Scrunch bum leggings while teaching children.

There's a discussion going on about this at an Australian parenting site and I'm surprised at some of the comments tbh. I was wondering what MN thinks.

www.everybump.com.au/community/topic/7784-scrunch-butt-leggings-when-teaching-children/

I don't think that they're inappropriate at all and recoil at the idea of policing what women (especially young women) wear.

YABU: it's not appropriate for an educational setting.

YANBU: it's not a problem

OMG my eyes!!! I really regret searching google for men in scrunch bum leggings. If guys start wearing them maybe the whole fashion will die out much much faster 😖

I think that most women who are comfortable enough to wear them realise that they will attract the male gaze. I know I was trying my hardest to in my early twenties.

That's not to say that unwanted attention is ok, but I don't think we can ban people staring at each other.

Another thread on the site from the OP describes a nightclub attempting to enforce a staring without consent ban. I'm pretty sure that can't work, good intentions aside.

I tend to agree, and I think that you are right, lots of women at that age are trying to do that.

But if that's true, it kind of makes it clear why it's not really the thing in a professional setting. And it seems disingenuous to claim that it's not sexualizing while you are trying to attract the male gaze. Similarly this idea that men and especially boys are the ones doing the sexualizing.

It seems like there are a bunch of claims that don't fit together.

It does make it clear that they are not just a variation on normal leggings.

100% this. I find myself conflicted and making excuses for them all at the same time. Social conditioning vs my own reasoning perhaps?

At my school, we all seem to wear Boden or White Stuff pocket dresses! 😂
It's about comfort, but also appearing professional imo.

Glad you can afford those. I think Next is the order of the day at ours 😍

I buy Boden off Ebay. Bargains to be had.

This thread has ruined me. Now I'm seeing scrunch-bums everywhere I go!!

lowgreyclouds · 01/11/2022 08:00

I don't know why but I bought a pair of scrunch leggings last weekend.

My husband says they look great, my arse crack says otherwise. They're way too uncomfortable IMO.

Forget about scrunch-bum ... how about no-bum leggings?

Leggings without a dress over them are unsuitable for street wear. The scrunchbutt legging are completely inappropriate. My tights are less explicit, but I wear a slip and dress over them. For gym and exercise lessons in schools, long loose shorts or gym tunics are good choices. Teachers are overburdened, excessively micromanaged, and abused at the chalkface. Expecting professional dress standards is not unreasonable, as chikdren are impressionable.

scrunch butt leggings are not appropriate for school. Astounding anyone would think they are.

I don’t think the style of leggings matters, but I don’t think bum hugging leggings when your arse isn’t covered by a tunic or dress is appropriate for work or school, whether worn by men or women. I don’t think seeing every curve of a person’s bum is what you need in a work setting.

This! The teachers at the primary school I am at all wear them. Not nude ones though but still...Is it necessary?

These have got to be a joke. Who would wear them? I'd be fascinated to hear their reasons for doing so, because I can't think of any I'd every want to admit to!!😂

But I really do think the clothing industry (for women) sometimes IS having a laugh and seeing how gullible and ridiculous people can be. You can imagine the designer showing the drawing and sniggering and laying a bet on whether people will actually buy it.

Once such example is sleeveless trench-coats, which I first saw about 15 years ago in a fashion article. But people wear them - I think Meghan had something which was a cross between a dress and a trench-coat with no sleeves.

Kpo58 · 24/06/2023 19:27

They are definitely not appropriate for school/work attire. You might as well go the whole hog and just wear bikini bottoms and nothing else.

If men were to wear something this tight, it would be seen as obscene.

I saw a guy wearing these last week at my gym. Fit, toned and instant ick.

I don't know what he was thinking.

Fuckingfuming1 · 20/09/2023 14:04

I actually worked as a director of a childcare setting in Australia, and there was absolutely no chance of leggings being worn by the educators. I had a specific uniform policy and shorts had to be a certain length, no skirts.
Mainly for the comfort of the staff.

Conkersinautumn · 20/09/2023 14:08

Leggings aren't ideal in an educational setting. Maybe under dress/ tunic tops. But leggings still don't look anything more than tights! I know it's the whole "leisure" look but they seem to be more for people who want to be thought of as exercising. School (unless it's dance school) surely teachers shouldn't normalise what kids can't wear for their uniforms!

Dolores87 · 20/09/2023 15:47

I would only wear scrunch butt leggings if I was trying to entice my partner tbh so I think they are a weird choice of clothing to wear working in a school.

That said I wouldn't ban them.

Scrunchedbum · 21/09/2023 12:55

I love that this thread is still being posted in! I’m the OP of the original Australian thread that this thread is about. Bloody scrunch bum leggings. I still think that they’re ugly and completely inappropriate around children that are in an educational/therapeutic setting.
