Arguing with sister in law over DS age

Janedoe95 · 07/09/2022 17:04

Please do correct me if I’m wrong -

my DS is 6 months born on the 10th

I work out his age by weeks at the moment so 24 weeks = 6 months

but she says he’s not 6 months as it’s not the 10th yet?

am I the only one who calculates age like this? It aligns with his vaccinations and nurses haven’t said I’m wrong.

obviously I understand when he’s older every year on the 10th will be his birthday but from what I understand it’s calculated weekly as babies can change so much and grow so fast

Surely 6 month is 26 weeks or is my maths totally off? 52/2 = 26

Not all months have the same number of days in them, and a year is not exactly 52 weeks.

Stillcaring · 08/09/2022 19:28

Hun, whatever floats your boat. 52 Weeks a year, 12 months, in other words 13 weeks in 3 months or 26 weeks in 6 months. But why get upset over something like this. Age is just a number 😘

Mollymoostoo · 08/09/2022 19:34

Oh my days. There are bigger problems than this.

EatAllDay · 08/09/2022 20:08

24 weeks is not 6 months. Just isn’t.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 08/09/2022 20:34

24 weeks is not 6 months. 6 months is 26 weeks. Or will you say your child is 1 almost a month before their birthday? By your calculation there are 13 months in a year

RavenhairedRachel · 08/09/2022 21:39

4 weeks is a calender month and at the end of the day does it really matter in the grand scheme of things

alwaysdarkestbeforedawn · 08/09/2022 21:40

My goodness this thread!! Pages and pages of people saying exactly the same thing! I think OP gets it now. 🤦‍♀️

A year is 52 weeks, this half a year (6 months) is 26 weeks not 24.

If I calculated my daughters 6 month birthday by weeks I’d be counting 26 weeks this her 6 month mark would be 2 days before her birth date (I.e 8th instead of 10th) and if anyone asked me on the 7th I’d be saying 6 months because that is just the next closest milestone!

But what about your weeks and your months? Eh? Eh?

Canthave2manycats · 09/09/2022 01:31

OMG what does it matter??! When he's 4, he will be 4. When he is 18 he will be doing A levels and going out on the piss!! As the mother of three adult children, I am seriously struggling to see how this matters??!

EarringsandLipstick · 09/09/2022 02:07

a year is not exactly 52 weeks.

A year is exactly 52 weeks. Just like a year is exactly 12 months.

I am not piling on you OP but it's amazing you didn't realise that a month doesn't have 4 weeks! And that 24 weeks is not 6 months. I don't think SIL was being snide in her remarks.

mrssunshinexxx · 09/09/2022 02:18

He will be 6 months on the 10th

SPR1107 · 09/09/2022 03:30

I work in housing and we have so many people in rent arrears for working out months like this.

If you work out months by doing 6 x 4, by the end of the year you’ll have four weeks that are redundant. 4 x 12 = 48, but there are 52 weeks in the year.

Your baby is 24 weeks, not 6 months. They’ll be 6 months on the 10th.

Weeks can make a huge difference in terms of milestones as well, so I would continue counting by weeks if that’s what you prefer but the month only changes on the 10th

Lulu49 · 09/09/2022 07:56

I think you need to get out more

Maray1967 · 09/09/2022 08:02

She is correct - but petty to raise it. 6 months is 26 weeks as pp have said.
Some employers do pay every four weeks and some benefits are paid like that eg. Child benefit but most months are 30 or 31 months so you have to add on 2 or 3 days to every month so it builds up over the months.
I can’t imagine pointing out to a friend or family member that they calculated their child’s age incorrectly. She must have plenty of time on her hands.

Oh my days. There are bigger problems than this.

I can’t believe this post. Just shows how bored I am that I’m even messaging. When I have my birthdays they are celebrated on the day and month I was born. So under a year the monthly anniversary falls on the date not number of weeks.

FarFromHome2 · 09/09/2022 08:52

RavenhairedRachel · 08/09/2022 21:39

No, it really isn’t, unless that month goes over the end of February in a non-leap-year.

CocoPlum · 09/09/2022 12:09

So by your reckoning, a 40 week pregnancy would be 10 months??

He's 24 weeks, 6 months on 10th.

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 09/09/2022 18:07

If you said he was 6 months and he was actually 4 months then SIL has a point but for the sake of a couple of days SIL is being petty 😩

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 09/09/2022 18:08

@CocoPlum
Many people do consider pregnancy to be 10 months 🤦‍♀️

CocoPlum · 09/09/2022 18:27

...
Famously a 9 month event 😆

How? 40 weeks is really 38 from ovulation, 36 from when you usually find out

RealityTV · 10/09/2022 10:39

@Janedoe95, LMAO! Reading these comment is hilarious! How do so many people not understand the weeks and months thing!

These are fixed values -
52 weeks = 12 months = 1 year
52 weeks / 2 = 26 weeks
26 weeks = half a year = 12 months / 2

However, a MONTH is NOT a fixed value -
1 month = 28 days, 29 days, 30 days or 31 days

This means that if your child was born on March 10th, 2022, your child is technically

26 weeks and 2 days OR
a little over 6 months old on September 10th!
This also means that on September 9th, he was 26 weeks and 1 day old, but STILL 6 MONTHS!

Tell your sister to count the WEEKS starting from March 10th to September 10th and she will see that on September 10th, your son was 6 months old and 2 days!

You're welcome! 🥰

Honeybea62 · 10/09/2022 19:25

Who does this? Saying 6 months is easier than typing 5 1/2 but who cares. Your sil is a petty witch to post what she did. Sounds like she has an issue with you. Jealous maybe? Ignore her.
