WTF has happened to ice cream?

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:02

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

Thank goodness for Mackies. Everywhere round here has it as they are local.
Sorry, but Mackies is overhyped - too sweet and pumped full of air. If you're local to Mackies, try the ice cream from Forest Farm Organic Dairy. Sublime!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 31/05/2022 22:46

Iceland (unsurprisingly) do fucking awesome ice cream. Knock off Soleros, mini Vienettas on a stick, raspberry ripple, the super cheap choc ices, neapolitan in a tub, funny feet... They do some wanky stuff too, but it's just aisle upon aisle of what I want ice cream to be.

gingercat02 · 31/05/2022 22:48

You all need proper Italian ice cream makers where you can just go and get a tub/cone of the best ice cream ever. No help I know but sorry not sorry

ExcaliburBaby · 31/05/2022 22:11

To the PPs mourning the loss of Haagan Daaz Macadamia Nut Brittle you can still get it in one of the mini tub 4 packs they do. I think it’s with little tubs of Vanilla, Pralines & Cream and Cookies & Cream. We always argue over who gets it 😂

Oh great! I am going to look for these next time I'm in the supermarket. Yummmm!

Jas5mum · 31/05/2022 22:48

There's quite a few ice cream parlours around here. You can get 5L at a time if you wanted. Mr. Bs gelato or callestick farm or roskillys.
I'm addicted to ben and jerrys. I have a tub a week when I can afford it 😋
Totally get where you're coming from x

Greensleeves · 31/05/2022 22:49

I make my own. I make different ones for DS1 and DS2, several tubs at a time (I buy Ben and Jerry-sized cardboard tubs on Amazon) and it saves me a fortune.

Current favourites are: Peanut butter and chocolate, Black Forest, chocolate orange with mini jaffa cakes, vanilla fudge and salted caramel, sour cherry, raspberry lemonade sorbet and mint choc chip. Get yourself a decent ice cream maker!

You should make this, it's incredible

oh that sounds deliciously boozy. Definitely going to give it a go.

@JaceLancs - or Notriannis if you nip into Blackpool!

i live in Fylde and have never had Notriannis yet! 🤦‍♀️ But I have never liked Bonds ice cream, it tastes somehow stale like the inside of a fridge can smell and it’s usually icey too.

Abbaloverandmum · 31/05/2022 22:44

Anyone know where to buy coffee ice-cream? I see Ben & Jerrys now do one but nowhere seems to sell it, maybe in the US only.

Morrison's do a delicious café latte ice cream.

ThinWomansBrain · 31/05/2022 22:55

the flavours in Waitrose Levantine table range are amazing
also had a local vegan shop (sadly closed at the weekend, lease issues) that made an amazing miso gelato that was to die for.

This is the one for me. Like an ice cream margarita

Honestly the best ice cream in the world- it got me through my last pregnancy 😂

Ohwowhoho · 31/05/2022 22:57

My low calorie plant based vegan shit is my fave. Double whammy from me 😂

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 22:58

I am amazed to hear about Notrianni's in Blackpool. When I was a kid in London, our local icecream shop was a Notrianni's known locally as Nott's. They also had the local van. For some reason i never fathomed I was allowed to buy icecream from the window of the shop but was never allowed to go in the shop.

LadyLothbrook · 31/05/2022 22:59

I habe an ice cream van and we have just got a licorice flavour whippy in to try (not by choice)...I can't wait to see how it goes down.

I saw something coffee flavoured in asda today
Googling for it just now (ASDA Extra Special Colombian Caffe Latte Ice Cream) also brought up a Waitrose own brand, and something by Judes.
I dislike anything coffee flavoured, but Judes adn waitrose are usually both good.

MagnoliaTaint · 31/05/2022 23:04

Had Co-op's Venezualan Chocolate tonight which was actually just nice standard chocolate icecream.

MagnoliaTaint · 31/05/2022 23:06

Tock · 31/05/2022 21:50

No local Asda or Morrisons for proper ice cream. No Uber. No mcflurries and no taxis either. Back of bloody beyond.
I did get a bottle of pimms with a fiver off though. And some reduced spinach.

Pimms and spinach ice-cream will never catch on.

Greyhare · 31/05/2022 23:07

I think the problem is because they now try to cater for all tastes and needs it decreases the space for the good stuff, which sells out quickly because it's good.

WatermelonSugarEye · 31/05/2022 23:07

Sally090807 · 31/05/2022 21:25

That sounds delicious, do you have the recipe 😊

I just use the BBC good food recipe but I double the quantity and also add a couple of shots of gin, which seems to make it easier to scoop.

Tesco do a Café Latte ice cream from their "Finest" range. It's about £2.50 a tub and it's really good 😊 @Abbaloverandmum

powershowerforanhour · 31/05/2022 23:08

Mullins, Draynes, Tickety Moo, Mauds...

Come to Northern Ireland for proper normal dairy ice cream in normal flavours. The kids and I got massive strawberry Draynes ice creams at Balmoral show this year (with coloured sprinkles because they are young, and it was Balmoral), the sun shone and all was right with the world. Also available in vanilla, chocolate, honeycomb, mint choc chip and raspberry ripple. Proper flavours. Proper job.

ToppTotty · 31/05/2022 23:08

Kelly's Cream of Cornish "clotted cream and vanilla" is still nice.
Kelly's also does strawberry in season and (currently) raspberry ripple @yesthatisdrizzle

I bought Mackie's once (the blue tub) and it tasted of nothing at all!

HideousKinky · 31/05/2022 21:41

Waitrose do a lime & coconut one which is absolutely divine

That sounds like heaven. M&S ice cream is lovely.

TruthHertz · 31/05/2022 23:09

Haagen Daaz cookies n' cream or strawberry cheesecake are pretty good without being too OTT.

Do you know where they get the licorice flavouring from? I can't find anything that works. Treacle ice cream is as nice though.
