To ask how much you drink in a week?

I used to not drink at all but once I had my DD I started having half a glass of wine in the evening after I put her down. Over the years (she’s 10 now) that has increased. I’d now say that I drink at least two glasses of wine every night and at weekends an extra couple of beers / a cocktail. Is that a lot? What do you drink?

I am so much better than I was!

Lockdown - cringe!! Drank so much!

I'd say now I have one drink on Friday and one or 2 on Saturday. Usually a tin of IPA so it lasts longer than a wine. Delicious weekend treat.

I defo need to keep an eye on my drinking because I know full well it could become a big problem for me.

ivfbabymomma1 · 11/11/2022 09:18

2 bottles of wine over (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) and the nothing Monday - Thursday

paintitallover · 11/11/2022 09:19

I used to drink half a bottle of wine around 5 nights a week, but now I drink 1-2 glasses a week, unless something special is on, like a holiday.

I think drinking can become habitual. If you don't do it for 3 weeks, you lose the will to, if you'd like to stop. It's worth a try if you'd like to cut down. I used to worry I wouldn't be able to, but I did.

bonzaitree · 11/11/2022 09:19

I'm proud of myself for how I've changed now I think about it

I used to never be able to have just one. Now I'm more than happy with that.

Sarah2891 · 11/11/2022 09:24

Hardly ever. I don't like alcohol

Oblomov22 · 11/11/2022 09:28

I can drink a bottle of wine easily on my own. I try not to drink during the week.

PinotPony · 11/11/2022 09:28

I'd recommend you read The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober. It drastically changed my attitude to alcohol.

Some people can drink in moderation. If you can't and recognise that, then you need to try to stop.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 11/11/2022 09:29

Usually a glass of wine on a Friday or Saturday night or a bottle of beer. I don't keep alcohol in the house or I would be very tempted to have a drink on other nights of the week.
I'm not a big drinker, but I would be a habitual drinker if I wasn't strict with myself.

Oblomov22 · 11/11/2022 09:29

But I do love a baileys, a G&T, or a cocktail.
Dh and I have a drink sometimes when watching football.

RosetteNebula · 11/11/2022 09:32

None now. I was drinking about 60 units a week (I know). I can't moderate and find it easier to have none than a little.

"Sober on a Drunk Planet" and "This Naked Mind" were also very good.

SherbetDips · 11/11/2022 09:49

A gin and tonic or a beer 🍺 but not every night.

littlepeas · 11/11/2022 09:55

I only drink beer and usually only on Friday and Saturday - typically 3 or 4 bottles over the course of an evening. When on holiday or over the Christmas period we do drink most evenings and probably around the same amount. It's very rare I have any more than the above in one sitting though - I hate being drunk.

My DH drinks a bottle of wine a night. Watching him drink it, knowing the health and financial implications, puts me off it.

Health issues absolutely but the cost would annoy me too.

Does anyone know how many units a large wine is? I never know if I have recommended weekly amount as just don't get the 'units' calculation.

You see, the govt tried to make things simple and they ended up making it too simple to be any use.

A unit is 10ml of pure alcohol but they don’t tell you that, they just give you woffle about “a large glass of wine” or “a pint of standard lager”.

It's not helpful to say something like “a bottle of wine is 9 units” because wine varies so much in strength. Light white wine might only be 10% whereas one of those big Australian reds can be 16%.

It’s actually quite easy to calculate units, all you need to do is multiply the amount you’re drinking by the strength of it.

Suppose you drink a litre of Yellow Tail Shiraz, which is 13.5% (not recommended but it makes the sums simpler). 13.5% of the litre (1000ml) is alcohol so you've had 135ml of alcohol. Divide by 10 (as a unit is 10ml) and you’ve had 13.5 units. Ooof! I said it wasn't recommended.

If you’re more sensible and drink 175ml of it, that's
0.175 x 13.5 = 2.36 units
A bottle: 0.75 x 13.5 = 10.125 units

Tesco Finest Riesling is only 11.5% so that’s
0.175 x 11.5 = 2 units a glass
(or 8.6 units a bottle).

Why not entertain your friends in the pub by giving them a running total of how many units they're on!

This is a really helpful post

To be fair the op did ask, but when it comes from a position where you think you're drinking too much it's not that helpful to have all the posts saying I drink once every three months or just when I'm I get offered baileys at Xmas etc. it seems a bit smug. Maybe have a little think before posting.

That’s kind of you. I did in fact read the first few responses and hide under duvet hating myself and wondering why I’d asked!!! But it seems I’m not alone in being concerned with how much I drink which helps!

That's ridiculous.

Nothing smug about the fact some people rarely drink alcohol.

If OP expected everyone on the thread to confirm her drinking is normal for 99% of pp's then she asked in the wrong place.

OP your drinking is excessive IMO and like all indulgence you eventually need more and more to feel goo unless you reduce your intake.

warofthemonstertrucks · 11/11/2022 11:44

Until a few months ago I was having three big glasses of wine every other weeknight and a lot more than that on an average weekend.
I noticed I was getting fat and looking old so I've cut out the weeknight drinking and cut down to drinking alot to every other weekend (if the fancy takes me-it's not a planned sesh every two weeks).
I can get by without drinking but equally I really enjoy it. The main reason I moderate is vanity tbh, but I am also obvs aware of the health benefits.

momlette · 11/11/2022 13:19

I think there’s a culture of denial around alcohol in UK . The fun relaxing feeling associated with it is almost entirely divorced in peoples’ minds from the very real health risks of liver failure, stroke and many cancers. The effects of drinking a bottle of wine a night will catch up with most people after 10-20 years. I drink now and again but on a practical level I don’t know how you function every day, you must wake up feeling awful and the effect on skin etc . I don’t think it’s smug to say you don’t drink. Also people can certainly live their lives how they wish but the selfish part is when you need to use health care due to effects of drinking

xogossipgirlxo · 11/11/2022 13:34

Your drinking seems like a lot of units. Probably does not do much good to your health.

To answer the question. I drink only one weekend a month, and it's 2 glasses of red wine, so it's one bottle of wine between me and DH a month. I used to drink more, like glass or two every week, but I decided to reduce the amount of alcohol in my life massively.

FindingMeno · 11/11/2022 13:35

O units most weeks.
Maybe 2 units rarely.

Hey, no one is trying to shame you. You asked, and people answered. Maybe if you said you're struggling or you'd like to reduce/quit, people would be more compassionate? I definitely didn't mean anything wrong in my reply. I used to love prosecco, wine, whiskey (I still do), and not that long ago I had 4 beers in a pub and puked at home, but then I got some kind of anger in myself towards drinking culture when I realised how we allow children to grow up thinking that being sober is weird. We need alcohol to celebrate every mundane thing etc., and I decided to drink much, much less. I still drink, I love red wine, but it's my kind of manifesto 😂

anneofgreengablz · 12/11/2022 20:15

20 years ago I realised that the ½ bottle I was drinking each night added up to a lot of units, so I cut down to 4 nights a week. I do miss drinking wine every night as it's so lovely, but 3 nights off isn't exactly a hardship. I'm shocked by they way others on this thread drink - either nothing or binge drinking... both of those sound miserable to me.

Why do you think not drinking is miserable?
