Arguing with sister in law over DS age

Janedoe95 · 07/09/2022 17:04

Please do correct me if I’m wrong -

my DS is 6 months born on the 10th

I work out his age by weeks at the moment so 24 weeks = 6 months

but she says he’s not 6 months as it’s not the 10th yet?

am I the only one who calculates age like this? It aligns with his vaccinations and nurses haven’t said I’m wrong.

obviously I understand when he’s older every year on the 10th will be his birthday but from what I understand it’s calculated weekly as babies can change so much and grow so fast

I did weeks until about 6 months. Then monthly.

MzHz · 07/09/2022 17:07

Honestly, it doesn’t matter past the first few weeks.

if you want to call him 6m old because you’re not pretentious, then that’s fine. The whole weeks thing used to annoy me even when my hulking great teen was teeny.

this isn’t worth having words about. Let her crack on. It’s what you want and what the nurses suggest

DreamingofItaly2023 · 07/09/2022 17:07

Surely 6 month is 26 weeks or is my maths totally off? 52/2 = 26

MeridasMum · 07/09/2022 17:07

24 weeks and 6 months are different lengths of time. Close but not the same.
He is not 6 months old until 10th of the month

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/09/2022 17:07

You can't just claim 24 weeks is 6 months. It isn't. 26 weeks is 6 months. That will fall on the 10th.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 07/09/2022 17:09

A month is not 4 weeks, except for February.

6 months is 26 weeks. At 24 weeks your child is 5 months old.

Ship · 07/09/2022 17:09

He’ll be 6 months when 6 months have passed since his birthday. So the 10th of this month. 24 weeks isn’t 6 months, it’s just short. It doesn’t really matter mind

wast542 · 07/09/2022 17:09

He isn't 6 months though. He's 6m on the 10th. There is no other way to work it out.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/09/2022 17:09

Months aren't 4 weeks exactly so 24 weeks doesn't equal 6m. 26w is 6m as there are 52w in a year.

However this is really not something I think is worth you two actually debating. Seriously.

LIZS · 07/09/2022 17:09

10th is six months.

KrisAkabusi · 07/09/2022 17:10

February is the only month where one month= 4 weeks. So your basic assumption is wrong, you're underestimating.

lemongirl1985 · 07/09/2022 17:10

He will be exactly 6 months old on the 10th.

My mum does the same when one day after my let's say 30th birthday says oh now you're 31. No I'm not!!

This.

Not every month has the same number of days.
Only one month has four exact weeks on it and that’s only once every four years.

He will be 6 months old, six months after he was born, on the 10th.

Castaspell · 07/09/2022 17:13

Week age and month age don't always line up due to different length months.

Either way 24 weeks is not 6 months. 26 weeks is half a year (52 weeks) so the closest to 6 months. But to me he is 6 months on whatever date of the month he was born.

Ponderingwindow · 07/09/2022 17:14

6 months is when the day of birth passes in the month. You don’t just shorten the months to 28 days. Months on average are 30.4 days long.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 07/09/2022 17:15

What they all said ^^

QueenLagertha · 07/09/2022 17:16

SIL is correct. Similarly you weee pregnant for 9 months which is 40 weeks, not 36

Hellocatshome · 07/09/2022 17:16

It doesn't matter. Not one bit.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 07/09/2022 17:16

With your method he will turn 1 after 48 weeks so a month early. 😂

MXThelp · 07/09/2022 17:17

By your reckoning he will be 12 months old at 48 weeks. How old will he be on his first birthday? 13 months?

Hellocatshome · 07/09/2022 17:17

But also this.

itsgettingweird · 07/09/2022 17:17

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering how 4 weeks equated a month!

I always did a month from the date they were born for my ds.

Gamerlady · 07/09/2022 17:17

You're wrong he will be 6 months on the 10th .. otherwise he'll be 1 before his birthday

Agree with this. Weeks are helpful to start with but after the 6 month point most people would switch to just counting months. A bit like you move from using months to years as they get older. I once had someone tell me their DS was "30 months" when I asked how old he was. I mean, it's technically correct but saying "he's 2 and a half" would surely have been simpler and less confusing!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/09/2022 17:17

If every month had 4 weeks, you'd be working out that he's a year old at 48 weeks - a whole 4 weeks short. I know you're not doing that, but it would work out that way using your method. 6 months is half a year - not 6*4 weeks. He's not 6 months till the 10th. Absolutely fine to say he's X weeks - but I'd say he's not 6 months yet.
