WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

I’m guessing those bemoaning “ plant based vegan shit” have never even tried it. I prefer it to ice cream made out of cow puss myself. It’s really creamy and you don’t have to feel guilty about baby boy calf’s being separated from their poor grieving mothers!

The Ethical Dairy who makes Cream o Galloway don’t do that.

Ronaldos in Sheringham, amazing selection of flavours of ice creams and sorbets, lime and tequila sorbet is wonderful though my great favourite is blackcurrant sorbet. There are also some fairly alcoholic ones they don't sell to children.

Yes, amazing. Ginger for me. ❤

Blossomtoes · 02/06/2022 23:05

We broached the Cream Tea ice cream tonight @MagnoliaTaint and I’m delighted to report it’s delicious. Very creamy vanilla with little cakey crumbs and veins of fruity coulis. I might have to buy some more.

MagnoliaTaint · 02/06/2022 23:48

Oooh! I had a double-blind test of the rest of the Caffee Latte, to check. It's still nice. Smile

Not quite sure about crumbs in ice-cream, but I'm willing to try. In the interests of science.

catflycat · 05/06/2022 11:36

You might not believe me but the plant based shit tastes exactly like dairy ice cream (plus being advantageous for cows ✌️). Many of our non vegan friends have found this when eating with us / feeding our kids. The Swedish Glace comes in just a plain vanilla in Waitrose

TechGuy · 05/06/2022 12:49

LIDL do a most excellent vanilla made with real Madagascar vanilla pods. They keep changing the container and name - of late it's Bon Gelati and a yellowish 2.5L tub, as well as a 1L container. But the key thing to watch for is the word "Bourbon", and if you look at the ingredients it will say "ground extracted vanilla pods". These are the tiny black dots you'll see in the slightly yellowish ice cream. It's as good as any upmarket ice cream. For some reason it is outstanding when served with home-made carrot cake. (well my recipe anyway 😁)

skybluee · 05/06/2022 13:24

The Co Op choc ices are not very nice :(. It doesn't taste like real ice cream. At least I only wasted £1.60.
I will try something else next.

The Ethical Dairy who makes Cream o Galloway don’t do that.

Still artificially inseminate their herd and send them off to a slaughterhouse when they can no longer produce enough a Calf or enough milk to make a profit. I'll stick with my oat paste.

MagnoliaTaint · 05/06/2022 15:12

co op choc ices are indeed crap.

Double decker icecream (dd's choice): mad, but good. Full of unexpected crunchy/chewy bits.

mbosnz · 05/06/2022 16:57

@GrouchyKiwi do you have an ice cream maker?

GrouchyKiwi · 05/06/2022 16:59

@GrouchyKiwi do you have an ice cream maker?

No, but I'm thinking of getting one soon. (We're moving to a house with an actual pantry; very exciting.)

Ifeelsuchafool · 05/06/2022 21:59

I just don't buy supermarket ice-cream if I can help it. In London, I'd go for Udderlicious, at home in Yorkshire, Ryeburns of Helmsley, or Groovy Moo in Malton.

mustlovegin · 06/06/2022 01:15

The food doesn't need anyone to get angry in its defence. Are people getting angry because someone saying they think X food tastes shit is interpreted somehow a personal attack on the person who enjoys eating it? Because it's really not

At last someone is making some sense

Yep the and Aldi big vanilla tubs for the win aswell .they recently changed the tub design didn't they and my mum went full on panic that it might have changed!
Reduced fat.or sundae types or vegan have taken over the market and many just aren't as good, its not how ice cream should be made sorry.
And don't get mecstarted and low can like halo tip and the folk lieing there asses off saying it's good/the same.bullshit dearest your stuck in diet culture hell just eat proper ice cream and feel satisfied.

kateandme · 06/06/2022 01:39

Mini milks, nobblies, feast and magnums seems to be being there own though.
An an arctic roll is a nostalgia hit.

Natsku · 06/06/2022 14:45

Tried making that frozen banana "nice cream" today. Was surprisingly good, made it with some frozen berries and a splash of milk.

Ponderingwindow · 07/06/2022 03:49

My opinion of fake ice cream was formed by accidentally buying some and eating it without realizing my mistake. It was so vile I didn’t make it past the first bite.

if I want a cold treat without dairy, I will have sorbet made from fruit and sugar.

londonrach · 07/06/2022 06:58

Yanbu. Ice cream is sicky and rubbish now. I remember good old raspberry Ribble as a child..... perfect

Ferngreen · 07/06/2022 07:04

I was talking to a local ice cream seller (from a van) here in Scotland. Italian family originally and when I complimented her on the ice cream she said it was their traditional recipe ...... Cream , Sugar and that's it no, no vanilla or anything.
Lovely

Weirdwonders · 07/06/2022 07:25

Agree OP! I don’t know if it’s already been said but I don’t know what’s happened to yogurt either. It’s all either extreme low fat, or ‘luxury’ i.e. high fat with chunks of fudge, chocolate or jam or something equally disgusting in it. A nice yogurt in a standard flavour? Nope.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/05/2022 20:51

Mackies is the best ice cream this country has to offer. It's pretty good really.

(I still miss NZ ice cream. Only 7 months till I get to eat some again.)

I totally agree. We absolutely love Mackies ice cream.

Mirw · 13/06/2022 01:33

Plenty vanilla ice cream in Morrisons and Aldi a d Lidl. Change where you shop. And stop using the c word, it just makes you look ignorant and uneducated.
