To be offended by a comment my friend made?

Hello :)

So I am getting a gorgeous French Bulldog puppy in a couple of weeks. I was discussing this with a very good friend of mine, about how I'm excited.. yadayada. So I then asked her "Would you ever get a dog or want to own a pet?". She immediately began to burst out laughing and said "No! I want to enjoy my life". A bit Confused I asked "What do you mean by that?"- she then said "As I said it... I want to enjoy my life, owning a pet- particularly a dog, I wouldn't get the spontaneity back, I would be worried about leaving it in the house for too long, paying for this and that, having to take it for walks when I don't feel like it. Sometimes- out of the whim, I just want to book a holiday but with a pet, I will have to think about who is going to take care of it, dog sitters...I may get a cat as they are a bit more independent but still, a pet comes with a lot of responsibility".

I think subconsciously she is trying to sway my decision from getting a pet or do you think she's a tad jealous. I was a bit offended by her comment but she can be very out there/too honest for my liking. What do you all think?

She was just being honest! Don't take it personally.

Dogs are HUGE commitments- did you just not want to hear that?

PurpleMarie · 06/08/2022 17:33

You’re being ridiculous. As some one who owns a dog, everything she said is true. she also didn’t volunteer this - you asked her point-blank and she answered with valid reasons.

Also - fuck off with the “tad jealous” - it’s a dog, not the mega millions.

m00rfarm · 06/08/2022 17:33

Nope, she just doesn’t want a pet. And your reaction is a bit weird. Have you owned a dog before?

JudithHarper · 06/08/2022 17:34

If you have taken offence, that's your action. You asked your friend a question but didn't like the answer.

Next time, don't ask.

countvoncount · 06/08/2022 17:34

I just think she was honest.
Everything she said is true!
Huge responsibility, and if you enjoy being spontaneous, it's limited with a dog
Don't think it's jealousy one bit

Mollymalone123 · 06/08/2022 17:34

As a dog owner I say she’s right though! And honestly I would never own a brachycephalic breed either

ZeroFuchsGiven · 06/08/2022 17:34

She is neither trying to dissuade you or is jealous. She is being honest, if you have not thought about all those things you are not ready to own a pet 🙄

monicagellerbing · 06/08/2022 17:35

I think you've took it the wrong way, she's not wrong to say that she'd still have her freedom if she doesn't have a dog, everything she mentioned is correct, dogs are tying. I assume you know all this and have weighed up pros and cons before getting the puppy and you're happy to go ahead. It's just a difference in opinion, no need to be offended or think she's jealous! I love my dog with all my heart but I do admit sometimes it would be easier if I'd never got one.

ForensicFlossy · 06/08/2022 17:35

She is right. And trust me, she is definitely not jealous!

dementedpixie · 06/08/2022 17:35

I think she was being truthful
You do lose spontaneity when you have a pet and they add expense to everything too.
I have 2 cats and if we go away we need to arrange for and pay for a cat sitter to come in.
I imagine a dog needs even more input if you go away

EVHead · 06/08/2022 17:35

What she said is true and I don’t see any reason for taking offence.

Comedycook · 06/08/2022 17:35

You are massively over thinking

Chdjdn · 06/08/2022 17:35

She’s just being honest; if someone asked me I’d say the same or a bit more of a blunt - I don’t like dogs much

Ontomatopea · 06/08/2022 17:35

You asked her a question she answered you honestly. She probably doesn't want to hear you moaning about not being able to join in due to dog

dudsville · 06/08/2022 17:36

You have different notions of what brings each of you happiness. That's OK and doesn't have to be a personal reflection on your life choices.

MintJulia · 06/08/2022 17:36

She's just been honest. If you didn't want to know her answer, you shouldn't have asked.

I wouldn't have a dog either, too much of a tie. I'll dog sit for a friend for a week, but that's enough for me. It isn't an unusual view.

Didimum · 06/08/2022 17:36

Her reasons are all completely true of the realities of being a dog owner. They don’t have to bother you, but they are allowed to bother her. I wouldn’t get a dog for all the reasons she gave, but I don’t care if anyone else does. Why does it matter?

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 06/08/2022 17:37

I completely agree with your friend, and would never want a pet dog for that exact reason.
You sound like she should have agreed with you just because you wanted her to.
Surely you know owning a dog is a big commitment and does restrict what you can do??

choolaboola · 06/08/2022 17:37

It's all true and it's fine for her to have that opinion! Why are you so sensitive? It's not like giving birth, there's no genuine reason why she wouldn't have a dog if she wanted one, and she doesn't. So....?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 06/08/2022 17:37

And believe me NO-ONE is jealous you are getting a mutt.

jays · 06/08/2022 17:37

You asked her if SHE would get a dog and she said no and explained why. I’m not being bad but I think you’re kinda making it about you here after asking her about herself. And tbf, everything she said is true, they are a massive responsibility and you do lose the spontaneity in life and it’s a huge commitment. Obviously one you’re happy to make but I think she was just being honest! I wouldn’t think twice if my friend said that at all. Hope you have lots of happy days with your new puppy btw!

Cheeseandlobster · 06/08/2022 17:37

This in spades. She is absolutely right. And don't get me started on the French bulldog puppy. Do you know how many health problems these dogs have? But they are designer innit 🙄

35965a · 06/08/2022 17:38

I wouldn’t take offence no, she was truthful and she was completely correct in what she said. She’s definitely thought through the pros and cons of pet ownership, more people should be like her tbh.

Astitch · 06/08/2022 17:38

Mollymalone123 · 06/08/2022 17:34

I agree. Awful breed issues, it's cruel of the OP to be buying into that market.

Magicandspiders · 06/08/2022 17:38

YABU she is entitled to her opinion. God, people have said similar things to me about kids and I'm not offended in the slightest. It's true!
