just completely went off it when I had my son.

RingMagpie · 10/11/2022 19:50

Depends how big the glasses are. 500mls every night is a fair bit. 250 not so much.

Pebble55 · 10/11/2022 19:52

20-25 beers every week, a couple each night after the kids are asleep and then a couple more on weekends. I exercise around 5-6 hours a week to offset it. Couldn't live without it

VestaTilley · 10/11/2022 19:54

I’ve drunk far less since having a child. The thought of being up early with a toddler while hungover fills me with dread.

Then because I didn’t drink as much, my tolerance for alcohol has gone down, so now if I even have a glass of wine I can taste it in the morning, and it affects my sleep.

I rarely drink now, if I do I actually prefer to drink at lunch time if we have friends over or go (rarely) to the pub. So it’s usually one glass of wine, one Aperol spritz or a G&T or the odd glass of sherry. But max about one a week. I don’t think I’ve had a drink of anything alcoholic though for two weeks since my family all came over for my DF’s birthday lunch - one glass of red.

Doorpalms · 10/11/2022 19:40

A bottle of wine most nights of the week. I don't think it’s that odd, lots drink most nights

I don’t think it’s odd in UK as a nation of boozers but it’s likely cause you health issues further down the road which can spring up suddenly. The liver is always fine until it suddenly isn’t anymore. We shouldn’t compare notes as you are using people who drink every night as a good comparison

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 10/11/2022 19:58

I only drink when I'm out. Probably a couple of drinks once a week or so.

I got in the habit of having one after work, and then two, and then three etc. Now I don't keep alcohol in the house.

I also drink massively more after lockdown. I drink about half a bottle of wine a night with mom/ Tuesday off but probably could drink a bottle of gin in a week easily. I'm very worried about it but I don't think I'm in the right place to stop.

I'm very similar to you - I don't drink at all now, haven't for the past couple of years. I have histamine intolerance and alcohol is a no-no. Before that I used to have a glass of wine before dinner every evening. I don't miss it now, though. It was just a habit - wine and a few nibbles before dinner.

dcontour · 10/11/2022 20:00

I don't drink anything at all.
I think it's a lot though. Most of my friends drink that much and think nothing of it. But it's a bit more than the recommended weekly amount so maybe try to cut back a bit.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/11/2022 20:02

Usually don't drink Mon to Friday unless I go to an event where I'll have 1-3 glasses.events are maybe once every 4 weeks.

Weekends I'll have 5-6 beers spaced through Fri to Sun. Usually 0-2 Friday night, couple after a sports class on Sat afternoon with mates and then a few Saturday evening too.

LoveShitJokes · 10/11/2022 20:02

I've been drinking FAR too much since covid, but I'm aiming now to drink what I've been drinking for most of my adulthood. Two bottles of prosecco on a Saturday night. No more, no less.

Habreathmint · 10/11/2022 20:02

I used to have up to 2 bottles of wine a day. Now it's about 2 a week and a few cocktails etc when I go out.

Can you tell me how you stopped?

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/11/2022 20:04

Although I do occasionally get absolutely bladdered on a night out. Maybe 4 times a year 😂

RewildingAmbridge · 10/11/2022 20:04

I'm basically the reverse, drank a lot when I was younger, out two or three times a week heavy drinking 17-22, by mid twenties out most weekends usually drinking, gigs , theatre, comedy, pub etc. Really into making cocktails etc. Late twenties early thirties all about the good wine, nice restaurants, theatre, cider festivals.
Had DS at 34 and now I barely drink even though he's 4 in bed and sleep by seven and I could. Went to a family evening party out out, a few weeks back DH was designated driver, I had one vodka tonic and went back to soft drinks. That's the only alcoholic drink I've had since DH and I went to the theatre in August and I had two glasses of wine. Just gone off it!

Prometheus · 10/11/2022 20:05

I drink 3 bottles of wine and a couple of beers per week. I don’t drink Mon-Wed. I never feel drunk - a bottle of wine will take me about 5 hours to drink alongside food on Fri-Sun evenings.

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 10/11/2022 20:06

None and I'm not an anomaly amongst my circle of friends.

BooksAndHooks · 10/11/2022 20:07

That is a lot.

I usually drink a bottle of wine a week and then occasionally a Jack Daniels or cider etc in the week.
