To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

@Bbq1

They can't string a sentence? That's a worry then since they have had doctors,a pharmacist and humanitarian aid workers amongst the contestants!

I am aware that there have been doctors etc on there but they come across as very shallow and unintelligent. Good at acting then too I suppose ...

You don’t have to personally watch every reality TV show to have a problem with the concept of reality TV.

But you’ve said you don’t watch any in a previous post.

Do you not think some of what you have said is a bit nasty/spiteful? You missed answering that question.

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 12:44

Those who are slagging everyone off for watching love island seem to know a hell of a lot about the ins and outs of it!!

Almost as if they watch it themselves

The only possibly “spiteful” thing I said was that reality tv produces “idiots” and I think that’s rather tame really.

Why would I watch it? Just because you find trashy tv entertaining doesn’t mean the rest of us do.

RingBinderInjury · 02/06/2022 12:46

I watched it for the first time last year. Watched it through to the bitter end as I’m a weird masochistic tv starter-finisher. God it was SO BORING. I screen-stacked my way through every episode.
Nothing happens. Day after day of putting on clothes and taking off clothes, dull nothing conversations and weird fake arguments.
I have subsequently discovered Below Deck which is a million times more interesting shite reality tv. It has locations, lovely food and vulgar rich people alongside weird fake arguments.

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 12:48

@ForestFae I don't think I said YOU did

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/06/2022 12:49

I haven't watched it. I use Instagram and twitter a lot though so it's hard to escape these people!

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 12:49

And I admit I only started watching it as my dd's friend was in it. Would have passed me by otherwise as I'm not one for tv

BreakAwayTime · 02/06/2022 12:50

It’s not just about the contestants though, it’s about the audience. Vulnerable young women and men to a lesser extent thinking this is what to aim for in life.

That is where parents, family, real life role models and the community around them needs to come in and provide support, education and attractive alternatives and opportunities to explore different options. I don’t think a television show is solely responsible for the ambitions of young people. Demonising it won’t change anything as long as social media continues to grow and they are continually exposed to it. If reality television disappeared nothing would change because these aspirations are mainly social media driven. Reality tv is just a drop in the ocean.

On Twitter you can mute words! Every time a celebrity tweet shows up, I mute that name. Utter bliss

I have actually muted it now, along with Piers Morgan, Katie Hopkins and the Kardashians!

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 12:51

I think you would have to follow them on Instagram to see their feed and stories?

I have a whole list of muted names, words, phrases, hashtags. It makes it a much nicer place imo

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/06/2022 12:53

You really don't need to watch it to know what it's about anyway. There are enough discussions about it to figure it out.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/06/2022 12:54

And the name gives it away slightly. "Love Island", well it's clearly about people going on an island to find love.

ForestFae · 02/06/2022 12:58

To be honest the whole voyeuristic notion people have of celebrity relationships in general is creepy in my opinion. Shows like Love Island are just an extension of it - magazines trying to guess who’s dating who, or reporting on people’s divorce drama, affairs, - WHY?! Why does anyone care?! Why are people so invested in strangers private lives and why do they want to watch it or read about it?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/06/2022 13:01

That Fred Siriex presents a dating programme as well doesn't he?

And there's Naked Attraction! Weird.

HaggisBurger · 02/06/2022 13:15

I’m with you OP. It’s a lovely bit of fun. Watching it helps me connect with my teens, chat to them about relationships all sorts.
My bf and I were talking about how, last summer, when we first started dating, he got into it. Having always been a (having never seen it) “oh my god Love Islands is for morons”. We were laughing about how when you’re a bloke in a new relationship you suddenly develop new interests 😉. But he genuinely enjoyed, liked the people and saw why it’s so popular among different age groups, demographics.
Fine if you’ve watched it to say it’s drivel. If you’ve never watched it all you can say is you’re not interested in it. Which is fine!
Roll on Monday.

riotlady · 02/06/2022 13:30

It’s trash, I love it, can’t wait for Monday.

That’s a simplistic viewpoint. To form a strong, informed opinion shouldn't someone watch it to experience it for themselves alongside reading and researching it? To have the strong opinions that you do about it and to voice them so vehemently I’d have thought it was based on more than reading some discussions on social media/in the media. You actually know very little about the programme or the people that have taken part. You really only know snippets. It’s difficult to form a balanced judgement with snippets. This is why we all need to think a bit more about how we choose to express our judgements and acknowledge our bias and prejudice before doing so.

loomband · 02/06/2022 13:53

I agree re watching. I was in the crowd of 'why do people watch this' but I got into it one year. I did enjoy it actually, and I really enjoyed talking about it to friends afterwards. The format's a bit repetitive so none were as engaging as the first I watched a few years ago. You do need to watch to have an opinion really.

MinglingFlamingo · 02/06/2022 13:53

@RingBinderInjury I love Below Deck. Unlike a lot of reality tv the crews are doing something a bit constructive and it's not just party, getting drunk and romance. Even though there is that it's not the main focus. The Below Deck thread on mn which is fab conversation about the shows is a good a read and worth checking out if you're a fan of the show

People have always been interested in other peoples lives! It's just the medium of delivery they has changed.

the same reason you are continuing to drivel on about a programme you neither watch nor like.
