Scrunch bum leggings while teaching children.

There's a discussion going on about this at an Australian parenting site and I'm surprised at some of the comments tbh. I was wondering what MN thinks.

www.everybump.com.au/community/topic/7784-scrunch-butt-leggings-when-teaching-children/

I don't think that they're inappropriate at all and recoil at the idea of policing what women (especially young women) wear.

YABU: it's not appropriate for an educational setting.

YANBU: it's not a problem

I drove past a woman walking along wearing these in beige.

For one horrible moment I thought she was naked from the waist down, like that awful nightmare when you go into work, look down and realise you've forgotten to put your knickers and trousers on and wake up in a cold sweat relieved it was just a dream.

I've seen quite a few people wearing skin tone clothes and some wear them really close to their natural skin tone and very tight/short so you don't know if they're if they're wearing underwear or not!

Ditto crop tops/skin tin tops and cycling shorts in various pastel shades but they're just vile showing my age. Disclaimer: I was 20/21 in early 90s and cycling shorts were in fashion and I did wear them - black or baby pink Benetton ones! Grin We didn't know a huge amount about VPL's then either or fake tan!

My arse is getting itchy just looking at the bloody things.

A young year 6 teacher at my school wears them on PE days.

The boys in her class love PE days.

What a sad pathetic and creepy kind of women she must be if she wears those to teach 11year olds, but i suppose it is all about her feeling good about herself.

Might add that while people can wear what they like, I do wish people with colossal wobbly arses who like wearing skin tight tights/leggings, would at least wear longer tops to cover them in the street, not waist length jobs that inflict every ripple and wobble on innocent passers-by.

Many people say you shouldn’t wear leggings if you have no ass or if your legs are too skinny.

How about instead of having a minimum and maximum size limit on what women are allowed to wear. Everyone should act much less judgemental (and in your case jealous) and to allow women to wear whatever they want.

I hadn't worn leggings since they were first in fashion - early 90s? Black ones.

Approx 12 years ago I worked with someone who wore white leggings to work with a dress over them (she was slim, I'm a size 12) and she encouraged me to borrow them when I stayed over at her house one day. Not a good look even with a dress over them! She also encouraged me to buy black leggings which I did/do wear. You have to be really careful with dresses, that they don't get hoiked up so you get a flash of knicker area combined with black/white leggings!

donkeydonk · 25/08/2022 09:22

Wow never heard of these. Be a bit like getting your pants stuck up your bum I'd imagine. Who on earth wants that all day.

This is bizarre. Everyone has a butt, so what’s the issue with form fitting trousers? It’s like policing women with larger chests from wearing jumpers. I don’t get it at all. If children are objectifying their teachers, then that’s the issue not the clothing.

No it isn’t?
wearing very low revealing tops wouldn’t be appropriate yet all women have boobs.
A jumper is similar to joggers. Not clingfilm tight leggins that show every nook and cranny.

InsomniacVampire · 25/08/2022 09:24

I would not wear them (Im a teacher). I mean, you know kids will look on you, and it's not an image I would like to present at school. Outside school hours, why not, teachers are just human beings too.

PeriodBro · 25/08/2022 09:25

Anyone who's worked in a school - particularly a secondary - and is female understands that its really important to maintaint very clear and strict boundaries with pupils.

But if this is a PE teacher it's a bit different.

Not at all like wearing a jumper though is it? More like a low-cut top or nipple tassels. These leggings are just not appropriate when working with children.
And then accusing the children of being at fault for objectifying their teachers? Really?

Leftbutcameback · 25/08/2022 09:25

As far as I can tell original post (Aussie one) doesn't say it's in a school (just school age kids) and it's not a teacher, just an older student from uni they've been paired with. It could be athletics training etc and then some wear very small right shorts / running pants. It's not like standing at the front of the room writing on the white board!

tkwal · 25/08/2022 09:26

I blame the Kardashians although I never thought women would want "yes" to be the answer to "does my bum look big in this?"
However if you're confident enough to wear what you find comfortable then I don't think it's reasonable for others to dictate . IMO they are functional in the same way sports bras are

Leftbutcameback · 25/08/2022 09:27

Also is scrunch bum the proper term for them? You learn something new every day!

Fritilleries · 25/08/2022 08:56

I don't like them. They're designed to deliberately enhance your bum. Children don't need to see your bum as a sexualised body feature. Much the same as cleavage, which is the same. It is simply not professional or appropriate within a setting that demands a clear and distinct boundary between adults and children.

^^This. But I'm completely OK with the concept of "policing" sexualised clothing in the workplace. There's a time and place.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 25/08/2022 09:33

Absolutely not, and I am not a prude. Whats next, camel toe leggings? What about some nice male ball enhancing leggings?

If a teenager isnt allowed to wear them then neither should the teacher.

6th formers at our school do wear them! Teachers wouldn't be allowed.

MooFroo · 25/08/2022 09:48

No need, they’re a stupid fashion trend and inappropriate for teaching kids
should be some dress/uniform standards in place

Dotjones · 25/08/2022 09:53

The weirdest ones are those faux-transparent ones. As in, they're opaque, but designed to look like people can see your skin underneath. I don't get the rationale for these, "I don't want to show off my skin but I want people to think that I am"?

Are they the ones that look a bit like tights?

RaraRachael · 25/08/2022 09:55

Well, every day is a learning day on MN. I'd never heard of scrunch bum leggings but they look absolutely hideous. Why on earth you'd want your arse to look like the back end of a bus is beyond me and I can't imagine that they're comfortable - not that I'll be buying a pair to find out.

At my school lots of us wear leggings but I can't imagine anybody turning up in a pair of these monstrosities.

Pumpkin314 · 25/08/2022 09:58

I don't think it comes under 'policing women's bodies' if there is no double standard - and I'm quite certain that if a male teacher/coach turned up to work with children wearing scrunch butt leggings there would be A LOT of questions asked about what he was thinking and the lack of appropriateness.

I think she's oblivious to the fact that boys that are are looking. They are though.

TheBikiniExpert · 25/08/2022 10:02

I don't think they are appropriate for any work environment.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 25/08/2022 10:04

Bums are prominent in any style of leggings. They just either look flat and can see every cellulite wobble, or they looks slightly more shapely in the “bum scrunch” style (I have a pair though normally either just wear in house or try wear a longer top of going out….but that’s my own self consciousness).

I guess I’d say more inappropriate at a secondary school with more hormonal teens. Primary school it’d probably be fine.

HobnobsChoice · 25/08/2022 01:58

From reading the link this isn't a teacher. It's a university student who is some sort of sports mentor/coach as part of a university activity (maybe yoga) aimed at kids. Wouldn't be my choice and I suspect the student mentor hasn't really considered that they aren't the best option. I do think they make your bum look quite weird. The pink versions of these types of leggings really are most unfortunate as they give a distinct baboon vibe.

I mean, it's just the human body and pretty decent for anything sport or activity based. We shouldn't be sexualising everything IMO.

penelopeisland · 25/08/2022 10:21

Everyone is so black and white nowadays!
why do we try and control each other so much?

You, me or your kids will come across people dressing differently all the time, and it is good to see something other than if every one wore the same clothes, thought the same.

is clothing not another form of self-expression?

I am not a huge fan of the leggings, but i do not feel the need to control other people’s clothing choices.
