To enjoy Love Island

I've watched every series, I really enjoy it. It's a great hour each evening.

I know people generally look down on programmes like this but don't actually watch them. I can't be the only one?

But you said you’ve never watched it, so how do you really know any of that?

Your judgement isn’t based on even half the information available. It’s coming from a place of ignorance combined with presumption and unconscious prejudice, perhaps influenced by others with the same opinion whom you consider worthy of respect. If we read the opinion of someone we look up to, respect or consider superior to ourselves we can easily be influenced into voicing that same opinion without actually considering the facts and information for ourselves. It’s a form of unconscious bias. We can all fall victim to it. I find the concept of unconscious bias really interesting.

You don’t think the below is a bit nasty/spiteful?

To be honest though I think people who watch shoes like this aren't happy in their own lives. If you need "mindless" telly to deal with your life I'd be wondering why.

There's something grossly emotionally wrong with people who enjoy watching real people argue, shag and suffer on national TV.

I thought that was a foul post, I couldn't be arsed engaging though. I don't have to explain to a stranger why I enjoy mindless TV - the implication was already there that it distracts from what I do have going on in my life so if they want to be vicious, that's fine.

Genuine question OP, why did you ask if you’re going to get so annoyed that people disagree?

I'm not annoyed at all! I'm allowed to respond, though!

@minutesturntohours not sure what you mean about rail against Caroline Flack’s death?

I didn’t judge you or say you were a bad person but I will stand by not understanding how you can watch a show associated with 3 suicides and enjoy watching it.

You seem happy to watch the program regardless which is your choice.

I'm not sure how the suicides were related to the show. Caroline flacks I know was not, it was very clearly due to the domestic violence case against her.

I don't watch it. The premise sits uncomfortably with me, and my inner-feminist hates that women are judged on how they look.

minutesturntohours · 05/06/2022 13:30

@Oinkypig I was very vocal at the time about the injustice and unfairness of her death and the role of the press.

Well, as Pp have pointed out, they were unrelated. Caroline was hounded by the press, Sophie took drugs following the suicide of a friend, and mike was bankrupt and lost his nan and drugs were also involved. All very sad but not caused by tbe show. Laura Whitmore, the new host who was Caroliens best friend, has said numerous times publicly that the show wasnt to blame and Caroline woildnt have wanted it to be. And I will take her word, and that of Dame whoever who is the head of ITv as i watched the inquest into Jeremy Kyle where she was interviewed and tbe panel were satisfied with the safeguarding in place.

Theres been several series, and each series has a large number of contestants - statistically, with the age of the contestants, the circles they move in, and the access they have to drugs and money, it's far more likely. Doesnt mean tbe show should be cancelled.

Oh good timing of this thread then!

The final two episodes of this excellent podcast series examining reality tv are about Love Island. Fascinating listen about how influencer culture has shaped the show and the darker side of the series, the suicides, aftercare (or lack of) for the contestants and the future for series like this in the ‘be kind’ era of TV.
