To enjoy Love Island

minutesturntohours · 31/05/2022 20:30

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

They've actually made an effort to put more well educated people in. Maybe they don't look it, but there's been a fair few in STEM or from very good universities, which I actually think is good that they took on board. but still only the body beautiful. So if you’re intelligent you might get in but if you’re ugly you still won’t.

And let’s be honest, it’s the outer appearance young teens feel pressured into. If you’re not thin or beautiful then you’re not worthy and these programmes just confirm it.

I agree, it's definitely based around looks, but we already know the standard was slim/thick, without Love Island existing.

@minutesturntohours you MUST be fine with suicide though OP as you watch the show? Even watching the adds that's all I think about. Each to their own.

what a load of rubbish!!

No it isn't. There's something grossly emotionally wrong with people who enjoy watching real people argue, shag and suffer on national TV.

Because I work in a very stressful , very challenging and emotionally draining job and like to watch something that isnt more misery.

@araiwa I dont mind being judged over a programme. I mind the implication that I'm okay with suicide. Theres really no need to swear at me.

So because you work in a stressful environment, you think that justifies you watching people be exploited and have their emotions made a mockery of on TV.

loomband · 01/06/2022 10:30

I suppose the same applies to any television or chilled activity? Anyone who likes films?
Basically half the population under 30 are unhappy you say, I'm not sure about this one.

It's just a show people watch, because their friends watch, that's all there is to it

Fictional films and TV shows aren't the same as real people put in real situations. All reality TV is trash.

The film industry is hugely exploitative of vulnerable young actors.

If you watch films you're scum.

loomband · 01/06/2022 15:55

It's entertainment that's all. It's trash but that's probably not the most pressing objection to the programme. I would say it's no different to playing a game for an hour but gaming isn't well liked in here either😂

loomband · 01/06/2022 15:58

Trashiness is personal taste. If Love island was booted off they'd replace with another celeb thing, that's just what people want, otherwise they'd be on National Geographic

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 16:10

Hey @Waxonwaxoff0

It's not much different to being on mumsnet.... we hear all about other, real people shagging, arguing and suffering .... we are an audience in the same way!

Get over yourself

No celebs on Love Island though

Well yeah, but thid is a place people come to anonymously for advice and help. You can make a post and then leave, no one knows who you are, whereas once you're on the TV, that's it. You're recognised, you have a platform, you're open to much more abuse.

No I won't "get over myself." Reality TV is incredibly damaging.

darisdet · 01/06/2022 16:20

Someone suggested I watch it, even though it's admittedly trash, as it's all about the after discussion, apparently.

I don't think I will be watching, though, I'm not really a fan of reality TV.

darisdet · 01/06/2022 16:22

The people I know who recommended it said they know it's trash, that is! They enjoy it.

You really need to get out more.

I need to get out more... from a person sitting at home watching reality TV. 🤔

GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 16:38

Yeah I agree!

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 01/06/2022 16:38

I watched one season, the one with Olivia, Chris and Kem etc. I didn’t mind it but when I’ve tried to watch any more series I just can’t get into it. It gets more contrived and forced each year. It’s about trying to win that Pretty little thing contract and the Instagram brand deals afterwards.

You can also tell the producers are relentlessly peddling backstage to direct where things are going.

I know this happens on all reality tv (and I love watching The Housewives etc) but it seems way more obvious on Love Island.

Fairislefandango · 01/06/2022 16:42

It's mindless dross, and the fact that it's so popular doesn't say a lot for society. As a fully-grown adult you might argue that it's fine to switch your brain off, watch it and enjoy it for what it is, as a guilty pleasure. As a teacher I don't enjoy hearing teenage girls enthusing about shows like this and behaving like over-dramatic reality show divas in their interactions with other people.

However vehemently people reject the accusations that L.I. and its ilk directly cause suicides etc, I don't think there's any doubt at all that these kinds of shows are a shockingly bad example to young people - either by inspiring them to copy what they see, or by making them feel inadequate if they can't.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2022 16:33

An hour in the evening.

I assume you watch no TV?

I just don't like this culture of policing other people. They shouldn't be allowed to be on it and I shouldn't be allowed to watch it.

Surely it's far better that we just educate people (youngsters) about these things? It can actually be incredibly helpful - many of my older school pupils watch it and seeing situations play out in real time, like when Adam gaslighted Rosie a few years ago, can really help.

OP posts:
GirlInACountrySong · 01/06/2022 16:58

So what 'shows' set a good example in your opinion then?

What would you like young people to watch and enjoy?

Yeah, I agreed. Chris and Kem was a great year.

And (although it's the right thing to do, as despite words from PP iTV do care) since everything that happened they no longer do any of the stirring and causing problems.

I’d rather they didn’t watch much TV to be honest
