To ask how much you drink in a week?

I used to not drink at all but once I had my DD I started having half a glass of wine in the evening after I put her down. Over the years (she’s 10 now) that has increased. I’d now say that I drink at least two glasses of wine every night and at weekends an extra couple of beers / a cocktail. Is that a lot? What do you drink?

Teetotal for a year !!
i don’t miss alcohol at all I just think it’s a habit x

brightblueskies80 · 10/11/2022 19:20

One bottle of wine over 3-4 nights.

I drink 3 days a week...probably 2-3 bottles of wine in total. I'm in my 60s, and fit.

Do you drink 2-3 bottles in each sitting?
What do you do to mitigate the alcohol if anything?

I worry about my drinking but I love wine!

I wonder if it matters over how long you drink a bottle? I can put away a bottle and a half over 6 hours and do that 3-4 times a week.

I know it's too much. It's just so easy to do.

Royalbloo · 10/11/2022 19:21

Loads of people I know sit there every evening eating crap and harping on about how they don’t drink but I would rather have a wine every now and then than be obese.

THIS WILL BE UNPOPULAR….awaiting incoming…

itssquidstella · 10/11/2022 19:21

I don't think a couple of glasses of wine in one go is a lot, but I do think drinking every day is probably an issue. You're supposed to have at least two consecutive days off drinking each week; I only tend to drink at the weekends anyway so no more than three times a week.

Disneyblueeyes · 10/11/2022 19:23

It's not too bad OP. It's not an alarming amount anyway.
I'm not saying it's great either, but it's no worse than having a few biscuits with your cup of tea every night. It's a bad habit like any other.

I am absolutely ASTOUNDED at people with opened and unfinished bottles of wine in the house. I mean. I don't know anyone who does that.

Ikr! I couldn't waste wine. The bottle always gets finished.

Sloth66 · 10/11/2022 19:26

3-4 units at the weekend, white wine

Tomorrowisalatterday · 10/11/2022 19:27

I have switched to gin and tonic which really helps me be more mindful - I measure it so I know exactly how much I am having and I have to make a proper decision to have a second, no topping up etc

Turmerictolly · 10/11/2022 19:28

It's become a habit. If you want to, try to have 2-3 alcohol free days. I love wine but as I've got older I can't drink the same amount I used to without feeling crap the next day and it affects my sleep and mood. I've cut down to the government recommended limits and have one of those stoppers on the bottle that measures out 125mls a glass. I like nice wine too and that was costing £12-15 a bottle - I was spending too much, so there's been a big saving too.

It also took a health scare for me to reassess my drinking limits.

CoalCraft · 10/11/2022 19:29

Nothing at all

This is partly why I think I can get away with drinking. I eat a very healthy diet and take quite a few specific vitamins including N-acetylcysteine

Swishswish26 · 10/11/2022 19:32

I think if you enjoy it and it’s not something that you have come to rely on then it sounds ok. Also depends on how large the glasses of wine are. I got into a habit of having a couple of glasses of wine virtually every night over the summer, it was lovely sitting in the garden relaxing with wine. I have however recently started having alcohol free nights Mon-Thurs then maybe half a bottle on a Fri, same on a Saturday and maybe a glass of wine with dinner on Sunday. I am fit and active, do at least 10 000 steps a day and go the gym etc. but cutting out some of the wine will hopefully help me lose a couple of extra pounds before Christmas! Maybe try cutting it out for a day or two and see how you feel.

MadOnHer · 10/11/2022 19:34

A couple of glasses of wine on a Friday night crept up to every night crept up to a bottle of wine most nights…and before I knew what had happened I was a heavy daily drinker. The process took about 15 years. Was very scary in the end. Absolutely never imagined I’d end up an alcoholic.

Been tee total for several years now and don’t miss it at all. Life is so much more fun and more manageable without relying on wine to enjoy myself or relax.

When the kids were little me and Dh git into the habit of drink and eat crap! I'd have a vodka and lemonade and we would share a big bar of chocolate. We did that for months. O didnt get fat because I worked out every say but I knew it wasnt doing us any favours. We stopped but it felt strange at first because it had become such a habit. It took about two weeks not to miss a drink and chocolate.

housemaus · 10/11/2022 19:36

I don't drink in the average week, it always surprises me that people do.

I'm not a pious non-drinker by any means, I can drink a fair amount when I do go out! But I've never understood the idea of drinking regularly each week or knowing you'll have X amount an evening.

If I'm going for a drink with friends or a meal or out-out, I drink, but not just for the sake of it at home.

(I don't think mine is more healthy - I drink to be drunk or drunkish and while I like particular drinks for the taste as well as the alcohol content, I'm not choosing them of an evening because I don't see the point unless I want a buzz. Maybe those who just have a glass of wine an evening actually have a healthier attitude towards it for that reason!)

Lil50 · 10/11/2022 19:37

Many cups of tea a day. Alcohol never

BellePeppa · 10/11/2022 19:39

I hardly ever drink, I just never think about it really (as in I rarely actively fancy a drink). I probably drink about 5 units a year.

Lovemusic33 · 10/11/2022 19:39

I don’t really drink anything. I have the occasional can of cider if I have a friend over.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/11/2022 19:40

I probably drink 3 bottles of wine a week, but I don’t drink in the week, only weekends.
I feel it’s too much for me, as in I feel tired on Mondays, feel sluggish etc. At least once or twice a year I will do a full 30 days off alcohol and I always feel much better. I did January and 6 weeks from august to September this year, so I know I can go without, but I do enjoy a glass of wine!

Ridingthegravytrain · 10/11/2022 19:40

I drink 3 days a week. About 2 bottles of wine and a couple of gins over those days. I would happily drink every day which worries me so I'm pretty strict with myself

It's probably too much anyway but life's too short and I'm so healthy with food it's one of my few pleasures

Doorpalms · 10/11/2022 19:40

A bottle of wine most nights of the week. I don't think it’s that odd, lots drink most nights

MuchTooTired · 10/11/2022 18:39

I don’t drink anything on an average week. I’m a binge drinker so get absolutely wasted once or twice a year which is terrible, I really should grow up!

That’s me! I don’t drink regularly but when I do I get rat arsed. It’s probably once a year though.

GiantWotsit · 10/11/2022 19:41

Up until the summer this year I was drinking 4 and sometimes 5 bottles a week. I knew for a long time something had to give. Since then on average I'd say I drink a large glass a week, spread out over a couple of days.
