To hope Johnson doesn't resign?

Because if he clings on until the next GE, he'll be completely unelectable and we'll be rid of the Tories.

I'm hoping he digs his heels in just like he always has, even though by rights he should be fucking off with his tail between his legs.

Imagine Starmer/Corbyn navigating us through (Global) problems of Covid/cost of living crisis

For those of us who aren't quite as imaginative - help us out.
What would Starmer or Corbyn have done that's as bad or worse than the Tories?

otherbookmarks · 05/07/2022 22:19

gnilliwdog · 05/07/2022 21:56

@otherbookmarks I suppose the prospect of people not being able to afford to eat is just more urgent for many people. If you can eat you can stay alive to fight any other issues. Don't see any sign this government has a plan to keep the nation fed.

Dramatisation much. I lived through having my mother borrow coats from neighbours to try to keep us warm at night (or at least warm enough to sleep). Sometimes you have to stand up for what is right. It's not the majority of conservatives, and it's definitely not labour, lib dems or greens who have no idea what a woman is. Look at Iran then decide if this is worth fighting form.

Isitsixoclockalready · 05/07/2022 22:20

For those questioning how Keir Starmer would deal with the current issues facing us or that both parties are as bad as each other - I think that it's about time we had a chance to judge because it's a race to the bottom with this current shower.

Pumperthepumper · 05/07/2022 22:20

It’s the ‘no-one knows what a woman is’ that’s going to keep the Tories in power, of course.

AmISpeakingAnotherLanguage · 05/07/2022 22:21

All parties need to be in an awful accident, so they can start from scratch.

I genuinely, for the first time ever, don’t know who to I’d vote for.

Kennykenkencat · 05/07/2022 22:22

I think the country isn’t going to recover anytime soon and if he did call an election and Labour got in power then things aren’t going to get better anytime soon and whilst Labour twist and turn trying to please everyone whilst the people who were supposed to be paying for it have buggered off. I think it would lead to a Tory Landslide in 5 years time.

Be careful about what you wish for.

IdiotCreatures · 05/07/2022 22:22

Our political system is not fit for purpose. It never had been and as long as there is a wider selection of bread in the supermarket than there are political parties to choose from, it will remain that way.
The system needs to be changed. Not the politicians.
The politicians only manage to get away with what they do because the system is rigged for them and against us.

As if the the tory party actually care about women 😆

The Tory party are not actively rejecting women's rights - the Labour Party are though, I agree with @otherbookmarks totally on that.

The Tories are at least starting to row back from some of the mistakes from the Gender Recognition Act and from unhitching Stonewall-law from institutions. I am really disappointed that Sajid Javid has gone from Health. When my elderly mother and MIL are in hospital I want them in single sex wards - no chance of that under Labour. I'd like Transwomen kept out of women's prisons. I'd like safe-guarding back in schools.

In 10-15 years time all the blue haired they/thems will be running the schools not attending them. The push-back in the face women's sex class being erased has to happen now or it will be too late.

And as for the hyperbole that people can't fight for women's rights if they are starving - don't exaggerate. Yes, things are very tough for many families including my own. Yes, many people are cutting back and there are people really seriously struggling on universal credit. But most people in this country - by a vast majority are not starving - and Labour won't be able to fix the energy crisis/inflation/cost of living any faster than the Tories.

As someone on a very low income I'd still rather secure women's rights for girls in my family than anything else.

carefullycourageous · 05/07/2022 22:27

Absolute Shock watching it all, what an amazingly arrogant man the PM is to remian when the public don't want him, his backbenchers don't want him and now senior members of the cabinet don't want him!

I would LOVE for him to call a GE or try to stay in post for even longer. What a total shitshow. Embarrassing.

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2022 22:28

How about Labour get their act together and get elected because they're the best, not just because the Tories are currently a shambles

Because that’s not how it works. The adage that oppositions don’t win elections, governments lose them has been around for decades.

reesewithoutaspoon · 05/07/2022 22:28

still got a while till a GE Tories traditionally reduce income tax in the year before the election and people forget how shit they've been for the previous years.
They need Johnson to hang on a bit longer while all the cost of living crap is happening then they can dump him, elect someone new who will ride in on a white horse waving tax cuts and people will vote them in again. Its too early to put someone in now because this winter will be harsh and they don't want their new leader to do unpopular stuff. Johnson is a convenient scapegoat until the time is right. because otherwise I,m bemused as to why they would be desperately clinging on to him as leader given all the lies, corruption, and general moral bankruptcy. Anyone else would have been long gone, so there has to be a reason why they are so determined to keep him in no 10

knackeredagain · 05/07/2022 19:00

Who else is there to vote for?

Exactly! There is no credible opposition. No party represents me..... I'm now politically homeless.

While I agree with you in principle OP, I live in Scotland and BJ is a massive liability. The number of people who have told me they would vote for independence this time around because they hate Boris is pretty scary so for the sake of the union, I want him out.

Kennykenkencat · 05/07/2022 22:30

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2022 21:07

How does anyone know how the opposition would have dealt with anything when they haven't been in power for 12 years ?
Makes me laugh when people say this because nobody knows ! ..

You have to wonder why they haven’t been in power for 12 years

Iran seems pretty certain about what a woman is. That's not a whole lot of help to the women in Iran. The Conservatives might be able to say what a woman is but that doesn't entail them giving two fucks about women's rights. It just means that -after more than a decade of prevailing over a gradual shift into TRA insanity - they've figured out a simple phrase that'll win them votes.

Fink · 05/07/2022 22:30

I would like him gone ASAP. But if I were a Labour politician I wouldn't actually want to be in government immediately: the Tories have screwed up Brexit, the economy, and the country in general so badly that it will be hard to turn around. Whoever takes charge at the next GE will inherit a poisoned chalice - they'll be blamed for reaping what has been sown over the past few years.

And don’t forget they were helping Argentina when Argentina invaded a British territory

Sounds like a candidate I can get behind.
Sorry Blossom Toes's dog.

Are you sure?

Yes for shagging, getting them pregnant and leaving them for a younger woman. Thanks for reminding me.

FrecklesMalone · 05/07/2022 22:39

lightisnotwhite · 05/07/2022 19:23

I couldn’t care less if the Conservatives are unelectable.
What I do want is a party that can do things long term, looks after the environment and that includes people that actually look after it for peanuts and doesn’t expand the inequality gap between rich and poor ( and justifies it with - it’s not a race to the bottom).

Well none of those things are rightwing policies so the Tories most certainly can't be your party.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/07/2022 22:39

@ChristinaXYZ, if you vote Conservative Penny Mordaunt is going to be a risk. They have form for changing leader halfway through a term.🙈

You're not a Scottish nationalist are you by any chance? 😂😂

They're desperate for Big Dog to stay as long as possible, for maximum hate votes. They'll be gutted if someone else gets in before indyref2.

You're the only person to have mentioned this on the thread and yet No voters call us obsessed Hmm
