Too shy to wear sunglasses? Anyone else?

sunglassesthissummer · 19/03/2022 10:47

I always wanted to wear sunglasses, but also feel like I look stupid in them. Every year I see all kinds of people wearing them, and I just think to myself gosh I wish I could do that. My face is round , and I just feel I’d look stupid in them. Im honestly thinking of buying a good pair this year, and just go for it. Does anyone else feel like this about sunglasses?

OP posts:
Niahm · 20/03/2022 20:19

I feel you🤣
I’m also the same with hats. I think it’s just because you’re not used to them, so such a drastic change looks silly in our mind?

C0mm0nsense · 20/03/2022 20:21

Do you know, this is exactly how I feel. I had some on yesterday for about 5 minutes as it was really sunny but felt I looked so stupid that I took them off and then squinted they rest of the time.
Always feel others look normal in them or really good and then think I just look ridiculous in them.

DuesToTheDirt · 20/03/2022 20:25

I don't mean this to sound rude, but honestly, no one is looking at you! No one except you cares what you look like in your sunglasses.

Gardeningdream · 20/03/2022 20:26

Gosh this is The height of normality, it’s like saying do you feel self concious to wear shoes. Maybe you need to spend time focusing on improving self esteem and confidence because wearing sun glasses is no different to wearing shoes or a watch. It’s really just a necessity.

TheHaka · 20/03/2022 20:45

I think most people look stupid in them, especially in the rain 😆 What’s even more stupid is people saying that they need them for driving.

Blossomtoes · 20/03/2022 20:50

You never drive when the sun’s out?

RampantIvy · 20/03/2022 20:54

I think people who say that most people look stupid in sunglasses ought to educate themselves about the risks of not protecting their eyes from UV rays.

You really need to give your head a wobble @C0mm0nsense and live up to your user name. Loads of posters have pointed out the increased risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and UV damage, and all you can think about is "looking stupid". Not wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight is stupid.

Thehappygardener · 20/03/2022 21:02

I understand how you feel although I now wear sunglasses, with or without a prescription lenses, a lot. Once you start wearing them, you will love them, I’m sure. AND they stop you squinting AND they protect your eyes from too much sun light AND are good re preventing or slowing down some serious eye sight problems. Win win! Just go for it 😎

NannaKaren · 20/03/2022 21:05

Go for it - you only live once - have you a good friend or family member that can say whether a particular style suits you more?! Or just please yourself - I’m sure you will rock them ! Xxx

HMBB · 20/03/2022 21:13

I totally get it OP. I still feel like people are looking at me when I wear sunglasses. It's almost as if i think that they think I am trying to be 'cool'.

I know in reality though nobody gives a damn whether I wear them or not but I do still feel self-conscious!

Weewillywinkle · 20/03/2022 21:33

Never heard of this before! In fact after wearing them I feel exposed taking them off.

I love my prescription ones. Couldn't wear sunglasses for years as I'm very short sighted and didn't have prescription ones. They are worth their weight in gold to me as sunlight triggers migraines for me and I hate squinting in the brightness.

Go and try some on - take a friend you trust and try loads of styles - eben ones you think wouldn't suit you.

I suspect that’s not a driver who posted that.
Amici · 20/03/2022 21:43

Me! 🖐️ I get it. I love the two pairs I have but feel like I'm basically walking about in theatre props in them 🤣 I have a small heart shaped face so have some cateye shaped sunnies, I adore them but feel like Dame Edna in public with them on 🙈 and my others again just feel so 'look at me!' but as pp said, no one cares as much about us as much as we do about ourselves. I wear mine in the car and I plan to slowly wean myself into wearing them more this summer. I plan on wearing them while with others who have theirs on, so I can adjust to them while 'hiding' among friends then build up my confidence from there. Google what styles suit you then either order a bunch from Very or somewhere with free returns or go out and try some on, you got this 💪

Greatexpectations77 · 20/03/2022 21:57

I wear them in my house sometimes, which sounds very weird, but I live abroad, it’s very bright sunshine and my eyes feel sensitive to it

Pinkfluff76 · 20/03/2022 21:59

On the contrary. I wear mine virtually every day. In winter i find the white glare terrible and actually feel self conscious as generally I’m the only one. But for summer love wearing them, try some on. I’m sure you’ll find some that suit you.

Gonnagetgoing · 20/03/2022 22:01

I get that they might draw attention to you but go to a department store or Boots and spend a while finding the right fit for your face shape.

YourWinter · 20/03/2022 22:37

Sunglasses are absolutely brilliant for hiding behind when you're shy, as I am. I love wearing a face covering for the same reason, quite apart from the attempt to mitigate the risk of transmission of airborne viruses, and I will continue to wear one in public for as long as I possibly can.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/03/2022 22:53

I've read threads on MN where people say it's ridiculous to wear sunglasses when it's not warm. As though the glare from the winter sun isn't a thing. As for the galaxy brain upthread laughing at drivers wearing sunglasses... Confused

OP, try a Wayfarer shape, that's generally flattering. And then just get used to wearing them. Especially if you're blue eyed, as blue eyes are more sensitive to sunlight.

milcal · 20/03/2022 23:01

I know what you mean as for years I didn't wear them unless in very bright sunlight.

Now I don't really care what I look like and mostly wear a pair for driving and sometimes out and about. To be honest it really helps with eye strain and stops me from frowning.

If I wear you I would go into Primark and buy several pairs that are different shapes and colours - they are only £1. Then try wearing them when out and see what shape suits you before buying more expensive brands.

Good luck 💐

Hmm1234 · 20/03/2022 23:19

No need to be shy people have them on even when the suns hardly out Wink square clear frames seem to suit rounder faces.

grannyjacob · 21/03/2022 03:15

I’m like a lot of posters, I wear mine at even a hint of sunshine and have done for years. They help keep my eyes healthy, and though I’m in my late 60s, I am virtually wrinkle free around my eyes.
I wear specs, so mine have prescription lenses and are very similar to classic Wayfarer Ray-bans, like the Blues Brothers wore.I’ve often been told I really suit them, but oddly I’ve tried specs in the same shape/colour and I really don’t suit them, so it’s obviously the very dark lens that make the difference on me.

Mol1628 · 21/03/2022 05:47

I always keep a pair in the car for driving! Used more in winter when the sun is low!

Mummadeze · 21/03/2022 07:19

I am the same as you. I have tried on loads and not one pair suited me. I am too vain to wear them and would feel silly / unattractive. I have never worn a pair in my life and am 48. Didn’t know it was bad for me though, I thought they were mostly a fashion accessory!

RampantIvy · 21/03/2022 08:05

Vanity over eye health? I know which I would choose. As many posters have already pointed out, no-one looks at anyone wearing sunglasses on a sunny day and thinks they look silly, but they might if they see someone squinting in bright sunlight for the want of wearing some.

home-eyecare.co.uk/2019/06/the-benefits-of-wearing-your-sunglasses/

It is obvious from this thread that there needs to be more education about eye health.

Do all the posters who won't wear sunglasses for "aesthetic reasons" not need to wear glasses at all? How on earth will you cope when you need them to correct your eyesight?

Happygirl79 · 21/03/2022 08:11

Wear them to prevent wrinkles coming early around your eyes if not for your eyesight!
