To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

I've seen the ads for this year's contestants and they just make me feel ancient now! I'm sure they're getting younger .... 😆

These days I often see the contestants and think "Why would viewers fancy him? he's practically a CHILD!" 😄

It also made me feel old when one of the women a few years ago mentioned being 28. I thought "Oh, I thought she was younger than me..."

Then after a moment I realised she was. By four years.

Mind when Scottish laura was 28 and it was the biggest deal ever :'(

It's fucking grim and it should be banned, it's a terrible example for young girls thinking they will be ranked on their appearance alone, young boys to judge them on just that and for both sexes to generally treat each other like disposable old dish rags rather than human beings with feelings. I hate it. I also hate how it enables people with no talent or skills whatsoever to end up being millionaires, "influencers" 🙄 or presenters simply because they went on a programme that encourages young adults to fuck each other on national TV.

Is it OK then for the girls to rank the boys on their appearance alone?

Tbh, I could give numerous examples where people of either sex have left their "good looking" partner for someone else based on feelings.

Nobody has sex on Love Island anymore, and if they do it's not been shown since the early series due to the concerns raised.

Molly Mae is not my cup of tea but she is the only one of 2 serious influencers from that show, and in fairness to the girl, she has made millions. Or is that not OK?

If you could find me an ex Love Island contestant who is a presenter, I'd be interested. Apart from Kem, who presents on his own merit. Amber Davies is a performer in the West End. Camilla detonates bombs in the Middle East. Alex George is a doctor who is also a mental health advocate, Anna is a pharmacist, Rosie is a lawyer, Chris supported Jesy Nelson through her breakdown, Wes nearly won Dancing on Ice due to his incredible skating. Need I continue?

i don’t mind it now but I preferred the earlier seasons that where a lot more unfiltered!

they can't win here. We all enjoyed the unfiltered series but due to ridiculous views like PP, they have had to rein it in.

My DH watches it too! He begs me not to tell his mates he does though. Grin

Yes, my ex "didn't watch it" yet seemed to know everything that was going on/

@MinglingFlamingo you bet!

It’s harmless reality shit and sometimes you just need something that doesn’t require 100% concentration and that’s an easy watch. My main issue is how time consuming it is - so many episodes!

I agree.

And same. My friend records and catches up - I just watch it and if I miss one, so be it.

We never miss a recoupling though obv!

First couple of series were good. But after it became huge and all the suicidesi t doesn't have the same appeal to me anymore. I hope it's had its day.

I do enjoy some reality TV though and won't apologise for it. I can switch off my brain which may not appeal to some but I suffer from anxiety so it's nice to just totally switch off for an hour.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 31/05/2022 23:44

Why are you even asking if you are going to attack everyone that disagrees with you?

Suprima · 31/05/2022 23:56

To my shame, I have only really enjoyed it when there was obviously very little safeguarding of contestants- where they were encouraged to drink a lot and put in stressful situations. Explosive reality TV. It makes me feel awful to admit it, but that’s what kept me tuning in each night.

I tried to watch the more recent seasons and I found it utterly dull.

I think you'll find I didn't attack the PP who said they didnt enjoy it, it was nonsense, etc. because people are entitled to an opinion.

I defended myself over the suggestions I'm okay with suicide which I think is pretty fair enough.

And I debated the influencer point because there are far more real careers than influencers.

None of this is "attacking".

Back to PP -

Yes, I think I'm the same. I enjoy the mindlessness.

But I have to say I also enjoy real situations playing out, if you will.

I love watching Love Island, watch it every year 😊 I see it as a bit of escapism and find it entertaining (although the more recent series haven't been as good as previous ones).

The suicides of Caroline, Sophie and Mike were not related to the show so don't understand why people keep mentioning that.

minutesturntohours · 01/06/2022 00:22

I get really angered by people who claim to 'care' about people who use their tragic deaths to further an agenda.

Laura Whitmore herself as Carolines best friend has spoken out about people doing this, as she has been very vocal about how much Caroline loved Love Island.

minutesturntohours · 01/06/2022 00:23

The irony is the reason you, I and a few PP have said it is now tame and boring is due to measures put in by ITV to appease idiots who think the show was to blame.

Op ignore the idiots

You can enjoy what you like. DD's friend was on it and is still living the high life off the back of it. It gives plenty of opportunity to those who want it

so tempted to ask who the pal is!

It does, and it brings mindless for those of us who need it in our lives.

Tbh, in opposition to PP, as I work with young people I see the discussion it generates. Adam's gaslighting a series or so ago was seriously helpful.

Yeah I agree with you. Really don't think it's fair to blame the show for her suicide when it's clear that the reason her MH declined was due to the harassment of the media and the situation she was going through with her then boyfriend (but I'll stop there because don't want to turn this thread into one all about suicide!)

Rubyroseyposey · 01/06/2022 00:28

Its dire. A lot of my friends watch it though and I get to see it plastered all over fb 🙄

minutesturntohours · 01/06/2022 00:29

Love Island was the best thing in her life.

It wa the media and the court case.

Caroline would have hated the show to have been cancelled in her name. funny how MN know better than the testimony of her own best friend who rallied against that kind of judgement.

Mike also had serious personal circumstances, it was the media who made up that the "muggy Mike" is what affected him (so much so, he went back in a few weeks after his eviction when he knew fine well he was muggy Mike!)

Sophie bless her heart had her own battles.

I agree with you, and I think it's such a cheap trick to play.

Posting on aibu seems.a real fucking stupid idea if you don't want to be judged..

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2022 06:05

YABU. Shows like this are everything that's wrong with the country. It's basically saying that you're only worth something if you're pretty.

It gives plenty of opportunity only to people who are considered attractive by modern beauty standards. Not to anyone who "wants" it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2022 06:09

To be honest though I think people who watch shoes like this aren't happy in their own lives. If you need "mindless" telly to deal with your life I'd be wondering why.

So you are content to watch a programme where two former contestants and a former presenter have committed suicide?

Ooh you seem over dramatic enough to be on love island. Grab you bikinis and fake tan and get yourself to the airport. Fingers crossed your flight is not cancelled.
