WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

Well, now I want some Mackies!

However, if you're in an ice cream bind, you could always try nice cream - you freeze banana slices, then blitz them with a dash of milk/cream/yoghurt/whatever and flavourings of your choice. Surprisingly good for plant-based vegan shit :D

I did that tonight with banana, full fat yogurt and a few raspberries.

Kelly’s dairy vanilla in the old school rectangular tub is really good. £4 though. They also do an old school raspberry ripple.

I bought Kelly's raspberry ripple at the weekend, it was divine.

Ladybird69 · 01/06/2022 00:05

@yesthatisdrizzle marks do gorgeous raspberry ripple.. it always flies off the shelves though. I’d like a bog standard strawberry! Nothing added to sensualise it.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 01/06/2022 00:08

I like the low calorie ones, can satisfy a craving without doing too much diet damage, they still taste pretty good.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 01/06/2022 00:13

In the U.S years ago (nineties) I got addicted to Breyers Mint Choc Chip, shame they don't do it here. It was utterly amazing.

tulips27 · 01/06/2022 00:19

I would like a plain pistachio ice cream and a plain coconut ice cream to be available, not mixed with lime as in Waitrose. Plain coconut is popular, when Lidl had it in in coconuts everyone was posting about it and it sold out so I'm sure it would be a hit.

@knowinglesseveryday I like Haagen Dazs vanilla for a good vanilla ice cream, simple ingredients and nothing nasty added.

plominoagain · 01/06/2022 00:27

I make most of mine without an ice cream maker . Favourites here are banana , strawberry , and plum . I just mash about 600g of fruit into a purée and sieve out any seeds there may be , then separately whisk 280g of caster sugar , and 600 ml of double cream together till it thickens up . Add the purée , gently stir the two together then bung it in an ice cream tub and stick it in the freezer . I take it out a couple of times to rewhisk it so it doesn’t set completely solidly and there you have it . Sometimes I add a little more sugar if the fruit is particularly tart , but really , that’s it .

Phrenologistsfinger · 01/06/2022 00:48

Oi, I love my vegan ice cream- you can keep all your frozen cow mucus to yourself!

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/06/2022 00:51

Lemons1571 · 31/05/2022 21:50

Vienetta does exist, DH bought one and it’s in our freezer. Dunno where from but likely to be lidl

I like this too. Basic flavours but nice. Sold everywhere, I think. Tesco and Ocado sell it.

MissConductUS · 01/06/2022 00:52

Ben & Jerry's is still my go to brand, Cherry Garcia in particular.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 01/06/2022 01:03

@Doggyfish Oh god, YES! I love the ambrosia custard ice cream. It is my own personal sorrow that my freezer can only hold two tubs at a time.

Tromboleese · 01/06/2022 01:09

yesthatisdrizzle · 31/05/2022 21:06

I yearn for a proper raspberry ripple, but that is as rare as unicorn eggs.
🙁

Me too. Raspberry ripple was my favourite. There used to be a place in Manchester that made it and it was so good.

Florenz · 01/06/2022 01:15

Most supermarkets still do normal vanilla ice cream. I don't know about Waitrose, do they have a basics range?

Somethingneedstochange · 01/06/2022 01:22

I miss Bruciannis I was looking for some to add to my online order. Nowhere sells it anymore. Only one Bruciannis left in Morecambe.🙄😔We don't have it often I would rather get some when were out on a hot day. There's all sorts of weird and wonderful creations.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/06/2022 01:36

I don't know what the hell has happened to Mackies, but it tastes shite now. Really sickly. Haven't found a decent neopolitan or raspberry ripple in years.

Many years ago Asda did a custard ice cream and that was gorgeous. The coconut/lime one being recommended on here sounds lovely but we don't have a Waitrose anywhere near.
The best one I've found recently was a magnum one where you crack the chocolate on top. It was amazing and 2 of us finished the whole tub in about 15 minutes.

EmotionalBruises · 01/06/2022 08:00

Not another vegan ice cream bashing thread. Have you even tried the 'plant based vegan shit'? Most of them are comparable to dairy ice cream and no one has to abuse a cow for it.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:02

FlyingPandas · 31/05/2022 20:28

Yup, I'm with you OP.

My DC love bog-standard supermarket chocolate ice cream. Nothing fancy, none of your Haagen Daaz bollocks or super dooper exotic flavour combinations. And definitely no plant based vegan shite. Just, you know, basic, own-brand ice cream. Sainsbury's, Tescos, Morrison's, they're not fussy, they just love a nice, no-frills, basic chocolate ice cream.

Can I find any? NO!

I can see why the supermarkets need to cater to the artisan bollocky vegan brigade, but am very sad that they all seem to have abandoned their nice basics.

@FlyingPandas It is actually possible to post about what you like without being an arse about vegans Hmm

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:03

@EmotionalBruises Agreed. So tired of the constant anti vegan threads.

Belledan1 · 01/06/2022 08:05

I was after basic neopolitan or raspberry ripple the other day and couldn't find in two shops.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 01/06/2022 08:07

A tub of the so eloquently put “£8 Gelato shite”, is a million times nicer than the air filled junk you seek. Plus it lasts me much, much longer as you only need a small bit of it. Cheap ice cream is just grim and I am not keen on paying for air!

Brefugee · 01/06/2022 08:08

meh - have you tried the "Vegan shit"? most brands are pretty good.

Make your own?

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:09

BobbinThreadbare123 · 31/05/2022 21:10

Spare a thought for the lactose intolerant, who don't want to have to eat the vegan shite but needs must. That always comes in weird flavours because they're hiding the bloody awful taste of the fake ice-cream. Swedish Glace excepted.

@BobbinThreadbare123 No one is forcing you to eat ice cream. Just don't have any if torture free is such a terrible hardship.

Or have sorbet.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:10

Ponderingwindow · 31/05/2022 21:19

My pet peeve is the manufacturers that package the non-ice cream substitute junk identically to the real ice cream. I don’t want chemical crap, I want real ingredients like cream and sugar.

@Ponderingwindow Everything is chemicals. You are chemicals.

EmotionalBruises · 01/06/2022 08:11

@Innocenta I knew OP would mention vegans in there somewhere. So fed up with seeing these anti-vegan threads pop up time and time again.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 01/06/2022 08:11

Plus, why all the love for Mackies, bleugh. Sweet, air filled. Moderate.
