To get a cat even though DH HATES them

DD (5) really wants a cat, she talks about one everyday, I am really open to the idea
and think it will be a good companion. DH hates them and will not budge. DD even asked if daddy could move out so we could get one.

YABU

But I hope you know that

NotAnEmmit · 16/08/2022 22:20

Ah that’s a tough one but I think yab(a bit)u.

if he wasn’t too keen but reluctantly agreed then fair enough, but if he really HATES them then no it’s not fair on him.
id be so upset if DH got a pet that he knew I would hate having in our home.

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:21

I think I know I am being unreasonable but I really want one 😩

Badgirlriri · 16/08/2022 22:22

I doubt he’d hate it for long 😂 they always manage to win men over.

Velvian · 16/08/2022 22:22

No of course you can't, YABVU!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 16/08/2022 22:23

Is anyone else getting deja vu over the ‘my 3yo wanted a cat’ troll the other day?

5foot5 · 16/08/2022 22:24

You know you really can't don't you? It would be totally unfair.

If your DD really wants a pet then are there any domestic animals your DH could live with? My DH also dislikes cats. When D D was small we got her guinea pigs. They make lively pets and are fairly easy to look after. DH actually got quite fond of ours in the end.

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:24

Oh really, there was a troll? How did you know they were trolling?

OP posts:
AllFreeOwls · 16/08/2022 22:25

How impressed would you be if your DH got a pet that you'd specifically said you disliked?
YABU I'm afraid.

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:25

I just feel bad as I know how much DD wants one.

OP posts:
Igmum · 16/08/2022 22:25

Well I'd go for the cat and ditch DH ...

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:26

I wouldn’t be in that position, I quite like most animals.

OP posts:
VeryQuaintIrene · 16/08/2022 22:26

Question is - why does he hate them If it's real fear or allergy, then you can't. If it's just prejudice, then maybe... (disclaimer - I couldn't be with someone who didn't at least tolerate cats.)

Schooldil3ma · 16/08/2022 22:26

I hate cats. If DH brought a cat home he and the cat would be out.
How dare you think your more important than another adult and get the final say? I hope you're a troll, if not you're a narcissist.

5foot5 · 16/08/2022 22:26

Badgirlriri · 16/08/2022 22:22

Nope. I can't imagine DH being won over by a cat. Or dog. Especially not a dog.

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:27

He says he is allergic but we have a dog, wouldn’t he be allergic to that too?

OP posts:
mattressspring · 16/08/2022 22:28

My 5 year old wanted a cat, a dog, a horse and a budgie. I just said no.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 16/08/2022 22:28

Many years ago my dh said yes to getting dkittens. 2.
Whenever he felt like it he raged I had taken the piss by getting them when I knew he didn't want them.

His idea genuinely..
Anyway he is an exh and dcat is now 10. Sadly one died 2 years ago.

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:28

Woah hold on I haven’t bought the cat? Hardly narcissistic. Jesus Christ

Not necessarily.

YAB completely U, and I think you know it!

SleepingStandingUp · 16/08/2022 22:29

Yes, yabu. Hopefully the Daddy comment was said laughingly or you told her off for being unkind. She has a dog, she can have a toy cat, you can get a divorce and a cat. Those are the options.

NoseyNellie · 16/08/2022 22:30

..and what happens if dog & cat don’t get along?

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 16/08/2022 22:30

You could install a catio and then the cat lives outside - would your DH be happy with this ?

You could also foster cats with rescues so you only have a cat for a short period (a test period). This does have downside though with a 5 year old as she may not understand the temporary nature of the arrangement. Incidentally Cats Protection would provide outdoor housing if this is required.
