Arguing with sister in law over DS age

Janedoe95 · 07/09/2022 17:04

Please do correct me if I’m wrong -

my DS is 6 months born on the 10th

I work out his age by weeks at the moment so 24 weeks = 6 months

but she says he’s not 6 months as it’s not the 10th yet?

am I the only one who calculates age like this? It aligns with his vaccinations and nurses haven’t said I’m wrong.

obviously I understand when he’s older every year on the 10th will be his birthday but from what I understand it’s calculated weekly as babies can change so much and grow so fast

Weeks and months are different measurements of time and can’t be 100% converted because a month isn’t a set amount of days or weeks.

I agree that 6 months is on the 10th of the 6 months.

Weeks are weeks, 26 weeks is half a year but not officially 6 months.

Madmax1992 · 07/09/2022 20:24

I count 6 months as 26 weeks, c

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 07/09/2022 20:25

He is 'about' six months until the 10th which is six months since he was born.

24 weeks is 'about' six months and not exactly six months because there is not exactly 4 weeks per month.

I don't know why you are finding this difficult to understand? Did you count yourself pregnant for ten months because midwives count it as 40 weeks?!

BeardieWeirdie · 07/09/2022 20:16

I had this conversation with a highly educated friend. She kept asking why I hadn’t started BLW when my baby was, according to her, 6 months old. I said that she was 24 weeks and had another 2 weeks to go, but she was adamant that 24 weeks is 6 months. It’s bloody not!!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one!

haha it’s so obvious now it’s been pointed out I don’t know why I rounded the months to 4 weeks

I promise I did complete education and did quite well to 😅

Sorry OP, I am too tired to read much of this post atm. @Janedoe95 you are talking about lunar months, and your sister-in-law is talking about the -Gregorian - calendar months. Unfortunately (but probably necessarily) both readings of the calendar can be officially correct. My PiP payment and my husband's state pensions are both paid according to the lunar calendar (every 28 days), but my husband's work pension is paid according to the Gregorian calendar. Our bank DD's to the utilities etc go out according to the Gregorian calendar.

It is a long time since I had my babies, but I expect that PP's on page one are correct when they say that you need to go from the 10th to the 10th, otherwise by the time of your DC's first Birthday they will have had too many weeks in their year! I would be surprised if the NHS looks at that differently, but as I said, I don't actually know, and both calendar types can and are, used officially.

BertieBotts · 07/09/2022 20:38

I'm just impressed you manage to keep track of weeks! I would completely lose track. Only really did weeks until about 2-3 months, then I would just go calendar months because you can count them. Although you're right that they do use weeks for jabs and weaning, so probably I used weeks until weaning and then switched to months.

And once they turn 2, only in years (and half years if you want to be really specific). It comes across as wanky to say "This is my 27 month old"

Thank you! It’s so nice to have an explanation I’m not sure why I’ve always thought of a month as 4 weeks.

at least now I’ll make up a small white lie to my sister in law and say I’m measuring in lunar months until 6 months then after following Gregorian after then so I seem a little bit less silly 😂

To answer your question we weren’t I just posted a photo online just saying “6 months” and she messaged DH saying why have I posted that I’m wrong.

but oh well I’m wrong no big deal

That was very petty and unnecessary of her tbf

That doesn't make it any better....

ArabellaDrummond · 07/09/2022 20:47

Your SIL is correct

MsChatterbox · 07/09/2022 20:53

Your SIL is both correct and petty to message your DH about this. Also, I've had to explain this to someone else before so it's not just you and you won't be the last either.

MsChatterbox · 07/09/2022 20:54

6 months (or 24 weeks lol) postpartum is definitely still in the baby brain zone. So I would just blame it on that to your SIL

CaptainMum · 07/09/2022 20:55

It's okay to measure a baby's age by months after the first 4/6 weeks. It's a headache for most people to translate weeks to months. Just say 5 months, then move to 'nearly 6 months' when he is.

Mountainhike · 07/09/2022 21:00

Hellocatshome · 07/09/2022 17:16

It doesn't matter. Not one bit.

This

my mil overheard me having a conversation with someone. The person asked how old my baby was so I told them 6 months. Mil came over and corrected me saying he’s not 6 months yet. I was a few days out Apparently and baby won’t be that age till Saturday. Honestly, what does a few days matter in the grand scheme of things. Certainly not worth correcting someone.

Snowiscold · 07/09/2022 21:42

As an aside, while negotiating a redundancy payout, part of the money was based on my three-months’ notice, as per my contract. HR offered me 12 weeks’ money. I had to point out that 12 weeks and three months weren’t the same thing and they had to offer me more money.

I think that is a great idea @Janedoe95

I am sure you agree OP that in the scheme of things it doesn't really matter who is right or wrong, BUT your sister-in-law is obviously one of "those" people, and although I am well know in my family for my honesty

(I am not allowed to forget the time I got on a train at a 'halt' where they didn't sell tickets, you were supposed to buy one from the train host when they came around on the train. But my journey was quite a short one and the ticket seller had not been around by the time I got off the train at a 'proper' station, so I went to the ticket office there and paid them for my ticket. On a different occasion I couldn't find anyone to pay for my ticket, so I gave the same amount to a charity..)

I would tell her quite a whopper if it got her to stop trying to show me, or anyone else, up - but of course it would have to be a lie that couldn't be disproved 🤭
Actually if your s-i-l does that sort of thing quite frequently, I am sure that others must have noticed too, and it will be your s-i-l who will be found wanting, not you!

Mumspair1 · 07/09/2022 18:25

I know.

And yet, here you are!

Bard6817 · 08/09/2022 18:04

Under your rationale at 48 weeks they will be 1….

But that degree of accuracy, It’s not worth arguing over and i think only the person who cares is probably your DS. My birthday is at the end of july, and i think of myself as a year older when i’m within 3 months of my birthday.

exaltedwombat · 08/09/2022 18:07

He's 24 weeks old. Months are not exactly 4 weeks.

How old will he be after 48 weeks? Not a year!

But WTF. Celebrate his 6 months half-birthday twice!

LovelyIssues · 08/09/2022 18:15

Get a hobby guys

Ki44 · 08/09/2022 18:25

Anything past 12 weeks just gets stupid.

I stopped using weeks when we got to 10 weeks. I was saying, 6 weeks old, then 8 weeks old and somewhere between 9-11 weeks, it became - almost 3 months old.

Mariposista · 08/09/2022 18:55

This is such a pathetic thing to be arguing about

hewouldwouldnthe · 08/09/2022 19:12

After the first few weeks, you simply do calendar months. After 12 weeks you just do the months. Never heard anyone call a 6 month old a 24 week old baby.

Bleachmycloths · 08/09/2022 19:20

He will be 6 months on the 10th. Just like birthdays. Your next birthday will be the x day of x month and you will be x years old.

Isahlo · 08/09/2022 19:22

DreamingofItaly2023 · 07/09/2022 17:07

Surely 6 month is 26 weeks or is my maths totally off? 52/2 = 26

Yes this
