To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

Crankley · 31/05/2022 20:33

Entirely up to you if you enjoy it. Personally I wouldn't watch it even if you paid me.

LampLighter414 · 31/05/2022 20:34

As with much reality tv it’s a great way to switch off and watch something mindlessly.

I enjoyed it a lot more a few years ago though. They have tamed down the sex, drinking and real drama (replaced with clearly produced arguments and forcing people who are upset with each other to makeup and pretend to get along for the camera)

Fairislefandango · 31/05/2022 20:35

Of course YANBU to watch the kind of programmes you enjoy. I've never seen it, but I can't imagine anything I'd like to watch less tbh. That doesn't mean YABU though.

This is so tragic. Surely, though, we cannot limit what we watch to things where no one has suffered mental health issues?

OvOvO · 31/05/2022 20:37

Put this in Telly Addicts when it starts on Monday and I love it too 💕

Regularmumnetter · 31/05/2022 20:39

i don’t mind it now but I preferred the earlier seasons that where a lot more unfiltered!

FuckingNoise · 31/05/2022 20:42

It's fucking grim and it should be banned, it's a terrible example for young girls thinking they will be ranked on their appearance alone, young boys to judge them on just that and for both sexes to generally treat each other like disposable old dish rags rather than human beings with feelings. I hate it. I also hate how it enables people with no talent or skills whatsoever to end up being millionaires, "influencers" 🙄 or presenters simply because they went on a programme that encourages young adults to fuck each other on national TV.

I love watching Love Island 🏝!!

I'm in my 30s with two kids and it's my nightly guilty pleasure in the summer evenings. DH doesn't watch with me.

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/05/2022 20:50

It's a load of absolute fucking tripe. Cheap and nasty titillating bollocks made for people who have nothing better to do in their lives.

Shameful, shambolic, SHITE!

I LOVE IT! Grin Can't wait for it to start!!!

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/05/2022 20:50

My DH watches it too! He begs me not to tell his mates he does though. Grin

A580Hojas · 31/05/2022 20:52

Yanbu. My guilty secret and I don't watch a lot of TV.

MinglingFlamingo · 31/05/2022 20:54

We having a thread for it this year? Those threads - didn't it get to like #20+ last year?? - Are better than the actual show!!!

I must admit I have watched (and enjoyed) Love Island in the past.

But I have to agree with the above.

In theory it's harmless reality TV shite but actually, if I had daughters I'd be appalled at the idea of them watching it. And as the mother of sons I'd be equally appalled at the idea of them thinking that Love Island could be something to aspire to. It glorifies everything that is dysfunctional and wrong about our society.

Unfortunately it is also strangely compulsive.

So YABU and YANBU.

It is watchable but depressing and dangerous at the same time!

limitededitionbarbie · 31/05/2022 20:55

I watch it too.i love it also

MelonsMelonsMelons · 31/05/2022 20:58

It’s harmless reality shit and sometimes you just need something that doesn’t require 100% concentration and that’s an easy watch. My main issue is how time consuming it is - so many episodes!

orangetriangle · 31/05/2022 20:59

I love it sad I know but...

This is what I was going to say. I hate reality TV with a passion, sorry OP.

Oinkypig · 31/05/2022 21:05

Yes, I can’t understand how you can watch a programme associated with the suicide of 3 people and not be able to remember that and then still enjoy it

SaintVal · 31/05/2022 21:11

I watched the first four - 2015 to 2018 - then I lost interest and didn't watch anymore. I've seen the ads for this year's contestants and they just make me feel ancient now! I'm sure they're getting younger .... 😆

APJ1 · 31/05/2022 21:43

These days I often see the contestants and think "Why would viewers fancy him? he's practically a CHILD!" 😄

It also made me feel old when one of the women a few years ago mentioned being 28. I thought "Oh, I thought she was younger than me..."

Then after a moment I realised she was. By four years.

That's a bit harsh.

balalake · 31/05/2022 20:31

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

Sophie committed suicide due to the suicide of her best friend and drugs.
Mike committed suicide due to the death of what he considered his parent, and drugs, and financial difficulties.

Caroline committed suicide due to the harassment of the media, her role as a presenter on that particular show played no part.

Please watch Laura Whitmore, her close friend's. speech following her death, where she condemned the trolls that blamed the show because Caroline loved Love Island.

I watched the full 3 hour inquest into the deaths related to ITV and while the Jeremy Kyle show was found to have contributed to the death of the guest, the head of ITV outlined the before and after care on the show and was found to in no way be responsible for any of the suicides.

You can slag the show all you like, but please don't imply I'm fine with suicides.

They've done this as a result of the inquests, as despite the frankly offensive comment by PP, they are aware of their duty of care.

i will rail against Caroline Flack's death for the rest of time, and have done on MN.

Don't you dare judge me.
