To get a cat even though DH HATES them

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:18

DD (5) really wants a cat, she talks about one everyday, I am really open to the idea
and think it will be a good companion. DH hates them and will not budge. DD even asked if daddy could move out so we could get one.

OP posts:

YABU

Your DH lives there too. Can he explain to his DD? Could you look at another species - a dog, fish, a hamster et etc?

Bonjovispjs · 17/08/2022 07:45

It's very cruel and ridiculous to bring a cat into a home where it will be hated by someone there and to the person suggesting fostering...just no, what a stupid suggestion, I foster cats and no animal shelter is going to allow them to be fostered with someone who isn't totally onboard 🙄You do realise they will be thoroughly vetted for suitability first don't you?

AngelinaFibres · 17/08/2022 08:05

Badgirlriri · 16/08/2022 22:22

I doubt he’d hate it for long 😂 they always manage to win men over.

My husband absolutely hates cats. Their bums in your face, their shitty feet and bums all over the work surfaces after they've used the litter tray, bits of dead animal left as gifts, shit all over the garden. I used to quite like cats. Not any more

Christonabike37 · 17/08/2022 08:07

You can't bring an animal into a household where its hated.

Hope you're joking. If someone did this to me I would seriously consider leaving. It's beyond disrespectful.

Me to a tee. Their owners always tell these as funny, endearing stories and it only cements the determination never, ever to get one or agree with having one

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:21

I think I know I am being unreasonable but I really want one 😩

I sincerely hope you also pulled your child up on her comment btw.

I wouldn’t leave. I’d just take the cat to the shelter.

Brefugee · 17/08/2022 08:15

There are some things where all household members have to be on board and pets is one of them. One no, and sorry, no pet.

Two things stand out and are niggles here.

What did you say to DD when she suggested rehoming her father? Short shrift (in an age-appropriate way) and she should apologise to him.
And you don't believe he has allergies? What do we say "believe her"? Well believe him. Don't be That Person.

entropynow · 17/08/2022 08:25

All the 'cat lovers' (as distinct from sensible cat owners) on this post suggesting OP get a cat regardless only further demonstrate what I've long experienced: that many of them are shortsighted misanthropes believing that loving cats makes them nice people.
Doesn't.

Verbena1 · 17/08/2022 08:32

Totally unreasonable. I feel sorry for any cat brought into that situation.

Agreed. I can't stand cats (and am not a "shitty person" as mentioned upthread. I'd never hurt one but there's no way I'd share my home with one. If I was manipulated into it by my OH you can be damn sure the relationship wouldn't recover.

OP, your DH may be allergic, or he may just be like me, saying he's allergic so he doesn't constantly get questioned on why he doesn't like cats. It gets so tedious.

The lack of respect for people with a different opinion to theirs on this thread is staggering.

BronzeSage · 17/08/2022 08:37

You can't do it. But equally it isn't fair when one person always gets their own way with these pronouncements.

CalistoNoSolo · 17/08/2022 08:48

Can't stand cats, filthy, flea ridden creatures, shitting everywhere and devastating wildlife populations. The Polish Academy of Science recently declared cats an alien invasive species because of the damage they do to small mammals and song birds. YABVU to even consider getting a cat if your husband doesn't want one.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/08/2022 09:00

Hates them or is scared of them. There is a massive difference.
If it’s the latter them obviously that has to be taken into consideration.

Mind you I’m with your DD tell him to move out and let the cat move it.
😂. (Light hearted before you all come for me)

InTheFridge · 17/08/2022 09:02

I hate cat.

I have 3 😁 love my cats, still hate.other people's cats though.. evil things and I can't read them.

gatehouseoffleet · 17/08/2022 09:06

YABU. I don't like dogs. If my DH wanted one and insisted on getting one, I would divorce him. I wouldn't really want a cat around either as I am allergic, but I could tolerate one if the house was well swept/hoovered etc.

Your DD needs to learn that I want doesn't get, and she can have a cat when she is old enough to look after (and pay for) it herself. Pets are expensive (cats not as expensive as dogs but you still need vaccinations etc).

I see you have drip fed that you have a dog. It would be unfair on the dog to get a cat, and it would be unfair on the cat as well. Sometimes they get on, sometimes they don't. And no, you can be allergic to one sort of animal and not another. I don't get close enough to dogs to know if I am allergic, but I don't seem to be even though I am allergic to cats.

gatehouseoffleet · 17/08/2022 09:07

Total joke, other birds kill birds! Most cats are too well fed to manage to catch things and if they do they were ill or injured anyway.

Hbh17 · 17/08/2022 09:07

Well, I wouldn't live in a house with a cat either. Maybe this is a good opportunity for your daughter to learn that we can't have everything we want in life?!

vivainsomnia · 17/08/2022 09:17

I just feel bad as I know how much DD wants one
Oh dear! This becomes ' I really feel bad because DD wants a £600 party for her 8th birthday, a £800 mobile phone fir her 19th, a £1k dress for Prom, a £15k car for her 18th birthday....'

Better start practicing saying no can't do now!

Loics · 17/08/2022 09:17

How silly to suggest OP get the cat anyway. I can't stand cats, and wouldn't tolerate one in my house. If DP did get one (luckily he despises them too), it would be taken straight to a rescue centre, which wouldn't be nice for the poor cat, having done nothing wrong.

Maireas · 17/08/2022 09:19

Luckyforyou · 16/08/2022 22:25

I just feel bad as I know how much DD wants one.

Then it's a good opportunity for the child to understand that you can't always have what you want.

Maireas · 17/08/2022 09:20

blubberyboo · 16/08/2022 23:01

I wouldn’t be indulging a child who is incredibly rude and unkind about her father.
she needs discipline not a pet. She already has a dog which will teach her responsibilities, she doesn’t need another animal.
it is completely unreasonable to bring a pet into a household where one member of the family doesn’t want it.

yes, exactly

My17 · 17/08/2022 09:22

Cats eat all the wildlife around the home birds , frogs, field mice

Rabbits
Guinea pigs
Hamster
Fish
Tortoise
The list of alternative pets is endless

InsertPunHere · 17/08/2022 09:26

@Luckyforyou , why do you think you know your husband’s allergies better than he does himself?

You’ve been told repeatedly here that yes, it’s entirely normal to be allergic to cats (very common allergy) and not allergic to dogs.

A cat allergy can be serious, and even at its mildest, very uncomfortable. You can’t subject your DH to that because you fancy a kitten.
