WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

@Cloudburst3 No but I can find out in the morning and come back to you.

ToppTotty · 31/05/2022 23:12

I need help Ice Cream Lovers! I have been looking for many years for a chocolate and cherry ice cream that I had around 20 years ago from a supermarket in Swindon. If anyone knows what this is/was please tell me! It was heaven in a tub. It was chocolate ice cream with a cherry swirl, btw, not cherry ice cream and definitely not Cherry Garcia!

knowinglesseveryday · 31/05/2022 23:13

All I want from ice cream is vanilla only, no non milk fat or emulsifiers or palm oil, not too much sugar, and no long list of extra dodgy sounding ingredients. That, it seems, is way too much to ask of any supplier.

mrsfollowill · 31/05/2022 23:13

Judes 'Flat White' coffee ice cream is gorgeous. Served on top of little bitesized chocolate brownies warmed for a few seconds in the microwave. With a little bit of cream blobbed on top. So I've heard anyway. I prefer a 'massive' fruit salad Grin
Although all the sugar in the fruit is probably bad for me. Oh well!

Cleanbedlinen12 · 31/05/2022 23:14

tock oh this did make me laugh! especially the final word 😂😂😂😂😂

Bobbin I understand. I reached for a simple raspberry sundae flavour. But oh no. Full of bastard bits of wheaty sponge cake. Why????? Why do that? Cunts.

whynotwhatknot · 31/05/2022 23:16

i agree op i just went to my freezer and had some carte dor vanilla

sometimes you just want some old school plain ice cream

earsup · 31/05/2022 23:16

my poundland has all the posh ice creams inc swedish glace etc and .. i got 3 litres of pistachio for £2 the other day....movenpick....fab.

Vikinga · 31/05/2022 23:18

Love the plant based vegan ice creams. My kids love it too (even the one who is anti vegan). And I'm also happy that no animals were tortured and that it is much less harmful to the environment.

And generally, ice cream is pretty poor in this country imo. Any big standard ice cream shop in the continent is full of super tasty ice cream compared to here. But I do like pistachio, BlackBerry, proper strawberries, lemon sorbet etc

TortolaParadise · 31/05/2022 23:18

Go to Iceland! Untold brands and flavours to be found.

Getoff · 31/05/2022 23:18

Waitrose do a Cornish clotted cream which is very nice. . There's also a honeycomb crunch, which is even nicer.

You clearly don't live in NI, we always have good sensible ice cream choices like Dale Farm and if you are very lucky, Ulster Maid. Morellis or Mullins if you are feeling fancy.

I quite fancy trying the Ben and Jerry's Sundaes, does anyone know if they're nice? I haven't see any in the shops.

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 23:22

alcohol does that. It lowers the freezing point of the water content of the icecream. If you put in too much alcohol you will end up with the most delicious very cold drink or milkshake

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 31/05/2022 22:46

Iceland (unsurprisingly) do fucking awesome ice cream. Knock off Soleros, mini Vienettas on a stick, raspberry ripple, the super cheap choc ices, neapolitan in a tub, funny feet... They do some wanky stuff too, but it's just aisle upon aisle of what I want ice cream to be.

They have that ambrosia ice cream too, custardy ice cream! It's great with (crimble) crumble

ancientgran · 31/05/2022 23:27

I live in a buckets and spades seaside town and not hard to find icecream but the price is terrible. A single scoop cone is £3.50 so a family with mum, dad and a couple of kids that's £14! I give the kids a scoop of Kelly's Cornish with a flake in a cone before we go to the beach now, six GC so an icecream for them, DH and me comes to £28 and more if anyone wants a flake (like me for example.)

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 23:28

Anybody rememeber Baskin Robbins shops?

Cherryblossoms85 · 31/05/2022 23:35

@yesthatisdrizzle aaah raspberry ripple! People think I'm posh until I ask for that flavour 😂

JudgeJ · 31/05/2022 23:36

Ronaldos in Sheringham, amazing selection of flavours of ice creams and sorbets, lime and tequila sorbet is wonderful though my great favourite is blackcurrant sorbet. There are also some fairly alcoholic ones they don't sell to children.

Doggyfish · 31/05/2022 23:25

I recall, not with great pleasure, runner bean ice cream in China.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/05/2022 23:42

Can anyone recommend an i/c maker, then?

Tesco have Wicked Kitchen which is OK for the lactose intolerant & comes in choc cookie dough & mint choc chip flavours. Magnums also come in vegan versions now.

CO-OP once did a blood orange & something sorbet which was gorgeous. And a local restaurant made a dark chocolate sorbet which was divine.

MadeleineMaxwell · 31/05/2022 23:43

Well, now I want some Mackies!

However, if you're in an ice cream bind, you could always try nice cream - you freeze banana slices, then blitz them with a dash of milk/cream/yoghurt/whatever and flavourings of your choice. Surprisingly good for plant-based vegan shit :D

StrawberrySquash · 31/05/2022 23:44

I haven't forgiven Waitrose for stopping their chocolate truffle ice cream. It was properly dark with little blocks of truffle in it. There's not enough dark chocolate ice cream around.

Blackmagicqueen · 31/05/2022 23:44

Co-op irresistable West Country cream Venezuelan chocolate icecream is out of this world! It is the nicest icecream ive tasted in any supermarket and way better than any haagan daz. I'm sure the rest of the flavours in the range are too. It is cheaper than ben and Jerry's and a million times better (Ben and Jerry's isn't even in the same league).

StrawberrySquash · 31/05/2022 23:47

@Abbaloverandmum Waitrose do a coffee ice cream.

Branster · 31/05/2022 23:49

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 22:28

I blooming miss Cherry Garcia before Ben and Jerry sold the company. One of the best posh things I ever bought was an icecream maker that actually freezes instead of having to freeze the bowl. I make my own poncely flavours like mango lime and ginger :)

The only icrecrem I really like! Gone forever but I think you can get small tubs with pizza takeaway orders sometimes or maybe in some restaurants .
And then I found a mint lolly ice-cream covered in chocolate (Tide?) available from supermarkets and of course that's gone too.
I do like the mini Vienettas on a stick from Aldi though
