WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

My pet peeve is the manufacturers that package the non-ice cream substitute junk identically to the real ice cream. I don’t want chemical crap, I want real ingredients like cream and sugar.

This is the one for me. Like an ice cream margarita

I was momentarily confused by this, thinking of pizza flavoured ice cream.

Shortbread49 · 31/05/2022 21:20

carte dor especially the chocolate one as it’s not too sweet

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 31/05/2022 21:22

My mum had exactly the same rant a few weeks ago.

Luckily I still live in a more deprived area where we don't get the posh flavours, just Mackies vanilla and maybe some Ben and Jerry's Wink

Shortbread49 · 31/05/2022 21:24

Vienetta can you still get them

Sally090807 · 31/05/2022 21:25

WatermelonSugarEye · 31/05/2022 20:28

Make some! It's much easier than the manufacturers would have you believe.
I made a gorgeous elderflower sorbet last night, God knows how much Waitrose would have charged for it as there must be at least 100 scoops.

That sounds delicious, do you have the recipe 😊

skybluee · 31/05/2022 21:30

my favourite is neopolitan (strawberry, vanilla and chocolate) and it's really hard to get it anywhere now. i agree with you bc the shops i've been into all have tubs of ice cream for £5 in flavours i don't want! i just want normal/plain ice cream how it used to be years ago!

userxx · 31/05/2022 21:37

Yup. It's a quid from my local convenience store. Aldi also do Vienetta rip off lollies, lovely 👍

Our Asda do their own brand Neapolitan. Not the smart price but asda's own.

MarvellousMay · 31/05/2022 21:40

YANBU. Why do so many taste sandy now? What’s that all about?

HideousKinky · 31/05/2022 21:41

Waitrose do a lime & coconut one which is absolutely divine

HideousKinky · 31/05/2022 21:44

Ah I see SabrePrattler upthread has already recommended it

Wazzawoowoo1 · 31/05/2022 21:45

No Carte Dor? None of the two tubs for £3 that look like Carte Dor knock offs? You should've gone to Asda.

FWIW I love Ben and Jerry's half baked and there's a new one that's like half baked but with caramel in it. I will not stand for another word to be said against them. Haagen Daaz salted caramel is also amazing.

Halo Top and low fat ice cream are an absolute abomination.

Morrisons Neapolitan Wafers - thank me later, wafer one end, chocolate covered the other, Neapolitan in the middle. Not remotely artisan but ... well, thank me later 😀

Lemons1571 · 31/05/2022 21:49

Kelly’s dairy vanilla in the old school rectangular tub is really good. £4 though. They also do an old school raspberry ripple.

Tock · 31/05/2022 21:50

No local Asda or Morrisons for proper ice cream. No Uber. No mcflurries and no taxis either. Back of bloody beyond.
I did get a bottle of pimms with a fiver off though. And some reduced spinach.

Vienetta does exist, DH bought one and it’s in our freezer. Dunno where from but likely to be lidl

Kelly’s is stocked in sainsburys if that helps

whimsicalwillow · 31/05/2022 21:52

Aldi's Madagascan Vanilla ice cream is just delicious. Lovely smooth texture and very creamy. £1.99 a tub.

Can’t beat Bonds ice cream from Booths or from their own shop if you live near Elswick

Giveitall · 31/05/2022 20:57

Kelly’s Cornish Ice Cream is the proper job. I always look for Dairy and Cream words in the brand/tub name.

But! Ive also discovered Aldi Cornish Dairy Ice Cream & really like it.

When I’m visiting Sidmouth in Devon the place to go for the best ice cream cornet ever is The Fort on the sea front. It’s a cafe with an ice cream counter alongside. Ice cream, home made, to die for!

Oh I cannot bear Kelly's. I had the misfortune once to have a freezer failure. The fatty mess of yuk left in the Kelly's tub turned my stomach.

IncompleteSenten · 31/05/2022 21:55

I do like lots of the strangely flavoured ones but you can't beat a good clotted cream ice cream with a flake in it.

intwrferingma · 31/05/2022 21:55

Y'all need to hop over to this lovely thread and discover some ice cream amazingness.
Loads of fantastic recommendations..

Aldi Gianni's Cornish vanilla with a dollop of creme fraiche for a cheap thrill. And Hackney Gelato (pistachio, Bakewell tart, you get the idea) for an expensive one.
