There's a discussion going on about this at an Australian parenting site and I'm surprised at some of the comments tbh. I was wondering what MN thinks.

www.everybump.com.au/community/topic/7784-scrunch-butt-leggings-when-teaching-children/

I don't think that they're inappropriate at all and recoil at the idea of policing what women (especially young women) wear.

YABU: it's not appropriate for an educational setting.

YANBU: it's not a problem

Teaching assistant at our primary tends fo wear leggings and black fluffy sliders.

gogohmm · 25/08/2022 07:59

My dd wears them (not a teacher) I always tell her she needs to cover her bum when wearing leggings until actually exercising (I get ignored she's 20) they look frankly ridiculous

Pottedpalm · 25/08/2022 08:00

They are hideous and not suitable at all. Hope they don’t catch on with the lardy-arse legging wearers I see out and about.

If children are objectifying their teachers, then that’s the issue not the clothing.
🤦🏻‍♀️
Forgive the shit pun but how utterly ass backwards is this.

We’re blaming kids now, for the behaviour of grown adults who should know better? Perhaps in a teaching role we should accept that you don’t get to indulge your every last whim when it comes to clothing? Perhaps children need appropriate guidance from suitable role models so that appropriate interactions are taught and modelled at a young age?

Yes, this.

DeadbeatYoda · 25/08/2022 08:07

It's very much following the 'everything on display, all the time' fashion that seems to have reared its head. It not appropriate for schools at all. However, modesty is a dirty word these days ( for males or females) so it it at all surprising.
It's just about understandable for a sports occasion I suppose.

BeachyTime · 25/08/2022 08:08

When mini skirts came out in the 1960's, the Twiggy types looked really cute in them, but pretty soon everyone wore them, no matter their figure type. And that's why we quickly moved on to maxi skirts.

Delightful body shaming going on here. Heaven forfend someone wears a garment that you don't deem suitable for their figure. What a tosser.

That would not be tolerated at the schools my kids have attended.

The term "scrunch butt" makes me want to vomit.

They're not school attire.

There’s a TA in DC’s primary school who wears short skirts/dresses with no tights pretty much all year round. I don’t personally think that’s appropriate and I doubt you’d ever find a male member of staff wearing hot pants. Also wonder why she wears them usually with open toe shoes when it’s 0 degrees outside but there you go… I’ve definitely seen her flirting with Dad’s at pick up time more than once too, it’s a bit cringe.

Like any workplace, there’s a dress code of sorts. When teaching PE I’d expect to see longer shorts during warmer months on both males and females and leggings are fine but with a hoodie/longer tshirt and definitely not ones like those.

I know a TA whose thong showed above what she was wearing. She was told it was not appropriate. I don't think these are appropriate either.

.....but for females, mostly

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/08/2022 08:26

I don’t think the style of leggings matters, but I don’t think bum hugging leggings when your arse isn’t covered by a tunic or dress is appropriate for work or school, whether worn by men or women. I don’t think seeing every curve of a person’s bum is what you need in a work setting.

MarshaBradyo · 25/08/2022 08:27

Had no idea what they were

that pic is enough to now know

EmeraldShamrock1 · 25/08/2022 08:28

They wouldn't be my style.

I'd probably look twice if I saw the teacher wearing them.

I just read the first page of comments and other than the OP there’s only 1 person who agrees - the rest all say they’re fine??

I have a pair, they’re super comfy and flattering. Strange thing to have an issue with.

Flattering?!

orbitalcrisis · 25/08/2022 08:35

Personally I think the dress code for the teachers should be the same as the students'. If the uniform includes a blazers teachers should wear a suit and are not allowed to remove the blazer if the children can't. Etc. Same fabric too, see how they feel in a heatwave in a polyester suit!

Leggings should never be worn to work outside of a gym.

Teachers are at work, not at school.
They don't determine the uniform policy.

SunnyD44 · 25/08/2022 08:39

I think they’re fine.

I think school staff should wear whatever they want as long as they’re covered up and it’s not see-through.

We have a policy that shirts above the knee should be worn with tights and no low cut tops or crop tops.

These leggings are designed to make you look like you have a bigger and rounder bum and they may act a bit like shapewear but in reality unless you already have a nice bum it’s not going to magic one out of thin air.
The models who wear these for the shoots wear butt pads as there is a video of the photo shoot.

Apparently this is quite common and many ‘plus sized’ models have come forward to say that they’re actually a much smaller size but were made to wear fat pads in certain areas to make them look a bigger size but still have an ‘appropriate’ body.

The woman probably wears them as they’re comfortable to be in all day.
It annoys me that we’re still judging women on what they wear.

The classic whale tail, as seen in Kath and Kim.

Goodness! Remember when whale tails were fashionable? Low rise combats with the thong showing! They were everywhere.

SunnyD44 · 25/08/2022 08:43

Personally I think the dress code for the teachers should be the same as the students'.

I think most teachers would love to have this option.

I once worked at a school where there were staff polo shirts and you could wear black trousers or leggings with them.

I loved it as it took the worry of what to wear out of the equation and it was really easy to tell who was a student and who was staff.

What didn’t work was that the students didn’t wear uniform and called teachers by their first names - so it was like completely reversed.

I didn't realise that was deliberate, I always thought it was an unknowing faux pa 😆

SmileyClare · 25/08/2022 08:44

That thing women do; holding a second mirror or phone up with your back to the mirror to see what your bum looks like doesn't really give you the full picture.

In bright day light, walking around with nothing but tight lycra inserted into your bum, it's a very different lumpy wobbly story. Yes we can pretty much wear what we want these days but ( unless your bum is made of concrete) then flattering? No.
