I hate dummies !!!

I have a real hatred for toddlers with dummies! It actually irks me so much.

I totally get there is a time and place for dummies to soothe and settle babies.

My own son had a dummy as a newborn but I took it off him/he gave it up at around 6 months.

I could not bear for him to be one of these children you see with a dummy you cannot part them from.

My friends children his age still have dummies and every photograph you see of them they have this unsightly thing plugged in their mouths.

Even when we are out, they are given the dummy for no reason. Not upset, not settling to sleep just automatically put in the mouth.

I never used to have such a thing about dummies until I became a mum and I don't know why they annoy me so much 😂 !!

I know it's stupid because they aren't my children however does it bother anyone else as much ?

Not on the slightest.

Dd had one til she was 5.

Later diagnosed as autistic.

beattieedny · 11/04/2022 17:09

No. Mine did not have them, but I see no harm, especially if used for sleep or confort.

RegardingMary · 11/04/2022 17:09

Doesn't bother me at all.

Judgemental mothers on the other hand...

AchillesPoirot · 11/04/2022 17:10

Posted too soon.

You have no mention of disabilities or sensory seeking behaviour in your rant.

It would be nice if you weren’t so ableist but I suppose that’s not something you’ve ever had to deal with so it’s not on your radar.

If you could think a little more broadly you might see that for some children it is necessary.

AHungryCaterpillar · 11/04/2022 17:10

I didn’t give any of mine dummies, so many say they are essential but mine managed without. Most people I know who gave dummies had a real problem removing them and the kids were 3+ by the time they finally gave them up

Sunflowerx · 11/04/2022 17:10

I think getting annoyed at the sight of a dummy in a child's mouth, that isn't your own child, is a bit mad.

If you don't like them, don't give one to your child and leave it at that.

JustWonderingIfYou · 11/04/2022 17:10

I fully agree with you. They look awful! Same with bottles after babyhood.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 11/04/2022 17:10

Nope.

AHungryCaterpillar · 11/04/2022 17:11

All the kids I know who had them late don’t have sen.

AchillesPoirot · 11/04/2022 17:11

@JustWonderingIfYou

I fully agree with you. They look awful! Same with bottles after babyhood.
Dd had one of those til she was 5 too.

You wouldn’t know to look at her she was disabled.

beattieedny · 11/04/2022 17:12

@RegardingMary

Doesn't bother me at all.

Judgemental mothers on the other hand...

Yes! Would we were all without fault. Honestly, the worst thing about having small kids is the judgey other parents.
AchillesPoirot · 11/04/2022 17:12

@AHungryCaterpillar

All the kids I know who had them late don’t have sen.
Dd doesn’t have SEN.
MatildaTheCat · 11/04/2022 17:12

To be fair being a judgemental pearl clutcher isn’t a great look either.

Mine both had dummies at appropriate times to them and have grown into fine young men with no complexes or crooked teeth.

Stones and glass houses..

ldontWanna · 11/04/2022 17:12

Because you have issues and you put too much focus on optics, how things look and what other people think.

You have arbitrary and subjective rules that you either internalised or came up with yourself, and anyone that doesn't follow them, falls short in your eyes.

I bet it's not just dummies either.

You asked.Grin

Mummy1608 · 11/04/2022 17:12

Yabvu and classic judgy parent. My dd doesn't use a dummy because she just never took to them. Your kids are probably the same so you don't know what it's like if they really need it for comfort.

I still BF but I really understand that many mums can't or won't BF a toddler. If DD falls over and cries, I whip out the BF. It makes a lot of sense to me to give a dummy if you can't offer a BF in that situation.

Also, I think dummies are cleaner than when kids have a dirty old "blankie" to chew instead. But even that I don't judge, it's just luck if your kid takes to a dummy instead of chewing a rag, you do what you have to do.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 11/04/2022 17:14

I'm the mother you hate. My boy is two. He had a dummy in today when I needed to do the food shop.

What you saw was a toddler with a dummy.

What you didn't see is a toddler with an ear infection feeling rubbish having a bit of comfort.

What you didn't see was a mother who had been up all night just trying to survive the food shop without a meltdown that would give more judgemental looks.

What you didn't see was that my boy rarely has it unless asleep or not well.

What you didn't see is the way you made me feel like a shitty mum for your judgemental attitude.

Not your child not your business

AHungryCaterpillar · 11/04/2022 17:14

Just pointing out for the ones saying “maybe they have sen” well I know for a fact they don’t as they are families kids. My brother had one till he was about 6 😐 no sen.

CoalCraft · 11/04/2022 17:14

DD never used them but each to their own. So what if you find it "unsightly"?

ParkheadParadise · 11/04/2022 17:14

I loved dummies.
Especially when my dd's learned to put them back in their mouths by themselves.

mycatisannoying · 11/04/2022 17:15

I didn't use dummies with my three, and I do agree with you.

AchillesPoirot · 11/04/2022 17:15

SEN isn’t SN.

AchillesPoirot · 11/04/2022 17:16

By which I mean there are kids with SN who don’t have SEN.

Giraffesandbottoms · 11/04/2022 17:17

Bleurgh you aren’t alone they are pretty awful, but as PPs said there are some children with SEN who need them. Or premature babies. But these are in the minority. But then you had one until 6 months for your babies and I think that’s not very nice either so 😃🤷🏻‍♀️ I particularly hate watching a newborn rooting for its mother’s breast and having a piece of plastic shoved in despite trying to push it out.

But this is MN where no one breastfeeds and everyone uses a dummy so it’s a terrible opinion to have. I only know a couple of people IRL who don’t use dummies. But I think they look awful.

HardbackWriter · 11/04/2022 17:17

I never used to have such a thing about dummies until I became a mum and I don't know why they annoy me so much 😂 !!

I know, I know! It's because you're fundamentally insecure as a human being so find petty things that make you feel that you're better than others so that you can momentarily feel less inadequate! Hope that helps!

(no, neither of my children had dummies as toddlers before you ask)

beattieedny · 11/04/2022 17:18

I mean, who even notices these things?! Mind your own.
