To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

It's utter shite and yes I do judge people who watch it, or any reality tv tbh.

Chocolatepringles · 01/06/2022 07:59

Obviously you are entitled to watch whatever you want on TV.

Personally I am horrified that this sort of programme is allowed. What sort of message does it give out to young people?

I overheard one of my colleagues, a well-educated professional woman whom I have always respected, say thst she loved it and my estimation of her plummeted.

But I kept my thoughts to myself. It's her life.

To be honest though I think people who watch shoes like this aren't happy in their own lives. If you need "mindless" telly to deal with your life I'd be wondering why.

Because I work in a very stressful , very challenging and emotionally draining job and like to watch something that isnt more misery.

@araiwa I dont mind being judged over a programme. I mind the implication that I'm okay with suicide. Theres really no need to swear at me.

This really made me laugh

🤣🤣🤣

lollipoprainbow · 01/06/2022 09:45

I watched it a few years ago but only because a local resident was on it. They have now become a 'celebrity' through no discernible talent apart from appearing on the show and being dumped and humiliated !! The family and friends are loving getting in on the act too.

TinySaltLick · 01/06/2022 09:47

It pretty much encapsulates the very worst of modern society, it is shameful television and by watching it you are partly responsible for its continued existence and exploitation

It adds no value to the human race, and I absolutely judge anyone for watching it with their limited time on this earth

The rationale about it being mindless nonsense to unwind is paper-thin. There are countless other hobbies and content which would offer the same release.

Just like anyone else I have unfortunately come across who watches it, the patchwork of lies used to try and excuse themselves from judgement is beyond embarrassing

Dirtylittleroses · 01/06/2022 09:49

I like it too op and it’s also my guilty secret. I am horrified at the lack of understanding of some posters here who blame the show for the tragic suicides. It shows a deep lack of understanding and respect for what those people went through, their deaths were not due to the tv program and to even hint they might be is shameful.

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 09:53

While the show may not directly be responsible for the suicides, the fact is that these tv shows generally choose people who are vulnerable, often have MH issues and are clearly seeking some validation. It’s exploitative in the extreme, so while these people may already have been in a place where they were contemplating suicide, the show has allowed them a public platform to do it on.

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 09:54

So yes, while watching love island doesn’t necessarily mean you support suicide, it does mean that you support the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

What do you mean “may” not be. They absolutely are not responsible. Caroline flacks tragic death was nothing to do with the fact she presented love island, and your suggestion is heinous.

neither Sophie or Mikes death was anything to do with their appearance on the show, and their family and friends were clear on that. Do not disrespect them all by suggesting you know better. It comes across as foolish in the extreme.

Oh well who cares?

I bet YOU watch/do something we would all judge YOU on

No it doesn't

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 10:03

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 10:00

No it doesn't

What is watching a programme full of people with mental health issues, many of whom have deep-routed issues in their personal lives, and many of whom will go on to develop substance abuse problems, toxic relationships, and other associated MH issues all of which will play out in the tabloids due to their appearances on love island if it isn’t supporting the exploitation of the vulnerable.

Who cares? It is literally the discussion topic of the thread. Given you have clicked on it and fumbled a few replies, I would be as bold to suggest that you, in fact, care.

artisanbread · 01/06/2022 10:07

Can't stand it. It glorifies the idea of being good-looking and stupid. Some of the contestants probably (hopefully) aren't as thick and ignorant as they make themselves out to be but still try their best to come across this way as apparently this is appealing to the public.

I have DDs aged 10 and 12 and the show is sadly quite popular with impressionable girls of their age but there's not a chance mine will be allowed to watch it.

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 10:08

@AlternativePerspective

So if you don't watch this show how are you assuming all this!?

Do you know their mental health ins and outs then? I'd love to know where you obtained ALL this confidential info ALL of the contestants?

Or are you 'just guessing'?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 01/06/2022 10:08

I once came across a former LI contestant in everyday life. They were without doubt, the stupidest person I'd ever met. Also the most arrogant. They were absolutely loaded off the back of this awful shite and seemed to think they were leagues above mere mortals. Ghastly.
Or in other words:
STOP MAKING STUPID PEOPLE FAMOUS

JulyDreams · 01/06/2022 10:09

JulyDreams · 01/06/2022 10:09

balalake · 31/05/2022 20:31

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

This. Yet it's not been cancelled?

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 10:09

@TinySaltLick

Yes. I watch it. And so do you

violuhts · 01/06/2022 10:11

half of the mn crew on here sound horrible, and i'm glad i don't know most of you personally because you sound like a pain. YANBU to enjoy the show, i generally enjoy it too. and to the suicide comments, if people weren't so full of shit on the internet and plain out horrible, maybe contestants wouldn't go to these lengths, put this down to our messed up generation as opposed to reality shows. if you find something you enjoy, watch it, and don't let anyone else tell you what's right or wrong. people aren't always going to see eye to eye with you, and that's ok.

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 10:13

Well, the fact that 2 contestants and a presenter have ended their own lives is a pretty good indication that the mental health of contestants is in question, don’t you think?

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 10:15

it’s pretty obvious that this thread has been started to be deliberately goady.

The OP asks if she is unreasonable. Clearly she must think that maybe she is otherwise she wouldn’t have posted here, unless she deliberately wanted to start an argument. Mmm which is it I wonder…

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 10:15

@AlternativePerspective

All 3 families have said it was nothing to do with the show though?

Now, who do I believe here....the families and loved ones or an internet randomer?
