Keir? Next PM?

I don't think he is. Comes across as whiny and self-righteous. Next election I suspect the Tories are toast.

So - if not Dishi Rishi or Sir Keir - then whom?!

Why is Rayner embarrassing? I agree I don't think she could be elected as Leader/PM, but why is she embarrassing, other than being a bit rough round the edges ?

Because telling working class people that the best like for like representation they could find of them was a potty mouthed individual whose claim to fame is to be a teenage single mother, is most certainly offensive. It’s like saying, oh look you northern plebs, we have found someone just like you - Vicky Pollard.

This is not how Northern working classes see themselves. They are just like aspirational people anywhere. Having Angela Rayner as the poster person for northerners is patronising and insulting.

walkersareback · 10/07/2022 16:04

It may be true but why don't working class people believe that a working class person can do a good job.

FWIW - I bloody love Angela Rayner!

I don't know, generations of conditioning about what the ruling classes should look/sound like?

I like Rayner to but she has the (electoral) disadvantages of being too working class and a loud mouthed, uncouth woman. Both things "we" should approve of but don't seem to.

Theoneinthemiddle · 10/07/2022 16:09

Someone I know swears that if Kier goes with one idea- NHS NHS NHS he will win the election- as Tony did with education .

The truth is, there is a lot of low hanging fruit he could take aim at. However, Kier is not Tony, Kier is more of a Labrador to Tony’s terrier.

And there we have it. She's intelligent, hardworking, superb in HoC debates has achieved amazing things, but she's loud and uncouth... Even the working class think the working class should be deferential.

lunar1 · 10/07/2022 16:10

I don't think labor want to be in power yet, they are biding their time. Keir would probably lose to the Tories, as another poster said, Andy Burnam would be a great choice for them. He's definitely one of the people and very relatable, He's very visible locally.

Especially working class women. That view is actually quite misogynistic. The same behaviour from a working class man wouldn't, I don't think, be seen as embarrassing.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 16:11

Rayner’s constituents like her enough to keep voting for her. She’s survived three general elections so presumably she’s doing something right.

walkersareback · 10/07/2022 16:12

@SnowyLamb - it's just depressing isn't it?

Corbyn’s constituents have been voting for him since 1983. Not exactly re-assuring for the party, though, is it?

Absolutely, what could be more aspirational than a working class single mother with no formal qualifications rising to the front benches? But no, she's embarrassing...

NightmareSlashDelightful · 10/07/2022 16:18

I think calling Angela Rayner uncouth when you’ve got literal Boris Johnson in Number 10 is disingenuous in the extreme! 🤣

jeaux90 · 10/07/2022 16:19

Keir sounds like a screechy student half the time. His crass worming around the "what is a woman" question tells me he has the integrity of a hyena.

Rosie Duffield is probably one of the few LP MPs I actually trust.

I like Andy Burnham too. I mean whoever is leader, there wil always be people find a reason to criticise but Labour do have to work harder because the Tories have already achieved their aim of lowering people's expectations of them to zero. The expenses scandal is a great example - I remember people saying "well you would expect it of Tory MPs". How can it be right that the Tories get away with having a moral bypass but just get away with it over and over? I don't even know what the point of them is anymore. Even the stuff that they could be relied on in the past like economic policy - they can't even do that anymore.

Fifi0102 · 10/07/2022 16:24

I'm going to vote labour we need a change. The Tories have been in power for 12 years we need some new blood

I don't see the conservatives protecting us either - as shown by the whole Sarah Everard vigil. We now have gender neutral toilets at work, with no consultation whatsoever, and my daughter's previous school, which is a girls' school, now has trans girls attending. The school only has girls' changing rooms. Don't be fooled - the Conservative party is not a woman's friend.
Sorry for the whataboutery.

'And there we have it. She's intelligent, hardworking, superb in HoC debates has achieved amazing things, but she's loud and uncouth...'

Rayner is often wrong though. I don't care that much if she's loud and uncouth, she could maybe tone the bellowing down a bit, but it's the fact she makes a tit of herself fact wise that is the problem. Please refer to to Penny Mordaunt V Angela rayner HOC clip for a typical example.

spanishsummers · 10/07/2022 16:32

And now I have confirmed that my phone always autocorrects Kier to Kefir! Twice now.

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2022 16:33

I wish that someone would tell the LP to get a new leader : I did read ( mail ) that Dominic Cummings is leaking things to a Labour Party activist or someone about the candidates for new leader , maybe he could have a word? If that's true. Now is the time. Nobody I know likes him at all and these are not all conservatives.

The way that Jeremy Hunt answered the gender ID argument was pretty good today , even though the rest of it wasn't what I'd want in a leader.
Mick Lynch is the only person I've heard speak any sense lately ( about capitalism etc) , but he can't run for it as he isn't an MP.

It was in 2017. He damn nearly saw May’s government off and got 12.8 million votes. 🤷‍♀️

Exactly. Even if they are all 'as bad as each other' - after 12 years why not actually give the others a chance to prove otherwise - the bar is already just about zero anyway. It is doubtful that Labour will get in by themselves anyway. It almost certainly will have to be some kind of Lib-Lab agreement.

The right will go hard on the ‘at least X knows what a woman is’ rhetoric but it’s so empty and disingenuous. They try to anchor the debate around trans rights while doing/saying the bare minimum (or even nothing at all) about rape convictions and statistics, education metrics, pay disparities, parental leave rights, abuse of women in the street, state benefit support, disability rights for women, violence against women and girls, period poverty, menopause support, STEM entry, treatment of women in the military and police, female/male balance at C-suite level, social mobility for working class women and girls, social mobility for Black and Asian women… etc etc. It’s a bullshit argument and people are beginning to see through it.
