WTF has happened to ice cream?

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:02

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

You should have got this. Words do not describe www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/no1-white-chocolate-ice-cream/049303-24564-24565

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:16

That looks normal. They didn’t seem to have any normal. Only stupid flavours and fancy expensive. I’m very sad

This doesn’t help you but I’d love some fancy artisan rhubarb ice cream in a glass jar for silly money right about now.

inappropriateraspberry · 31/05/2022 20:24

Lidl do a nice vanilla Cornish clotted cream one.
Although those Waitrose ones sound better than a cheap soft scoop tub!

WatermelonSugarEye · 31/05/2022 20:28

Make some! It's much easier than the manufacturers would have you believe.
I made a gorgeous elderflower sorbet last night, God knows how much Waitrose would have charged for it as there must be at least 100 scoops.

FlyingPandas · 31/05/2022 20:28

Yup, I'm with you OP.

My DC love bog-standard supermarket chocolate ice cream. Nothing fancy, none of your Haagen Daaz bollocks or super dooper exotic flavour combinations. And definitely no plant based vegan shite. Just, you know, basic, own-brand ice cream. Sainsbury's, Tescos, Morrison's, they're not fussy, they just love a nice, no-frills, basic chocolate ice cream.

Can I find any? NO!

I can see why the supermarkets need to cater to the artisan bollocky vegan brigade, but am very sad that they all seem to have abandoned their nice basics.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 31/05/2022 20:32

Thank goodness for Mackies. Everywhere round here has it as they are local.

It makes my mam happy so I am delighted.

I will never tell anyone about my favourite find. There are days when I need the comfort of it being in the freezer. (It isn’t what you seek though OP so you are fine 😉)

TimeTravelSickness · 31/05/2022 20:47

I quite like some of the ‘plant based vegan shit’ occasionally. 😂

This is the one for me. Like an ice cream margarita

GrouchyKiwi · 31/05/2022 20:51

Mackies is the best ice cream this country has to offer. It's pretty good really.

(I still miss NZ ice cream. Only 7 months till I get to eat some again.)

SabrePrattler · 31/05/2022 20:51

I hate Ben and Jerry's and won't even buy that when it's half price. I still mourn tha Haagen Dazs macadamia brittle ice cream that I can't find anymore.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 31/05/2022 20:52

I feel like this about Big Feasts. At one time they were ubiquitous. Now you hardly ever see them.

Chouetted · 31/05/2022 20:55

I think that might be more of a Waitrose problem. Iceland still sell bog standard Walls vanilla alongside the fancy stuff

FluffMagnet · 31/05/2022 20:57

Could have been worse OP, you could have bought this gritty monstrosity and currently be wallowing in regret and self pity.

Giveitall · 31/05/2022 20:57

Kelly’s Cornish Ice Cream is the proper job. I always look for Dairy and Cream words in the brand/tub name.

But! Ive also discovered Aldi Cornish Dairy Ice Cream & really like it.

When I’m visiting Sidmouth in Devon the place to go for the best ice cream cornet ever is The Fort on the sea front. It’s a cafe with an ice cream counter alongside. Ice cream, home made, to die for!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 31/05/2022 20:59

In the interest of local fairness, Rizza’s double dairy makes me reluctant to share.

Angels melting on my tongue.

May those 7 months pass quickly for you kiwi 🍦

Macadamia Brittle is my favourite ice cream ever! LIDL had some in little tubs a couple of years ago and I scooped a bunch up but otherwise impossible to find.

ursuslemonade · 31/05/2022 21:02

How about Jude's vanilla ice cream? Or they do a choc& cherry kefir ice cream which sounds strange but is really good. Naturally I can't get my hands on it as it's out of stock all the time.

yesthatisdrizzle · 31/05/2022 21:06

I yearn for a proper raspberry ripple, but that is as rare as unicorn eggs.
🙁

LampLighter414 · 31/05/2022 21:08

Get a McFlurry from the drive thru or on Uber eats

blacksax · 31/05/2022 21:09

The manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact that if they put the ice cream in a poncy little round tub, give it a fancy name and throw in some random lumps of caramel / papaya / cocoa beans / broken biscuits / fudge they can charge five times as much.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 31/05/2022 21:10

Spare a thought for the lactose intolerant, who don't want to have to eat the vegan shite but needs must. That always comes in weird flavours because they're hiding the bloody awful taste of the fake ice-cream. Swedish Glace excepted.

cafedesreves · 31/05/2022 21:15

Definitely check the vanilla actually has vanilla in it, incredible how many don't

Tock · 31/05/2022 21:17

Bobbin I understand. I reached for a simple raspberry sundae flavour. But oh no. Full of bastard bits of wheaty sponge cake. Why????? Why do that? Cunts.
