To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

OP posts:

I can understand why people appreciate 'brain dead' tv, but that does not make Love Island something I think should be on our screens.

An hour in the evening.

I assume you watch no TV?

I just don't like this culture of policing other people. They shouldn't be allowed to be on it and I shouldn't be allowed to watch it.

Surely it's far better that we just educate people (youngsters) about these things? It can actually be incredibly helpful - many of my older school pupils watch it and seeing situations play out in real time, like when Adam gaslighted Rosie a few years ago, can really help.

I didn't say anyone "shouldn't be allowed" to watch it. I think it shouldn't be on the TV at all.

I don't know what the situation you mentioned is about. I do not think any show that only shows thin, pretty people and manipulates and twists scenarios to play with said people's emotions is a good thing.

Fairislefandango · 01/06/2022 17:12

So what 'shows' set a good example in your opinion then?

What's with the inverted commas? Confused

What would you like young people to watch and enjoy?

Pretty much anything except trashy reality shows tbh. I have nothing against tv at all. Films, music programmes, drama series, comedy, documentaries, sport... Anything that's not just celebrities or wannabe celebrities talentlessly showing off, really.

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

People can watch whatever they like, regardless of what happened to people on the programmes. Flack’s suicide was supposedly related to the fact that she was being prosecuted for being a dv offender, not because she was on Love Island.

My husband and I have very stressful high pressure jobs. We watch it and enjoy the fact that we don’t have to use our brains. It’s a way of switching off.

JulyDreams · 01/06/2022 15:44

@minutesturntohours you MUST be fine with suicide though OP as you watch the show? Even watching the adds that's all I think about. Each to their own.

Think about how many musicians have killed themselves, how many actors. How many drug deaths there has been in those industries. Do you listen to music? Do you watch any TV? If you do are you fine with suicide, you MUST be?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/06/2022 17:49

Appearance & money obsessed exploitative telly that encourages viewers to judge & criticise participants, stokes malicious online gossip & puts vulnerable young people on the front line of

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/06/2022 17:51

Cheap & shallow debate by all sorts of media platforms.
It's grim, I hate the fact that we see other people's personal lives & emotional strife as 'mindless harmless entertainment' but then blame the 'mefia' and not ourselves for the fallout.

What does having a high pressure job have to do with anything?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2022 18:03

I hate when people say "I have a high pressure job" as if that somehow means you should be exempt from the same criticisms as anyone else.

brookstar · 01/06/2022 18:17

To be honest though I think people who watch shoes like this aren't happy in their own lives. If you need "mindless" telly to deal with your life I'd be wondering why.

What an odd thing to say.
How is watching something 'mindless' an indication that you aren't happy with your own life?

Bizarre

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 01/06/2022 18:21

I blooming love Love Island, I watch it with now 18 year old DD but we’ve watched together for years and it’s given us so many talking points, including serious ones such as ‘don’t settle for a man that treats you like that’ or ‘that’s controlling behaviour’.

brookstar · 01/06/2022 18:23

Why should someone be criticised for what they choose to watch on TV?

When it involves exploitation of people for entertainment purposes, I think it's a valid criticism.

Plus it sets a terrible example to the next generation.

If you're relying on tv to set a good example to your kids then you've got bigger problems to deal with!

I don’t let my kids watch that crap or have social media. Plenty do though, and my kids have to live in a society with the idiots that result from it.

I hope you never read another newspaper again. Not only is media coverage a factor in Caroline's death (along with a long list of other issues l) but media coverage of celebrity suicide is also linked to an increase in suicides 🙃

So funny.... and predictable. These types of threads always bring out the judgemental people!!

You sound like someone I used to work with who declared that Facebook was for morons to our head of digital marketing 😂😂 She was an unrelenting snob too.

It’s snobby to not want my kids watching trash TV? Okay.

It's fine to restrict what your own children watch on tv. That's just normal parenting.

To criticise others for watching 'crap' and for using social media and then call them idiots, is snobby and very judgemental.

I don’t like the sort of people who glorify the culture of reality TV. It’s not snobby to say that? Is it judgemental? Possibly. I’m okay with that. I’m okay with judging a behaviour I think is negative.

It's not snobby. I know what snobby is, I am a young single mum on minimum wage getting benefits covered head to toe in tattoos so I've been on the receiving end of snobby many times.

It's this type of programme that can be pretty damaging to kids as they constantly compare themselves to these people.

And it makes them think popularity and material goods are the purpose of life. It’s just an empty, shallow programme.

brookstar · 01/06/2022 19:19

And I really detest people who are judgemental and call people names and then dress it up as being acceptable behaviour because they believe they have the moral high ground. Like that makes it okay.

It's snobby to call someone an idiot for watching something you don't like/agree with as another poster did.
