WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

Perhaps don't shop in waitrose if you don't want "fancy" or "expensive"

JudyGemstone · 31/05/2022 21:57

MarvellousMay · 31/05/2022 21:40

YANBU. Why do so many taste sandy now? What’s that all about?

I think its soya. Cadburys chocolate tastes like this to me now, its so grim.

TheRoadToRuin · 31/05/2022 21:58

I've just discovered lidl top of the range chocolate ice cream. It's the best I've tasted, creamy and bits of chocolate in it.
Just look at the list of ingredients tells you it's proper stuff. Fresh cream and chocolate.

(Carte d'or has no cream just skimmed milk powder and palm oil🤮)

Oblomov22 · 31/05/2022 21:59

What about Kelly's Cornish ice-cream?

sundayweatherwatch · 31/05/2022 21:59

Magnums, all the way

motogirl · 31/05/2022 22:02

@Giveitall

No the best ice cream in sidmouth is the gelato shop. I've tried them all (parents like there)

Imissmoominmama · 31/05/2022 22:03

@JaceLancs - or Notriannis if you nip into Blackpool!

Eeebleeb · 31/05/2022 22:04

*plant based vegan shit

Ah bollox to that. There's some great vegan ice cream out there and it's nice not to have to abuse cows to get it.

Eeebleeb · 31/05/2022 22:06

Spare a thought for the lactose intolerant, who don't want to have to eat the vegan shite but needs must. That always comes in weird flavours because they're hiding the bloody awful taste of the fake ice-cream

Nope. It's not fake. It's just not dairy. Thank God. There's way better out there in non-weird flavours 🙄than Swedish Glace too.

ExcaliburBaby · 31/05/2022 22:11

To the PPs mourning the loss of Haagan Daaz Macadamia Nut Brittle you can still get it in one of the mini tub 4 packs they do. I think it’s with little tubs of Vanilla, Pralines & Cream and Cookies & Cream. We always argue over who gets it 😂

HelloMaryJane · 31/05/2022 22:22

Tesco do Neapolitan ice cream.
I had a yen for pistachio ice cream recently and it was very hard to find. When I did find it, it was terrible! Think it was Waitrose but may have been M&S and a sludgy grey colour with matching taste.
Why is Mackies in such big tubs? I can't fit that in my freezer.

HelloMaryJane · 31/05/2022 22:23

Best ice cream I ever had was Luca's in Musselburgh. Divine

skybluee · 31/05/2022 22:24

Thank you for the neopolitan suggestions!

hulahooper2 · 31/05/2022 22:24

I love Mackies , though my favourite is from our local cafe who do all sorts of lovely ‘normal’ flavours.

RosieRoww · 31/05/2022 22:27

Make your own- I do that as well, the quality is significant.

Plasmodesmata · 31/05/2022 22:28

Sandy ice cream might have palm oil in it. Palm oil makes everything taste of grit, with a slight overtone of sick.

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 22:28

I blooming miss Cherry Garcia before Ben and Jerry sold the company. One of the best posh things I ever bought was an icecream maker that actually freezes instead of having to freeze the bowl. I make my own poncely flavours like mango lime and ginger :)

coffeecupsandfairylights · 31/05/2022 22:32

Kelly's clotted cream is always good and Tesco finest ice cream is good too - I get caffe latte normally but DH rates their chocolate one.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 31/05/2022 22:33

I like strawberry ice cream wiht actual strawberries and cream and sugar in it, not all this salted chocolate burnt sugar uncooked gunk stuff. Found a DIVINE one in Wiltshire, Roasted Strawberry by some local farm, am seriously considering selling up and moving down there just so i can eat it every day

Buildingthefuture · 31/05/2022 22:38

I agree with @yesthatisdrizzle What happened to Raspberry Ripple? Can’t get a decent one now! I will sometimes make do with a Solero though!

EwwSprouts · 31/05/2022 22:42

If in Waitrose and want fancy, the Nuii ice cream lollies are pretty good. The mango one is delicious.

Coop west country cream venezuelan chocolate is our favourite tub.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 31/05/2022 22:44

Started reading this thread and had to stop for a trip to my freezer. Sat eating a Magnum double Raspberry ice cream lolly now. Yum! Raspberry icecream, layer of chocolate, layer of raspberry coulis finished with a layer of chocolate. Hits the spot.

Abbaloverandmum · 31/05/2022 22:44

Anyone know where to buy coffee ice-cream? I see Ben & Jerrys now do one but nowhere seems to sell it, maybe in the US only.

LucyLeaseExtension · 31/05/2022 22:45

GrouchyKiwi · 31/05/2022 20:51

Mackies is the best ice cream this country has to offer. It's pretty good really.

(I still miss NZ ice cream. Only 7 months till I get to eat some again.)

How long are you going for?

Have you booked yet? I was looking at flights the other day, but they were ££££

...and I still can't imagine sitting on a plane with a few hundred people for 24 hours (covid. I've done the flights FARRRR too many times)

...but now that you mention NZ ice cream....
