Too shy to wear sunglasses? Anyone else?

I always wanted to wear sunglasses, but also feel like I look stupid in them. Every year I see all kinds of people wearing them, and I just think to myself gosh I wish I could do that. My face is round , and I just feel I’d look stupid in them. Im honestly thinking of buying a good pair this year, and just go for it. Does anyone else feel like this about sunglasses?

OP posts:
GeneLovesJezebel · 19/03/2022 10:48

No. I wear then every day.

DoorLion · 19/03/2022 10:51

I would have thought the opposite - sunglasses hide you away so they’d great for any people!
I wear mine at the slightest hint of any sunshine, partly because I have weak eyes and partly because I fondly believe they make me look more glamorous, although that might be because when I have them on I cants see myself properly. I tend to put them on the top of my head and forget about them - they are there right now.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/03/2022 10:51

No. I just shove them on my face and off I go. I wear glasses though so am used to it.

DoorLion · 19/03/2022 10:52

Shy people not any people!

inheritancetrack · 19/03/2022 10:53

I think you need to find a pair that suit your face shape. Bit bonkers tbh not to wear sunglasses in the sun.

FourEyesGood · 19/03/2022 10:54

I used to have the same reservations about sunglasses, OP. Then I needed them for driving and I couldn’t believe the difference they made on a sunny day! Honestly, no-one at all is looking at you in your sunglasses and thinking anything negative at all about you (they’re deep in their own self-obsessed world, just like we all are).

CaptaNoctem · 19/03/2022 10:56

Quite the opposite. I hide behind mine.

It's just finding the right shape for your face. Take a friend with you who will be honest to choose a pair.

Sunglasses are a big help in preventing future eye health problems

RampantIvy · 19/03/2022 10:57

Seriously! No-one will care or notice if you are wearing sunglasses. And from an eye health perspective you should wear them in bright sunlight. It reduces the risk of cataracts in later life.

I have very photosensitive eyes, and wear glasses anyway. I wear prescription strength sunglasses in bright weather.

MulticatHouse · 19/03/2022 10:57

I wear my sunglasses more than I wear my normal specs. Even on a cloudy day.
Wear them!

GlamorousHeifer · 19/03/2022 10:58

I get it, I used to feel like only 'cool' people could pull them off! Which is completely ridiculous when I must have walked past literally hundreds of people wearing them and they can't all have been super cool types Hmm
Once I got over myself and copped on that they are just glasses that stop the sun going in my eyes I've worn them ever since!

WentBumpInTheNight · 19/03/2022 10:58

I hide behind mine too, in fact sunglasses and a mask or ordinary glasses and a mask with a hat feels like a disguise. Very handy when I pop into the town I work in for bits of shopping looking dreadful.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/03/2022 11:02

I used to feel like that, OP. But I needed them for driving so I went to boots and tried on 100 pairs, and several really suit me. Now I wear them a lot.

Just try on loads until you find a good pair, then wear them when you aren't expecting to see anyone you know until they feel comfortable. Soon you will forget you are even wearing them.

CPL593H · 19/03/2022 11:03

Go for it! Honestly, absolutely no one will think you look stupid. I'd take a trusted friend with you and try loads on. TK Maxx often have good brands, obviously at a fraction of the usual price, might be a place to have a look.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/03/2022 11:03

OP, consider your health then - sunglasses are helping to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. They also stop the headaches you get from squinting in the sun. I have a round face so I just choose sunnies that are a similar shape to my regular specs.

Bladdiebladdieblah · 19/03/2022 11:05

I wear mine all the time. Like others have said, I need them for driving.

I do think you need to spend a decent amount to get a good pair. I bought cheap ones from the Adult section of tescos the other day and they are too small for my 6YO son. Never mind me.

Tohaveandtohold · 19/03/2022 11:06

You need to find one that suits your face.
I used to feel like this at some point. I still wore them but I always feel like it does not suit my round face until I found a pair at Shein some years ago. They were perfect. Just try different shapes till you find the one that fits.

tiredanddangerous · 19/03/2022 11:06

I'm shy and I love mine because I can hide behind them! Go to a shop and try lots on until you find some you're happy with.

CounsellorTroi · 19/03/2022 11:08

I wear glasses with reactive lenses. They can be a nuisance though when you walk out of bright sunshine into a darker bar and have to wait ten minutes before you can read the menu. I’m not as shortsighted as I was (astigmatism the main problem) and am thinking of treating myself to a nice pair of sunglasses to wear out and about in the summer and keep my proper glasses for reading and indoors.

HRTQueen · 19/03/2022 11:09

It’s being overly self conscious thinking what others are thinking about you. It’s awful I look back and wonder why I talked myself out of so many things

But people are not as interested in you as you are or talking behind your back like you others will only give a fleeting thought to how others are dressed/what they say/look like

I would have to remind myself do I look at others and judge them as harshly as myself (and no I didn’t)

Positive for being peri menopausal is I just don’t care anymore Grin

Thebedistoohot · 19/03/2022 11:10

Nobody gives two hoots - get a good pair, try polaroids, they are amazing & enjoy not having to squint.

Sunshineandrainbow · 19/03/2022 11:11

Go for it. Go to boots and take you time to try them on and treat yourself.

gogohm · 19/03/2022 11:12

I wear them to protect my ears and for safety in the car, nothing to do with shyness. Get yourself some basic sunglasses, nothing too fancy or fashionable and they will save your corneas from damage

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2022 11:12

Nope, never felt like that about sunglasses

jeaux90 · 19/03/2022 11:12

I wear them all the time. I have very light sensitive eyes.

Go for it!

Thirkettle · 19/03/2022 11:14

Life is far too short to make up odd things to worry about. Sunglasses are as necessary as suncream, unless you fancy cancer of the eyelids. Put some on and stop thinking anyone is even going to notice. Literally no one is looking at you.
